Nuke Nes: After Victoria

Based on the Lowland's quiet observation through official channels (and unofficial channels ;)) of the American government, the Lowlands proudly announces a radical makeover of our government from a parliamentary system to a democratic federal government based on the the UCSA.

Our government will be based on a brand-new constitution Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk. (I have no idea what it means :p)

The Republic of the Lowlands has three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial. Through a system of separation of powers, each of these branches has some authority to act on its own, some authority to regulate the other two branches, and has some of its own authority, in turn, regulated by the other branches. In addition, the powers of Amsterdam as a whole are limited by Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk, which leaves a great deal of authority to the individual states.

The Lowland Congress is the legislative branch of the Republic of the Lowlands. It is unicameral, unlike the United Confederate States of America's Congress, each representing a congressional district and serves for a six-year term. Each seat shall be apportioned among the various provinces by population. There are a total of 100 seats in the Lowland Congress.

The Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk grants numerous powers to Congress. Congress can levy and collect taxes to pay debts, provide for the common defense and the general welfare of the Lowlands, to borrow money on the credit of the Lowlands, to regulate commerce with other nations and between the states, to coin money and regulate its value, establish post offices and roads, promote progress of science, define and punish piracies and felonies, declare war, raise and support armies, provide and maintain a navy, make rules for the regulation of land and naval forces, provide for, arm, and discipline the militia, exercise exclusive legislation in Amsterdam, and make laws necessary and proper to execute the powers of Congress. Congress seats shall be elected through popular vote.

The Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk also provides for the creation of an Executive Branch, headed by a President of the Lowlands and his delegates. The President is both the head of state and government, as well as the military commander-in-chief and chief diplomat. The President, according to the Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk, must ensure that the laws be faithfully executed. Within the executive branch itself, the President has broad constitutional powers to manage national affairs and the workings of the federal government, and may issue executive orders to affect internal policies. The President may sign or veto legislation passed by Congress. He may be impeached by a majority in Congress for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors. The President also has the powers to pardon criminals convicted of offenses against the federal government, enact executive orders, and (with the consent of Congress) appoint Supreme Court justices and federal judges. Unlike America, the Lowlands President shall be elected through popular vote for a six year term. However, the president can only have a max of two terms.

The Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk also establishes a vice-president spot to advise the President and succeed the Presidnet should the President die. The Vice-President is elected with the President as a running mate, akin to the Presidential elections in the UCSA.

Lastly, the Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk establishes the judicial branch. The highest court is the Supreme Court. The court deals with matters pertaining to the Federal Government, disputes between states, and interpretation of the Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk, and can declare legislation or executive action made at any level of the government as unconstitutional, nullifying the law and creating precedent for future law and decisions. Below the Supreme Court are the courts of appeals, and below them in turn are the district courts, which are the general trial courts for federal law. Judges of the Supreme Court shall be appointed by the President of the Lowlands.

The Staatsregeling voor het Bataafsche Volk divides the military of the Lowlands into three branches, the Landmacht (army), the Marine (navy), the Luchtmacht (airforce), each headed by a special general, whom are all under the command of the civilian President.

With that, President Charles Beerenbrouck officially ended martial law and the brand new Lowland Congress declared elections to be held.

@mrpwn3r:

The Dutch elements made my day :D

Since Lowland's recent announcement of elections, the Lowlands has been fragmented into two political parties, the Christian Moderate Party and the Labour Party.

Danudirja Setiabudi

And

jb_van_heutsz.jpg

Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz

For office of Vice-President of the Republic of the Lowlands

The Labour candidates acomplishments:

Indonesian Professor Danudirja Setiabudi:
The first Indonesian to teach at Amsterdam University.
He was originally the driving force behind the acts that ended racial inequality and sexual inequality in the Lowlands.
Mr. Setiabudi is considered one of the great freedom fighters in Indonesia during the late 19th century.
He is of half-Indonesian and half-Dutch descent.
Although many question his inexperience politically as well as his race, he was nominated thanks to the majority of Indonesia voters in Indonesia.
He also supports the Treaty of Washington and the League of Nations and is eager to end the Lowland's isolationist foreign policy.
Mr. Setiabudi supports building closer ties to the UCSA.

Admiraal van de Vloot Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz (JB van Heutsz)
Admiraal van de Vloot (Admiral of the Fleet).
The man who built the strongest navy on the planet. (Though I'm sure the UCSA has something to say about this :mischief:)
Commanded military operations in the Carrabeans, Japan, Arabia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The Labour Party's goals:
Economy: Socialist and progressive economy. No tariffs.
Foreign Policy: End isolationist policy. Join the League of Nations. Resign the Treaty of Washington. Closer relations to UCSA.
Military: Expansion of the Lowland's navy.
Domestic: Grant domestic freedom to East Arabia and Indonesia. Encourage religious differences. Build mosques in Indonesia to increase education. Modernize Indonesia and Eastern Arabia. Increase taxes and create a graduated tax.

----
OOC: Whoo. That was tiring. I'll wait till later to do the Christian Moderate Party. Thanks the loser. :p

To: Republican China
From: Republic of Lowlands

Understand this. Your country is at a severe disadvantage to the Empire of China as the UCSA and Russia have chosen to invest heavily there. Believe us, we can already tell you that you won't get reparations.

