pre-release info New First Look: Lafayette

pre-release info
The kingdom of France is going to be included in Rise to Rule isn't it.

Called it!!!!
Though my hopes for Lafayette were renewed with the announcement of Civ VII, I was asking for him to lead France back on the Firaxis forums way back when Civ V was first announced!
He definitely pairs very well with France's abilities!
I'm definitely leaning towards playing as him and Greek->Normans->France in my first game on Feb. 6th

Firaxis, I wholeheartedly disagree with all the anti-American and Europhobic comments on this thread.
We need more Western Leaders, especially those associated with America (even if not themselves American)
Let's definitely get Pulaski down the line and synergize him with the Polish civ if one comes to Civ VII

Pulaski would be cool. Especially if they coded his capital to be renamed Chicago if he leads America.

I think it would pair nicely with Louis XIV and Chlodwig, which are also in that pack.
Why stop there. Add the Merovingians as an Antiquity Civ and Haiti (which we all know is a FRENCH COLONY) and Quebec to Modern.

France won the Civ6 Culture victory.

I know he's being pitched as a French leader...but this feels like "American Leader Who Is Not A President No. 3." Would honestly have preferred Casimir Pulaski in that role. :coffee: Mechanically, I like him, though. I am very amused that the French theme sounds like a mash-up of "La Marseillaise" and a French indie film score.
It would be pretty hard to do Casimir Pulaski if historians keep going back and forth whether or not he was a woman, intersex or whatever (I don't care one way or the other as he is a pretty cool character, but Im sure in this political/culture war clime, probably not the best idea). Also I think at this point its evident someone on the Firaxis team really liked the show "Franklin" on Apple TV with Michael Douglass...

For a milisecond I thought it was Toussaint Louverture (Haitian revolution) but was immediately dissapointed.

Little rant is following, be warned!
Why is there another leader for France as we already have Napoleon?
And if they wan't to add another one, they pick the one that is connected to the US for some reason, while there are loads of international well known French leaders, heros or interesting persons.
Also please guys, don't use European leader because except for the French speaking world and probably the American public, the rest of Europe's people don't have any connection with him or are known with him at all.
I realy don't get why people keep using European or Asian leader as if that would make all European or Asian people happier with them.
I'm happy for leaders from different civilizations a bit spread around the world, but a French leader in Europe is just as foreign to me as an Incan one in South America or a Chinese leader in China is.
I'm not suddenly happier if France gets a 3th leader instead of America or Japan for instance, just because France is in Europe. One leader per civ is enough, if the civ is in game or not doesn't matter in that.
I would rather have an Mexican, Bugandanese, Songhai, Aksumite, Thai, Khmer, Hawaian or even a Normandian one instead of this guy.

It seems that having a person in your civs history that has connections with the US is a plus too so if the Netherlands gets a leader it will probably be Peter Stuyvesant even if he only lead a small insignificant colony (at the time New Amsterdam/York was just that) and he was an biggot, but it was in what now is the modern US. Maybe I'm being a bit too sceptical now, but with the release of more of the leaders I'm starting to get more and more.
I realy don't like the leader based game idea. Civilization is and will always be about civs for me, and it's fun to have a national hero/leader of them for you to look at during gameplay but that is way less important than the civ itself.
And if you gonna make it about leaders you should especially use the big names from historical civs around the world, they don't have to be known to everyone, but just a well known leader in thats civs history.

As cool an addition Lafayette is it feels a bit similar to the issue Civ 6 had where there were way too many Hellenic leaders (Gorgo, Pericles, Basil the Bulgar Slayer, Theodora, Cleopatra and Alexander the Great).

But it would also be nice to have some more African leaders as now there are as many French (or associated with France) leaders as there are African leaders (Ibn Battuta, Hatshepsut and Amina.

Mechanisms wise, are the Social Policy slots permanent (at least until the end of the age), or are they just temporary??

Social policy slots get reset when you go to the next age.

I'll have it recorded that I have no problems with France having three leaders in Civ7.

I do have issues with France having three leaders in the base game. (Charlie is more of a .5 because he represents all of western Europe). You'd THINK Firaxis learned from the extreme hellenization in the Civ6 base game (which: lmfao that we went from three Greek leaders to NONE at all), but old habits die hard. Utterly wild.

GET NAPOLEON OUT.
