OSG-25 with kyrub's patch (1.40m)

Ok, I have got MOO working again on my system, so let me know when would be an opportune time to do my cameo. :)

If you're up for it, feel free to have a swing after ArchDuke plays. Or you can play right away if Duke reports that he's not quite ready yet.

I'll grab it in a day or two if Zed-F and ArchDuke haven't snatched it by then, still a wee bit busy.

Take your time. Next few turns will be very important.

Sorry for being out of touch for a few days; catching up now.

Anyway, I abstained my own votes, leaving us 14 - 5 rather than 19 to 5, so the game could continue on, in case anyone wants to try for a win we actually deserve.
Aye; I'd have done the same. Early election victories (and losses) are silly. In fact, if kyrub's AI is found more capable of going for the throat when prosecuting a war, we might consider playing our next SG on an Asteroids map (using the script Sargon created) - which prevents elections from occurring until the player conquers Orion.

I cracked up laughing when I saw that screenie. I can understand the Sakkra wanting to make peace with at least one of their then-unanimous enemies, but bear in mind we still didn't (indeed still don't) have the tech necessary to reach any of their worlds! What made it most precious of all to me was that - while they felt obliged to offer a tech in compensation - the one on offer was the consensus least-valuable tech in the game! (Still helps with weapons miniaturization though, so not to be sneered at completely. Plus we, you know, still can't reach any of their worlds!)

Below is my report of my turns. I am not real good at this RPing a galactic leader thing, but I gave it a shot.
Eeeeeeeeep! I always forget to include these disclaimers: I write all that crazy role-playing text for my reports because (I am crazy and) it's the sort of thing I really enjoy doing. No one should ever feel obligated to do the same thing! That said, if you like doing it (i.e. if, like me, you're crazy) I think that's terrific!

At all events, your characterization of a violently maniacal Galactic Emperor was hilarious (though sometimes painful; I've had supervisors from whom it wasn't that far off). The idea of never rejecting a tech bribe on principle, and the fear that this information was somehow leaked to the Sakkra monarch, was especially amusing in light of which tech it was!

I am heading out to take a half century long vacation or something if anyone needs me.
I notice our ex-emperor didn't say where he would be vacationing. If someone needs him, they're apparently outta luck! Given what happened to the last emperor to leave a forwarding address, I think this demonstrates this ex-emperor is no dummy.

Well, lets see what Ref thinks. If he's in favor of continuing, then we should.
Oh, definitely in favor. The turnplayer decided to go on, and I would have done the same thing. I like this challenge, and we really haven't put kyrub's patch through its paces at all yet. (Of course, we'll hopefully go right on playing games with the patch anyway, but still, a cheese election win is no way to start things off.)

Did anyone actually read that stuff I RP'd?

Just wondering.

Raid
Yup! Sorry it took me so long to reply though; Weekends are generally difficult for me, and as mentioned up-thread, my online availability is limited and shrinking in general. Fortunately, it's still fun and easy to make some time to play Orion (and write long in-character reports because I'm crazy).

My apologies, no fancy report from me.

2380

Checking out the situation and the last reports. Things do not look too good as should have been evident by the talk about forfeiting this game. That diplomatic win tastes cheap.

Any offensive actions look unlikely, so better missiles must be our research or espionage project now and a decent small ship defense fleet.

But first our new industrial technologies should be put to good use. I ramp up industrial spending on all planets.

Techwise I concentrate on Inertia Stabilizer as I love that tech on small ships.
I dial up espionage efforts on the Sakkra to 4% and then I hit end turn.

2381

End turn

2382

The same

2383

Plague stricks Rha, we could not care less.
As an answer the Sakkra dow us. Which is great as they are allied with the Psilons.

As this is a real war, I ask the Psilons to declare war on the Sakkras and enter a 300 BC trade agreement. 300 BC with the Meklars as well.

2384

Contact with the Darloks is reestablished.

2385

Factories are being built

2386

And they still are

2387

The Meklars declare war. Divine visions or something. They are at war with two other races and have no allies. Pff. Erratic neighbours, gotta love them.

2388

All around us war rages whilst we build more industry. I design Pellet 3.0 a new quick fighter to deal with the Meklar ships enroute to Phyco as our Moro defenders must stay put.

