None Shall Pass 3 [Game Thread]

how can anyone propose ring control measures when we don't know what the darn thing does?

Well, yeah, Rings don't kill people, people kill people. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a Ring is a good guy with a Ring. How many people (and river hobbits) should die before you guys start doing something?

I, personally, would like to shoot the darned thing into space. Preferably, to a galaxy far, far away. Do we have spacemen among us who's got The Right Stuff(tm)? BTW, the Middle-earth also had a space program, and Eärendil was the first man in space.

LOTR:
Smaug - possible
Bolg/Azog - possible
Assorted Orcs (Gorbag, Shagrat, Radbug) - hardly iconic, most people won't even know they exist.
Bill Ferney - I can't even remember who this guy is.
Grima Wormtongue - not really.
Mouth of Sauron - not really.

SW:
Nute Gunray - loltradefederation
Rune Hako - who is this guy
Greedo - barely a character
Grand Moff Tarkin - possible
Poggle - what
General Grevious - possible
Jango Fett - possible
Assorted Battle Driods/Stormtroopers - not really

There are a lot more 'unique' and interesting good characters over evils.

Yes there might be more to work with if you use larger universes, but this is a far more mainstream guy. Zack is hardly going to put in Hurin the Steadfast now is he?

The Mouth of Sauron was in the first game. I've seen plenty of games with the trade feds involved, usually as the mafia

Well, Visor wants everything in games he's not running, so that's hardly indicative of being scum. However, if we have at least four factions in this game and we're being explicitly asked to give away the One Ring on Day One (in lore the most corrupting force known to mankind, other than warm milk and ABBA music of course), I wouldn't want to hand it just willy-nilly to the first (or even eleventh!) person who asks.

trouble is, none of us have a basis on which to hand it out

Gollum with the ring? What could go wrong? Visorslash

Why do you think Visor is really Gollum?

Well, Visor, it's not your birthday, the Ring is not your precious, and you're not Gollum. This I know on a good authority.

are you claiming Gollum?

I really should get around to changing my avatar :p

You've been Saruman for so long, it's almost a tradition now. Besides, you're always scum. :D

trouble is, none of us have a basis on which to hand it out

Which is precisely why I'm not voting today. This could be potentially far more game-changing than the usual D1 random votes.

not voting to give someone dramatic power is a thing only a wolf would do

Asking people who've played before, what has the Ring done in the past?

Screw with the players in a metaphor more perfect than Zack could have planned.

The Ring in the second game offered some protection from various night actions, provided you took no action yourself. So, it's decent, but it's not really worth the price of admission once the town got into a frenzy over it. Especially with people running around hunting for it. A rumor about corruption started, which, partially enabled by a misconstruction about the true nature of the faction balance in the game, led to people assuming the Ring turned people evil once they had it.

Note- I'll be fairly inundated the next 2 days, but normal activity should resume over the weekend.

So, if we're basing this off past experience, it might just end up being a minor boon. A decent but not really game twisting item. On the other hand, the Ring wasn't initially voted on at that point either, so I'm assuming it has some slightly more considerable benefit that at least partially offsets the hostility whoever grabs it will inevitably occur from various factions.

Or maybe it doesn't, and Visor's greed is leading the charge to take the Schmuck bait Zack is offering. *shrug*

This could go any number of ways, but the fact that we're electing a Ring Bearer means something mechanistically.
