I heard this story recently, and thought some of you would like to weigh in.

For approving a therapeutic abortion at her hospital, a Catholic nun has been excommunicated. Yet no priests have been similarly disciplined for child abuse. Comments?

While reading up on stories for a discussion I recently had with a Catholic in another forum, I came across a tidbit in an article that said the Church now has it as policy that ANY abortion = automatic excommunication, no ifs, ands or buts. No official has to consider the facts of a case, they have their excommunicaters set to auto-stun.

The comparison with the priest pedo scandal is to me, best exemplified by the case of the Brazilian 9 yr old who had the abortion. The girl, the mom, and the doctors were all excommunicated, but the dad who raped her, nopers.

Getting an abortion to save your life = excommunication
Being in any way involved in helping a child save her life = excommunication
Raping a 9 yr old girl = finger wagging :nono:

It's really cool how the Bible makes repeated mention of how disgusting homosexuality is, but uh... kinda forgot to mention pedophilia at all.

Aiding and abetting a MURDER is much more serious. You libruls with your baby murdering ways.

(Wait for it. Some conservative is going to say it.)

So, someone please enlighten me, because I'm still confused even after reading Catholic News Agency's ethical analysis of the situation: how does a life-saving medical procedure for a mother that costs the life of a 11-week-old fetus -- as opposed to both lives -- merit automatic excommunication, but not the serial raping of children? Is this a gender equity issue -- male bishops giving priests more benefit of the doubt than nuns? Does the church really view an early-term abortion to save a mother's life as a greater sin than raping children? And if so, isn't this something that ought to be clarified by now?

Good questions.

She finally saw the light I guess...

Thusly, why I am no longer a Catholic.

Well, yes. In the eyes of the church, it doesn't matter whether or not it's saving the mother's life; it's the murder of a human being. Murder is a greater sin than rape. This has already been clarified.

What is there even to discuss after this?

Most of the posters here will say "rape is worse than medical procedure", Catholics will respond "murder is worse than rape", and then there'll be an argument over what constitutes a human life that will boil down to people using different sources for their definitions.

There doesn't seem to be any actual debate to be had.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of times where women would rather be dead than have gotten raped.

Do all murderers get excommunicated by the Catholic Church?

Are you sure that the dad is Catholic?

Not Latae sententiae, no. Maybe if they murdered clergy...
Assaulting the Clergy is automatic excommunication, so murdering them would be as well.
Automatic Excommunication was introduced in responce to widescale acceptence of abortion. Perhaps when rape or murder becomes similarly acceptable, there will be automatic excommunication.

There can still be discussion about the reasonableness of either position.