2389

Phyco looses 7 factories due to Sakkra spies.

2390

Phyco is attacked. The darn Meklar cruisers take nearly no damage (This design holds only Fusions Bombs!!), but after I destroy 2 of 14, they loose the appetite for battle.

Inertial Stabilizer stands at 45% still not discovered. But at least our industrial base looks better.

The diplomatic situation however does not. That victory was as always with MOO freak luck.

I am not sure how to proceed for now. My espionage efforts were for naught, we do not have the technology to bypass serious defenses of Merculite missiles. In honesty we should stay put till we have some good tech options on our hand. Population and industry is not that bad so far.

From your description, it sounds like you altered tech spending.

I just wanted to point out that there is a restriction we agreed on before we started that throughout the game we would hit = and leave it that way the entire game.

If its not the case or if it really did happen, I dont much care whether or not the turns get replayed or if the next person just fixes it and continues from there.

Raid

Yeah i did not equalize research. Should have known this was a variant as soon as I saw it.

I would not replay the turns, things are quiet enough as it is.

Do you guys want me to jump in now? Sounds like Archduke had some quiet builder turns.

It's fine with me if you do. It's also fine if you want to wait till there is something to shoot at :)

Just wanted to point out that in regards to the patch, we're minimizing it's benefit to the AI by playing in a smaller universe. The AI is really more adept at grabbing planets in the larger universes than it used to be.

No worries about the tech cheating ArchDuke :) I'm up next if Zed-F wants live targets, so I'll get on with it. I will most likely play not play until tomorrow, it would be very unlike me to actually get things done in a timely manner.

From what I see, shooting something will be quite difficult. Our best hope is to swoop a planet whilst two other AIs are at war and the planet is deprived of defenses by an attack.

Take your time Catwalk, I won't play till Saturday night.

Economy
Our economy is unimpressive, but it will suffice. Other than our factory upgrades (which should be completed under my reign), there's little we can do to improve our overall economy. It's time to mobilize for war!
orion_016.png

Map
Opportunities abound for the opportune all over! Everybody (except the Darloks, surprisingly) has at least 3 wars going. Darloks are allied with the Meklar, so we should probably expect a visit from them as well. With a little luck we'll be able to sneak a colony ship somewhere and hold it with fighters. More importantly, we no longer seem to be facing runaway Psilons. Planet counts:
Alkari 5
Sakkra 10
Klackon 6
Meklar 6
Psilon 9
Darlok 3

Technology

orion_014.png

orion_013.png

orion_012.png

Economy techs seem to be missing from most races. No race has both IRC3 and decent Planetology stuff. Sakkra has Soil + Advanced Eco but are stuck with IRC2. Should they get their hands on IRC3 or IRC4 they will become troublesome. This means that we can take our time and calmly poach 2-3 systems, there's no rush to go on a major crusade.

Analysis of the military capabilities of our enemies also looks promising. Noone has planetary shielding, and both Sakkra and Klackons have no BC tech at all! They will be sitting ducks against our nimble fighters once we equip them with Inertial Stabilizer technology. Klackons seem to be keen on attacking us, a whole bunch of destroyers are crawling in our space. They don't concern me at the moment, I think our pellets will be able to take out any invaders. I will put a missile base on Phyco first thing to be on the safe side, a single base improves defenses a lot.

Plan:
1) Finish our industrial upgrades and start amassing ship credits while waiting for Inertial Stabilizer to finish. I'm thankful that TheArchDuke interpreted our rules liberally and made a beeline for it ;)

2) Crank out a sizable fleet of pesky little fliers with NPG
3) Keep our eyes on these 6 targets
orion_011.png

Ryoun (Psilon) - pop 8/25 - 34 factories - 0 bases
Currently being orbited by a hostile Meklar cruiser, it might be wiped out soon.

Guradas (Darlok) - pop 14/36 - 20 factories - 0 bases
Not at war yet, but with a little luck the Meklar will drag them in against us.

Centauri (Sakkra) - unexplored
Will need to send a small probe there ASAP. I consider Sakkra the biggest threat at the moment, so taking a planet away from them would be nice. They have warp 3, though.

