New SG - Monarch, Standard Settings, Continents, Large Map

Dazedroyalty welcome to the SG Club with the classic mistake we all make which is forgetting the save!!

Don't worry I don't think I have been involved in an SG when it hasn't happened at least once!!

Ralph

i don't think i have played a SG where I haven't forgotten once!

Sorry about the save. I'm a little embarrassed to have missed that on my first SG turnset ever. ON the other hand, the reason I forgot is because I got a call that my good friend was going into labor and they needed some help with their oldest daughter. So that makes me feel a little better about forgetting... I will have it up soon, but probably not until late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

p.s. baby was born fine. it was a boy.

Also, how do I put the images into a report without it being so small?

Well you need to wrap IMG tags around the Http link to your picture

like this

'{IMG}link[/url] to your image file {/IMG}' but using [ &] not { &}. If you clikc on the icon that looks like a photo of a mountain it puts in the IMG tags and you can then cut'post in the link or there will be line under your imagheshack 'picture' that has this sort of code in and you can just cut and paste it into your report

Congrats to friends for the new arrival

Ok all, I'm not quite done with my set of turns yet, but I got to a point where I want to check in with you all before finishing my last couple turns.

First Let me catch everyone up on where we are at:

1) Rome Grew to size 3 - Set to work the Bronze Mine

2) Our scout warrior finished healing and headed West

3) We got AH and found no horses in any area we know.
Research set to Writing.

4) Work boat completes at Rome, and production set to Warrior to act as a second scout.

5) Workboat arrives at Clam next to Antium and improves the tile. City starts working the Clams. Our scout finds the edge of Hannibal's land.

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

6) Scout moves a bit closer to Hannibal's land (Pic shown above)

7) Warrior Completes in Rome, production set to Axeman for defense.
New Warrior set to explore the tundra to south.

8) Atrium grows and starts working the new farm.
Rome will grow soon, so Worker sent to Improve the Cows.

Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

9) Pericles' Scout shows up and starts scouting our territory (see above)
Next to Antium, Worker finishes the farm on the corn.

10) Warrior explorying to south is attacked by wolves and stops to heal up.

11-13) Nothing major happens.

14) Antium Grows to Size 3.
Rome completes the Axeman, thinking that we need to expand again soon, and seeing that we are ready for a whip, production set to Settler.

16) Antium completes the Warrior who Fortifies in town, Not seeing anything else worth building yet, production set to Axe.

17) This is where we are at.
Writing will complete this turn.
Also I plan on Whipping the Settler this turn in Rome which will cost us 2 pop, but will complete this turn and I think give us 30+ hammer overflow for next turn.

But my quesiton is threefold.
1) What do we produce in Rome next? I'm thinking Axeman as two warriors and an Axeman feels weak for defence of 3 cities.
2) What do we research next. I was thinking Massonry for the walls and Stone, but we could also do Sailing for the Lighthouse/Galley or Pottry for cottages/Graineries.
3) Where do we put our third city?

Attached below is the "Known World"
South part: (Note the horses in the tundra by our warrior)

and North part (Note there is some overlap with the last screen shot)

I figured this was a major enough discussion point that I would bring it up to the group so we can decide what we want to do next before I finish my turn.

Any thoughts?

Thoughts..

Next city site

Two options IMHO with what we can see at the moment
a) Claim pigs with a city 1 or 2 W on the river which can be a good production site.
b) A stone city later which with a border pop can work 2 deer, Horse and Stone if 2 w of stone but will need a monument to do "anything"

So I would go for Pigs site

Research...

Lots of options.... lets get the team to debate the pros and cons..
Mysticism to unlock monuments.
Pottery- Granaries (primarily for increasing growth rate and whip efficiency) but I wouldn't prioritise cottages
Iron Working.. for Praets
Alphabet for tech trading purposes but with only Hannibal and Pericles about wont be that many trades available.
Sailing for LH
Masonry for Stone

Personally (but as its the weekend a good chance for everyone to chip in views.
Option A
Settler to 1w of Pig and work pigs + 2 hills as pump out a couple of units
Antium - Library whipped in (maybe a forest chop) and then should run 2 scientists (it will be our GP farm)
Rome - pump out a couple units then a worker. Will need to mine a forested hill (putting the chop into?)

Research. Pottery - Myst - Iron Working (or Alphabet if we meet AI's)
+ let's do some more exploring

Option B

With a large continents map a Great Lighthouse trade route economy could be different and interesting (it is an underrated wonder by some).

This would involve going Sailing, Masonry and Lighthouse - Great Lighthouse (at least partially chopped) in the capital.

Option C

Views welcome..

So can I suggest

Scrubkai posts the save having played a slightly abbreviated but good turn set. :goodjob:

People download it and have a look to discuss options as we could say the very 1st phase of the game is completing and we are now planning phase 2.

Good suggestion, things are much easier to see in the game.
I was actually having a bit of a hard time deciding what shots to post so people got a good idea of what's going on.

Here is the save for everyone to look at.

My thoughts on the situation...

I like the idea of settling west by the pigs. We are going to want to capitalize soon on our praets, and that means early war. Hemming Hannibal in partially and getting a solid production city that close to his borders makes him the likely target (unless Pericles builds some insane wonder that we can grab). If we can isolate Hannibal from horses and deny him his UU, we can probably do some serious damage. The site to the north with the corn, floodplains and plains marble is gorgeous, but unfortunately its way too far away for us (esp. w/o financial). Also, all those non-forested plains hills look ripe for iron to come in.

