pre-release info New Civ Game Guide: Persia

pre-release info
How about the possibility of the Leader Unique Unit? We have already seen it before from Civ6.
I don't think they'd fit with Civ7's model since leaders (and their bonuses) last the whole game.

"Access to LUU at the Nth Age" can works I guess? The civ-independent leader is more fit to the concept of LUU than the Civ6 leaders.

But it’s either going to give them an extra boost that other leaders don’t have, or if it’s balanced for, it’ll make that leader weaker in other ages.
I think we will get more Age-optimized leaders finally, but I'll not bet when it will happen...

I coudld see a flat bonus to all Cavalry(and Armor for modern) units though.
In this case, maybe they will decide to give him to unique "unit skin" instead of UU itself. Did I go to far?

It’s a winged jester lion.
 Actually, it has the horns of a ram. It was based on these depictions from the palace of Darius I at Susa.

Meh! Of all the antiquity civs, this one has sparked the least interest for me to play. I hope military gameplay is less tedious than in previous editions, so I might change my mind.

Noticing it's just called "Persia."

if this post gets 50,000 likes, Firaxis has to change the name to Achaemenid Persia to make room for Sassanid and Safavaid Persia later on.
Instead, they have a civic called Achaemenid Empire.

Disappointing, too, because it's so pretty. :(

It seems there are always several good options for leaders in each age even with 10 Civs. I really like the different compinations we already have in the first age. For example Trưng Trắc makes good combo with several Civs: Mayrya/Maya/Persia/Rome. I dont know if she makes that good combo with Khmer though - there is starting bias for Tropical, but that is pretty much all there is.

Persia's new icon. I like it way more than the previous ones, and I'm glad it was changed in order to spice things up. On the other hand, Greece and Rome had to have the same lame icons for the third time in a row.

I personally didn't mind the falcon. I think someone at Firaxis is a fan of lions because now we have four different civs, at least, with lions as their icons: Persia, Normans, Chola, and Mughals. I mean they are just bigger cats. :mischief:
One could argue the Shahbaz could have made more sense if Persia is only going to be relegated to Antiquity, but oh well. I guess if Zoroastrianism is coming back they didn't want a religious icon to look like a civ icon.

Xerxes has an Achaemenid persona too.

Kinda doubt how Alexander would fair in Italy considering Pyrrhus' records - who was a decent general himself, and his troop composition or how he used those troops was not different from Alexander's.
A military historian, though, pointed out that with Alexander guarding its flanks, the Macedonian phalanx on level ground was unstoppable except by another pike phalanx, a contention borne out by experience against the Swiss pikes in the 15th - 16th centuries and the experience of a Roman who commented that seeing the mass of pikes coming out of the dust clouds in one of the battles against the Macedonians was the most frightening thing he saw in 20 years in the Legions.

Conquering Rome would never have been easy, but unlike Hannibal Alexander was an expert at Siege warfare and never failed to take a walled city that he wanted: Rome's walls would have been a historical speed bump and the man who in his stride figured out how to deal with massed horse archers (Sogdiana) and Elephants (Hydaspes) would not have been long disconcerted by massed swordsmen (Legions).

Also, don't forget that Alexander didn't just have the assets of Epirus, but of the entire eastern half of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East behind him: he was planning a fleet of 200 Septiremes ('7s') just for the jaunt around Arabia, The mind boggles at what kind of force he could bring to bear against Italy.

Nothing stops them from doing "Sassanid Persia" and "Safavid Persia" down the line you know, same history with "Ptolomaic Egypt" and "Ayyubid Egypt" either, even "Masryeen Egypt" in Modern (I know that's kinda pleonasm)

Humans are fans of lions. So, so, so many groups used lions (and eagles) as their symbols. I guess something about apex predators is appealing to megalomaniacs? :mischief:

Look... I just...

Wow, so Persia is ALL about aggressive warfare.

Infantry are:
  • cheaper to produce
  • cheaper to maintain
  • bonus strength when attacking
  • more bonus strength in enemy territory
  • heal on kill
  • get the commander initiative bonus for quicker deployment
  • generate gold when capturing

And that's all BEFORE you add leader bonuses. Xerxes can give you even more combat strength when in enemy territory and more gold and culture for conquest.

And just imagine Trung Trac's 3 additional promotions on the Persian unique commander.

Also, I believe Persia gets a second + Settlement Limit that other civs don't have.