Republican China's best bet would be to have other nations (like Japan, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Boer Republic) invest your country to quickly modernize it, lest you falter to the Empress in Beijing.

Has the UCSA invested heavily in us, or Imperialists.
Also, as you are a great country, would would like to have you invest in our country.

BTW: Nuke kid, I have Taiwan, correct?

The Republic of the Lowlands has no interest in provoking a Russian or American response by investing in your nation.

Pursues the popular foreign policy of isolationism.
Shifted form of government.
Known for Treaty of Mecca.

Minister of War Hendrikus Colijn:

1926 Boer Republic Election Results

BOER2.png

Johan Hees' Communist Party has fallen in its fortunes, losing in Angola due to heavy competition and vote-splitting with the LWP. The support for this party has dwindled, due to both a growing anticommunist sentiment and vote-splitting with the Liberal Workers.
0 Territories
2 Seats (1/4 in Angola, 0/4 in Bekuanaland, 0/5 in Namibie, 0/4 in Nyasaland, 0/6 in Pretoria, 0/4 in Tanganyika, 0/12 in Transkasai, 0/8 in Transvaal, 1/8 in Zaire, 0/9 in Zambie)

Maxwell de Vetten, of the Liberal Workers' Party, has had a strong performance, though has once again failed to secure the Prime Ministry. a frustrating experience in this election. While popular throughout the Republic, there were few areas where the support was strongly concentrated. He came close to winning in Namibie, but gratefulness to the Union Party, which had been the one to launch the war, undid his chances there. He received roughly a third of the votes in all other territories, with the exception of Angola.
3 Territories (Angola, Namibie, Pretoria)
23 Seats (2/4 in Angola, 1/4 in Bekuanaland, 4/5 in Namibie, 1/4 in Nyasaland, 4/6 in Pretoria, 1/4 in Tanganyika, 5/12 in Transkasai, 2/8 in Transvaal, 1/8 in Zaire, 3/9 in Zambie)

Willem van Usteyn's Union Party, despite its victories, has been faced with a surprising number of troubles. Many voters feel that it is turning the country into a lapdog of the British, others disagree with the wars, and more still feel that the government is being a stick in the mud, while the world is going by. Nevertheless, the Unionists have won the election, albeit with a very slim minority. If all of the opposition parties unite against them, their bills may be prevented. Fortunately, the differences between the extreme right and left make this an unlikely possibility.
7 Territories, (Bekuanaland, Nyasaland, Tanganyika, Transkasai, Transvaal, Zaire, Zambie)
32 Seats (1/4 in Angola, 3/4 in Bekuanaland, 1/5 in Namibie, 2/4 in Nyasaland, 2/6 in Pretoria, 2/4 in Tanganyika, 5/12 in Transkasai, 5/8 in Transvaal, 5/8 in Zaire, 4/9 in Zambie)

Friedrich Langhoven’s right-wing Nationalist Party made the gains this year that it had expected to gain in the previous election. Most notably, they contain the balance of power in the important State of Transkasai. They have, for the moment, given the state to the Unionists, but if they are angered, or get a better deal from de Vetten’s LWP, they are completely capable of reversion their decision.

8 Seats (0/4 in Angola, 0/4 in Bekuanaland, 0/5 in Namibie, 1/4 in Nyasaland, 0/6 in Pretoria, 1/4 in Tanganyika, 2/12 in Transkasai, 1/8 in Transvaal, 1/8 in Zaire, 2/9 in Zambie)

Final Results:
Prime Minister: William van Usteyn, Union Party: 32 Seats, 7 States
Leader of the Opposition: Maxwell de Vetten, Liberal Workers' Party: 23 Seats, 3 States
Friedrich Langhoven, National Party: 8 Seats
Johan Hees, Communist Party: 2 Seats

We understand your reasoning for annulling the Treaty of Washington. It is a very flawed document. We would like to see the entire treaty scrapped.

Treaty of Tokyo

Whereas the Treaty of Washington has been annulled be the Republic of the Lowlands. It deemed necessary to create a new peace treaty between the Republic of Japan and the Republic of the Lowlands.

This treaty converts the existing cease fire between The Republic of the Lowlands and the Republic of Japan to a permanent peace. The Republic of the Lowlands and the Republic of Japan hereby agree to cease hostilities and continue normal diplomatic relations.

Congratulations on the Boer's elections. We can only hope our first presidential elections goes as smooth as yours.
Thank you. We are most pleased that the elections could take place despite the logistical difficulties in dealing with several underdeveloped regions of the territories which we have recently acquired.

The incumbent President Charles Beerenbrouck paced up and down the stairs of the old parliament buildings in Amsterdam.

In the past, he had failed. Miserably. His schemes to strengthen the Lowlands through constant warfare had completely failed. His attempts to solidify his majority in the old parliament through universal suffrage had backfired completely. He even lost the election a socialist, or near-Communist! How embarrassing.

But, Beerenbrouck was certain that the waning months going into the Presidential campaign had vindicated him and solidified his status as a great President and Prime Minister.

Then, his foreign minister came rushing out to him with the many messages from the various countries the Lowlands had reached out to diplomatically in these lonely months. After Beerenbrouck read their messages, he felt giddy. There was no doubt in his mind, whether or not he would be reelected, he was the greatest political leader the Lowlands had ever seen.