I have to speak out against Ralph's GL idea. For one, we're probably going to be warring early on - which means less trade routes. Also, looking at the map there arn't very many good city sites on the water that we can see right now, and given we have two other civs on our map we're probably going to be going for early techs that are condusive to war - CoL, construction, feud., engineering, etc... and not beelining to optics to find other civs (And really take advantage of the GL). But, just my opinion.

We could make the run for pyramids with the forests around Rome...

I think either way we have get IW very soon. Without Iron we can't build praets IIRC, and that will determine how we progress. That being said, I like the idea of settling 1W of the pigs. With three forested grasslands right there, we can put up three farms with the pigs and eventually work 4 plains mines for a very nice unit factory right on hannibal's eastern border. A backfill on the game/game/horses/stone would then be possible if we don't need to claim iron with our next settler and that would let us get mysticism later and save the research - pigs, a farm, a plains hill and a grassland hill would be workable without popping the borders, which would be fine on our happiness cap.

I don't think we need more than one axeman for defense right now. I think we should switch Antium to food production (corn + clams) and build a worker to road out to our new city site.

So, my thoughts: settle 1W of the pig, get IW, build a worker in Anium, and stat to develop the new city as a production city. I think whoever said the stone is a red herring is right.

(I think its either Masonry or IW - Masonry if we want to make a run at the pyramids, IW otherwise). I vote IW because we do not have great terrain visible for peaceful expansion - Antium has some nice food potential, but we'll need mysticism and a monument. Without more cities the happiness effects of representation are blunted and until CoL the specialist bonus isn't useful (also, we don't have tons of food at our potential city sites, also blunting pyramids).

Since we seem to be talking about longer term plans.

My thoughts go as follows:
1) Cities:
We should settle 1 West of the pigs asap. Then we can add a city later to cover the deer/horses/stone area..
2) Research
With our low happiness limit (4 or 5) we have to be very careful balancing our growth with whipping unhappiness. Right now Granaries will probably grow us too fast to give us time to control unhappiness as we whip down. So I would Prioritize Pot down a bit. But I do think expanding our borders could be very useful.
So I would think Myst>Iron
3) Production
Rome: Axe>Worker as I still feel we need a bit more protection (and growth time), before producing a Worker to work on the new city.
Antium: Library via whipping, then add a couple scientists while slowly finishing the axe.
4) Wonders:
I could see shooting for the Pyramids in Rome, but not the GL. With as large a continent as this looks to be, I don't see us getting the payback we want from this. But either one would require Masonry to be our next research item.
5) Exploring.
My thinking was, we would use the south warrior to scout Han's land to the west as best he could, while the guy to the north searches for Peri's land to the north. He is most likely right on the cost as we could have a trade route with him per the lower left score window.

i actually prefer 2W of the pigs: it doesn't get the two mountains but get a couple more hills instead. however we would have to chop a monument to get it going.

Well we seem to have consensus on Settling a pig city but need to decide between
1. Speed - 1 W of the Pigs letting us do IW straight away
2. Optimal city site - 2W of Pigs which measn going Myst - Monument in new city chopped as soon as available (may have to put a turn or so of hammers into a Warrior / Barracks whilst waiting.)

For Antium & Rome 2 proposals out there

1. Antium Worker then Library
2. Antium Library first (Whipped)+ scientists.

So lets quickly see if we can agree

A1. Myst then IW or IW straight away this deciding if
A2. Settle 2w of pigs if Myst first or 1 w of pigs if IW first
B. Antium switch to library and whip a.s.a.p or worker first
C. Rome to build??

FWIW My vote would be
a) Myst -> IW
b) 2w of Pigs
c) Antium to whip library then build Monument then WB while growing assigning 2 scientists when possible
d) Rome finish worker (use axe to garrison new city) then player decides based on what he "sees"

Ralph

Agree witht he Myst>Iron after that pot or sail.

Agree with settleing 2W of pig. Use Axe to protect new city and hopefully start building monument right away so we can get the culture pop.

Antium,Whip library, then build workboat. I don't see a reason to build a monument here as culture from library will expand area by the time the work boat is done.

Rome, Whip settler, we will end up with 30+ hammers, that we can put in the next build and only size 2 but a turn or two from growing to 3if we work both foods, so put the overflow into worker, maybe swap to Axe (or library) till growth, then swap back to worker to finish.

Beyond that, I think we need to see where the iron is and what the explorers see.

oh and do you all just want me to finish up the set of turns and post the save, or does the turn pass to tycoonist?

i can't take it for ~a day, so if you want to finish it off that's cool, and i will try and play on monday or tuesday.

Excellent :smoke: detection there gawd knows why I typed monument whne I meant WB!!

Suggest you finish up the turns as Tycoonist cant play straight away and feel free to squeeze in a couple of extar if you feel like it!!

Ok, I finished up my turns.

Not too much major that went on.

Turn 17 (part 2):Rome Whipped the Settler to finish this turn.

Turn 18: We recieved Writing, Research set to Mysticism.
Rome Started to produce a Worker.
Antium Production set to Library.
Settler and Axeman set out to Pig Site.

Turn 19: Nothing much.

Turn 20: Noticed that mysticism will complete one turn after 3rd city is founded. So reset Rome's worked tiles to work the clam instead of the fish. This will complete Myst the turn the settler arives at the chosen spot, and allow our third city to start producing the monument immediatly. What this does do is slow down the worker production by one turn, but I take that as a fair trade off.

So that's it.

Tycoonist, you are up.
