[RD] News Thread of the Americas

Our beloved president J.G. Milei went to Washington, spent a few days in the company of Elon Musk, and now proclaims that Musk is not a Nazi (risible). Then he went to Davos and ranted against the woke agenda and how pedophiles are behind it and -as I feared since before he took office- is veering towards a complete polarity with the equally demented Kirchner group. The Kirchners posit that runaway inflation and insecurity are somehow necessary for gay rights (?), while Milei's stance is that we need to undo this whole gay woke rights agenda in order to secure economic stability and fight the gangs. Oh, also… peace made us weak?

Stop the world, I wanna get off.

So which is worse having your President:

(a) travel and talk nonsense

or

(b) stay at home and talk nonsense.

I'd recommend golf.

Hmmmm. Well.

Presidents here generally don't stay put. The previous one spent his time off knocking his wife concubine around while the current one has drunk the MuskAde and is just mouthing off incoherently.

Thank you.

I'd prefer our own UK PM Sir Keir Starmer to stay at home and talk nonsense.

That is rather than having him go abroad and agree to do stupid things, like sign unequal treaties that cost us dear.

You can always sign unequal treaties at home.

He's going to place a tidal lock on the planet?

Well. Since Donald Trump announced he was pulling the U.S. of A. out of the World Health Organisation then President Milei of Argentina, inconsulta pars, has decided to do the same.

From the link above:

By November [2024], Milei’s shock therapy looked to be yielding some of its intended results. The tax amnesty campaign initiated by the government saw around $20 billion held by Argentines outside the national banking system flow back into the country. As capital returned, market indicators improved and the government in turn was able to maintain the crawling peg at around 2 percent. Inflation dropped below 3 percent in October and kept on falling. Despite coming at the expense of plummeting real wages and a severe recession, many Argentines, exhausted from years of high inflation, have celebrated. A gallup poll conducted at the end of last year shows that economic optimism is rising, with 53 percent saying that their standard of living is improving—the first time the percentage has inched above the majority line since 2015.

Holy Moly, Bolsonaro may have attempted murder.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil’s prosecutor-general on Tuesday formally charged former President Jair Bolsonaro with attempting a coup to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat, in a plot that included a plan to poison his successor and current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and kill a Supreme Court judge.

Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet alleges that Bolsonaro and 33 others participated in a plan to remain in power. The alleged plot, he wrote, included a plan to poison Lula and shoot dead Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a foe of the former president.

So Lula and the Musk incident judge.

Bolsonaro’s son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who is a senator, said on the social platform X that the indictment was “empty” and there was no evidence of wrongdoing. He accused the Prosecutor-General’s Office of serving “the nefarious interests of Lula.”

*Edit*
Milei is also facing a scandal after a meme coin blew up

reportedly involved with Trump , using the same computer experts and whatnot . Total losses of investors said go be 282 million dollars , his profits maybe 90 , maybe 100 millions . (Trump's coin apparently stole 2 billion dollars) And the Argentinian did that with a tweet which he later deleted and like in two hours or whatever . Shame used to be something good , ı don't know , sometime in the past .

It appears the Canadians have decided upon their next Prime Minister

I suspect that any sensational announcements about Canadian retaliation to
the Trumpy tariffs will be merely a distraction from the iceberg he is planning.

Gotta be careful about those carnies.

The milk bottles are glued together, you can’t knock them over!

Wait, the milk there comes in bags. Mine comes in a carton.

edit: ope this is RD. Okay, here’s my qualifying statement: I wonder how the Liberals will do going into the election after Trudeau’s popularity dropped, bouncing only after the tariff talks.

Panama declares emergency over banana region unrest

Panama has declared an emergency in its main banana-producing region, after shops were looted and buildings vandalised in ongoing protests over a pension reform.

The government says constitutional rights will be suspended for the next five days in the north-western Bocas del Toro province.

The measure restricts freedom of movement and allows the police to make arrests without a warrant.

Troubles in the region began a month ago, when the local banana workers union joined a nationwide protest against proposed pension cuts and declared a strike. The subsidiary of U.S.-based banana company Chiquita Brands laid off about 5,000 workers in response to the strike.

Missing Colombian social leaders 'killed by rebels', prosecutor says

The bodies of eight Colombian religious and social leaders who had been reported missing in April have been found in a shallow grave in Guaviare province, in south-central Colombia.

The prosecutor's office blamed members of a rebel group called Frente Armando Ríos for their killing.

Officials said the eight - two women and six men - had been summoned by the rebels to be interrogated about the alleged formation of a rival armed group in the area.

There has been no response from Frente Armando Ríos to the accusations.

Colombia is the deadliest country in the world for rights defenders and social leaders, according to a report by international rights organisation Front Line Defenders.
The bodies were found in a rural area known as Calamar, where members of the Frente Armando Ríos are active.

The group is an off-shoot of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc).

