New Units: 4 Spiders (September 24, 2004)

I had thought I'd try a swarm of little spiders... (maybe even a mine type unit... The larger spider drops off the mini egg sacks... An enemy runs into it and tons of little spiders pour out... could maybe be used for a spell effect or something.) I've been trying to work out some of the Anti-Aliasing issues first. Why buy the bee model? These spiders were easy enough to make (a little tedious boning all 8 legs) but a bee shouldn't be hard at all. Plus I enjoy the model making more than the animating :D

I don't think I'll put a rider on any of them but I can post the spider model and all the textures and maybe the run animation so some others with poser could add a rider.

I was thinking of making some War Slugs actually... (and War Snails naturally being their upgrade), but I'll probably only do fantasy units once I'm satisfied with the epic game... which will be a LONG time from now.

Btw, tiny spider swarms? Thanks... Rest assured that I'll never sleep again..... but that's an extremely cool idea nonetheless :D

Lovely little critters, cuddly and loveable for sure. Make me wanna... tapdance on their evil little bodies. Arachnophobic, ARACHNOPHOBIC!!!

Great work (as usual, especially fond of your pandas :)), but it seems to be something wrong with the Spider_wolf.zip file. It goes Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive on my bottom... :(

Great work Kinboat!!! ;) The three spiders I was able to download and use look great. BUT... In trying to look at the Wolf Spider, WinZip tells me that it doesn't appear to be a valid "zip" file. Am I the only person that had this problem?

The spiders look so cool!!!
Maybe you could do a spider that transforms into spiderman...

I had this problem with WinRAR, but if you have Windows XP you can open it with the built in unzipper (right click the file -> Open With... -> Compressed (zipped) Folders). I don't know how to get it open for any other OS though... sorry.

Instead of the spider laying eggs, It could spin a web, and you enemies could get trapped in it. Or something like that.

Well I think the easiest way to do it would be to have the eggs just sort of pop up out of the ground... That way the same animation could be used for a cruise missile type spell effect or a paradrop mine. Then the 'explosion' death would be the eggs breaking open and swarming over the land. Or an even better idea for a paradrop unit would be little spiders riding the wind on threads of silk, landing and either spinning little webs or burrowing until the attack.

I'm not sure why that particular zip woud be giving you problems... I zipped it up at the same time as the other three. But if you've downloaded it several times and it still won't work I could try zipping it up again, or posting the unzipped FLCs... possibly.

Wow these are nice nice units! Unlike most of the people here, I'm not afraid of spiders. Sword, I feel for ya. I'm stuck living on a Navy ship, so I can't keep any pets either. Otherwise I'd be tempted to get a tarantula as well. :( I did have some pet wolf spiders when I was in HS, but they have rather short lifespans. :( Kinboat, I'd definitely like to play around with the models for some spider riders (Run for your lives men!! It's the Royal Alexandrian Spider Knights!!! :D )

As for the enslavement thing, I'm going to incorporate all the spiders into the FF mod (coincidentaly, I was thinking of how to do a "Giant Spiders" minor civ resource that will be required for these units), with the Lynx spider being the basic, and upgrading to the Wolf spider in the middle ages, the black widow in the industrial age, and the spitting spider in the modern age (the spitting spider would also require materia to build).

Anyways, here's my take on the whole enslavement thing: I'd have the spiders enslave the defeated units into an egg sack. the egg sack will be handled like the treasure units in the Age of Discovery conquest, except that you don't get any points or gold for them. Basically it would be an immobile flag type unit (but not the designated flag unit, the princess will be that), that once the spider creates it, the spider could then sieze it (or some other unit could for that matter) and carry it back to town where it can be "hatched" (upgraded) as the best spider type available. I could come up with some quick animations of a spider egg sack (pobably will have it being burned up or squished for the death animation) and post them here when I get them done. That is, if anybody actually likes this Idea. Alternatively, rather than making it a flag unit, I could make it an immobile foot unit, and give the spiders a 1 unit transport capacity for foot units only and have them (or an airship, which also can transport foot units over land) carry it back to the city for "incubation" (upgrading).

Can't speak for the other dude/dudette but I've downloaded the file six times and haven't been able to open it with Winzip or Winrar. The other files are just fine.
