To me, having to hit control growth is an immediate indicator that unhappiness has been made too high. I don't mind it in temporary scenarios such as a big war where you are getting war weariness ot a lot of pillaging, or you just pulled off a rapid expansion so you need to control growth while you get your luxs up, get some development, that kind of thing. That's reasonable to me.

If you are having to hit the avoid growth as a form of regular course... that's an instant problem to me.

This patch? That's totally the case. Playing Poland on King, Tradition->Artistry, 4 cities and I check almost every turn my happiness to not drop below 50%. I use avoid growth regularly. It wasn't the case last version or little before that.

Only an anecdote since I don't have any logs, but I played another game (2.7.3) the other day when it came out on warlord with progress/fealty/rationalism as Inca. Had Churches/Mosques as faith building, and had all lux I could import. One of my cities was at I'd say 17 population and was showing 10 unhappiness, when I went to lock growth it jumped up to 12 unhappiness. After unchecking, I decided to select "Food" focus. And it went down to 8 unhappiness. When investigating the other cities I noticed the main culprit was production and boredom distress. I consider myself a casual player and it is possible I do not understand a lot of the intricacies of happiness (before or after this patch) but I just wanted to contribute my experience as well. Whenever I see unhappiness spike I tend to research the tech that unlocks the buildings that provide the specific unhappiness reduction.
 
Previous patches the only time i avoid growth on chieftian is when im wide expanding ie standard map i have more that 7-8 cities depending on lux 2.7.x im finding unhappiness with just 3 cities early game and its unstable just growth can throw off the happiness, also science victory is 420+ turns away usually previous patches im bombing into around 350-370 and Culture can be won as early as 250-300 turns it is off, i dont know perhaps endgame science has to be adjusted by 0.75/0.8 of what it was, i think theres a thread on here detailing sources of tourism, and the AI can be hit and miss sometimes the unit spam its noticable other time retreats.

I have removed almost all mods that I usually use. The following
mods active.

(1a) Communtiy Patch - German(v10)
(2) Vox Popoli
(4a) Promotion Icons for VP
(4b) UI - Prommotion Tree for VP
City Limits (v7)
Greatest Cities(v11)
Ingame Editor+(v42)
Raze Capitals and City States (v1)
Realy Advanced Setuo(v15)

Game is installed fresh and clean, cache cleaned several times in between. Please help me. Text was translated with google because I'm German.

Played my first game on 2-7-2, as Egypt (emperor-pangea-epic-normal size-low sea, raging barbs, no venice, no songhai, my usual setting).
Techwise I did well, (duh burial tomb op), I got hammered for being weak then got hammered for being strong.
Not sure how peaceful play is on this version.
France managed to get eliminated mainly by joint effort from America and Persia, its been a while since I saw an AI get erased like that.
Agression was a bit higher especially AI vs AI.
CIty state control feels a bit wonky, most of the game one player had a clear dominance of most CS.
AI works a lot to cause havocs with spies, had several "city rebel" thingies that spawned barbs including one in capital, got a bit better with constabularies.
Happiness was rough, I had one or two barb uprisings because below 35% and most of the game I barely scraped by.
 
Playing on Emperor/occasionally Immortal I think I've had to actively avoid growth in every 2.7 game I've started. Taking Equality stops it from being a serious problem but I still have to slow down throughout. Then again I might just be making bad decisions, I've been having a horrible time with Tradition lately despite it being good (semi-Tall Progress is fine).

1. Remove everything but (1) -> (4b). Are you still getting crashes? Then, add mods one a time to see what's causing the crash.

I've already tried that tonight without mods only 2.7.3, also crashes. Saves reloaded same time crash again.
 
Don't reload old save game (with mods you just disabled), not all mods are save compatible and will crash the save file if disabled. Play a new quick game to check if it still crashes instead.
 
In regards to the changes to Happiness mechanic in 2.7+, I for one am very pleased to have the mechanic functioning as it is. Prior iterations it was such a non-issue that I could ignore the mechanic almost completely yet now it is something to be mindful of.

I still don't use the avoid growth checkbox, though I do play on marathon speed so perhaps I am allowed a bit more headroom in timing to implement plans of adaptation of strategies for future growth, expansion, etc.

Yeah, I should be clear that I wasn't complaining above. It's just quite different to how it was before. I think my play is being pushed more towards what Happiness Policies/Beliefs can benefit me right now instead of going for the greedy moves. If I'm stuck playing catch-up it doesn't seem to work out very well.

If I have to guess you mean the crash always happens randomly around turns 250-350 ? If it's the case more likely it's because of memory than mod conflict. Not sure what can be done with that, maybe turn down the graphic and "show yields" display ?

I'm not exactly sure which version was crash-free anymore. Hasn't had any crashes since 2.7.0
 
Anybody else not getting +1 science from councils and herbalists after picking Ceremony policy from Tradition? It says in the policy description that it does, but then in the city and the tech tree it's not there. I will start a new game to check if it's not there or if it's just a missing text.

I can confirm it's only the text missing for the council, but apparently the herbalist does not give +1 science once built in a city after picking Ceremony policy from Tradition.