The Farc signed a peace deal with the Colombian government in 2016 and many of its members laid down their arms, but parts of the group refused to disarm and set up dissident rebel groups such as the Frente Armando Ríos.

These offshoots engage in the production and trafficking of cocaine as well as extortion and illegal mining.

They also engage in armed confrontations with the security forces and with members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) - a rival guerrilla group.

According to the statement released by the prosecutor's office, leaders of the Frente Armando Ríos feared that the ELN was setting up a local cell in the area.

They reportedly summoned two of the victims for an "interrogation" on 4 April, and the remaining six people three days later.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a human rights organisation specialising in freedom of religion, said all but one were active leaders and members from two Protestant denominations: the Evangelical Alliance of Colombia Denomination (DEAC) and the Foursquare Gospel Church (ICCG). The eighth was the uncle of two of the other victims.

Among them is a married couple - Isaíd Gómez and Maribel Silva - who often preached in their Protestant church.

Also among those whose bodies have been found is Maryuri Hernández, who helped the evangelical pastor in the area. She is survived by her five-year-old daughter.

According to CSW, all eight had settled in the area after fleeing violence and violations of freedom of religion in Arauca, a province bordering Venezuela where several armed groups are active.

Religious leaders and social leaders are often targeted by armed groups in Colombia which do not tolerate any other authority than their own.

Relatives of the victims said the eight had received a message by the Frente Armando Ríos, which demanded that they present themselves for questioning.

According to the investigation by the prosecutor's office, days later they were taken to an abandoned property, where they were killed.

Officials suspect the order to kill them was given by the inner circle of Iván Mordisco, one of the most powerful commanders of the dissident rebel factions.

The murder of the eight has been condemned by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who called it "heinous" and denounced it as "a grave attack on the right to life, religious freedom and spiritual and community work".

Mark Carny is pushing a cruel and dangerous immigration and surveillance bill

The newly elected Mark Carney government tabled a border bill that will give law enforcement sweeping powers in obtaining citizen’s data, and will align Canada with the US’s refugee policies. Bill C-2, or the Strong Borders Act, is presented as a border security bill. However, its reach extends beyond border applications to nearly all legislation.

The legislation changes the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to grant the minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship extensive powers to cancel immigration documents, and to suspend or cancel intake in any immigration stream if a high number of applications are pending.

This isn’t streamlining the immigration system; this is mass deportation by administrative means, rather than law enforcement.

The other frightening half of the legislation upends privacy laws through enhanced powers for law enforcement. It will amend Canada’s Criminal Code to include greater access to data and other electronic information from citizens.

The Strong Borders Act will make it easier for police to access subscriber information and metadata, and puts the onus on electronic service providers to modify their systems for authorities to access.

In other words, the police can collect subscriber information without a warrant in “exigent circumstances” – wording that makes wider allowance for those circumstances without defining them. This extends to an offence that, as the bill states, “has been or will be committed under this act or any other act of parliament”, which amounts to any legislation passed by parliament.

We are witnessing the construction of a surveillance state in which Canada Post will be able to intercept and open mail.

El Salvador scraps term limits, paving way for Bukele to rule indefinitely

El Salvador's congress has approved constitutional reforms to abolish presidential term limits, allowing President Nayib Bukele to run an unlimited number of times.

The reform, reviewed under an expedited procedure, will also extend term times to from five to six years, while the next election will be brought forward to 2027.

Mr Bukele, who has been president of the Central American nation since 2019, is a polarising figure. His major crackdown on crime has proved popular among voters, but human rights groups say thousands have been arbitrarily arrested.

"Today, democracy has died in El Salvador," said Marcela Villatoro, an MP with the opposition Republican National Alliance (Arena).

The reform was adopted by Bukele's 57 supporters in the Legislative Assembly, and voted against by only three opposition members. Critics say the move will entrench one-party rule in the country.

"Thank you for making history, fellow deputies," said the president of the Legislative Assembly, Ernesto Castro, from the ruling New Ideas party, after counting the votes.

Bukele, 44, won a second term last year despite a clear prohibition in the country's constitution.

El Salvador's top court, which is filled with Bukele-backed judges, ruled in 2021 that it was the leader's human right to run again.

The overhaul will also shorten the president's current term by two years, to synchronize elections in 2027, as presidential, legislative and municipal elections are currently staggered.

Despite his popularity, Mr Bukele remains a controversial figure.

His crime crackdown has caused murder rates to fall. But human rights groups say that thousands have been arbitrarily arrested during his anti-gang drive.

An estimated 75,000 people have been arrested under emergency measures that have been repeatedly extended.

"The day before vacation, without debate, without informing the public, in a single legislative vote, they changed the political system to allow the president to perpetuate himself in power indefinitely and we continue to follow the well-travelled path of autocrats," Noah Bullock, executive director of rights group Cristosal, said.

In a report in December, Amnesty International criticised the "gradual replacement of gang violence with state violence".