Drakka (Klackon) - pop 2/45 - 7 factories - 0 bases (old information)
Gienah (Klackon) - pop 23/30 - 28 factories - 0 bases (old information)
We're not in range of either of these planets, but they may be up for grabs if we get either Ryoun or Guradas, or if we get better range somehow. Will try to get information on them.

Phantos (Meklar) - pop 17/46 - 202 factories - 12 bases
Not an easy target by any means, especially since the Meklar have BC4 on their bases. Still, they only have hyper-V rockets, normal armour and shield 3. Taking the bases out with merculite missiles might be an option in the near future.

4) Lower research spending as we don't have any urgent projects other than Inertial Stabilizer. It's time to think short-term and worry about the future in the future!
5) Keep spying on everybody but Psilons (and Darloks, if their tech is too high). Relations are horrible already, and we have decent computer tech. I'll be keeping 1 spy each on Sakkra, Klackons and Meklar. Our psilon spy will be instructed to hide, I don't want to risk harming relations with them.
6) Form an alliance with the psilons. I don't consider them that much of a threat anymore, and together we should be able to wipe out everybody else quite easily. If they will then gracefully elect us emperor once the carnage is over, we shall gracefully accept. If not, the carnage may not be quite over yet.

I'll play sometime tomorrow, please comment on the plan! Zed-F, I think you'll have plenty live targets if you go after me.

After Tuesday night, I'm going to be out of town for a week for GenCon, so if I don't have a save to play by Monday night, I'm going to have to either take a skip or a reorder...

My apologies, no fancy report from me.
No need to apologize! The events of the game and your reasoning as you play are both easy to follow from your report, which makes it better in the respects that matter for the SG than some of my silly storyline ones. Also, well played! (Overlooking the missed variant as others have done; we may have taken on too many for a game meant mostly to showcase kyrub's patch anyway. Though of course we'll keep research equalized from here!)

Plan:
1) Finish our industrial upgrades and start amassing ship credits while waiting for Inertial Stabilizer to finish. I'm thankful that TheArchDuke interpreted our rules liberally and made a beeline for it ;)
Heh. And sounds good to me.

2) Crank out a sizable fleet of pesky little fliers with NPG
Mmmmmmmm. Tasty NPGs. Wait, you said "nasty"? I do not understand. Surely a typographical error there! I love NPGs. (Okay, okay, yes, I realize you meant "nasty" for our enemies.)

3) Keep our eyes on these 6 targets

Ryoun (Psilon) - pop 8/25 - 34 factories - 0 bases
Currently being orbited by a hostile Meklar cruiser, it might be wiped out soon.

Guradas (Darlok) - pop 14/36 - 20 factories - 0 bases
Not at war yet, but with a little luck the Meklar will drag them in against us.

Centauri (Sakkra) - unexplored
Will need to send a small probe there ASAP. I consider Sakkra the biggest threat at the moment, so taking a planet away from them would be nice. They have warp 3, though.
Centauri was a Psilon world (the one the lizards were trying to conquer for just ages) through the end of Raiddinn's turns; this means it just went Sakkra within the past ten years.

I believe these were last scouted around the middle-end of my turns, so ~22 years ago. Fortunately, since they have been scouted, we can bring our reports on them up-to-date just by getting a ship within a parsec.

Maybe, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have real shields before we have any Merc boats ready.

4) Lower research spending as we don't have any urgent projects other than Inertial Stabilizer. It's time to think short-term and worry about the future in the future!
That's the ticket! Let other people worry about the long term! Your reign will be long done by then! (In case it's not obvious, I actually do support this. In fact, going all-out to create an exciting short-term situation with massive potential for loss or gain is terrific for an SG. <Raises a glass to Charis>)

I concur. Hiding is a good idea when relations are more important than the probable yield, and Psilon CPU tech right now says the yield would be questionable anyway. Apart from that though, we really need to be spying a lot more than we have been. We have a CPU tech advantage over races with mouth-watering technologies, and haven't applied that nearly enough since I left office. <Steps down from ex-emperor's podium, which looks suspiciously like a soapbox.>

6) Form an alliance with the psilons. I don't consider them that much of a threat anymore, and together we should be able to wipe out everybody else quite easily. If they will then gracefully elect us emperor once the carnage is over, we shall gracefully accept. If not, the carnage may not be quite over yet.
Heheh. This game has changed a lot in the past twenty turns. If we can swing an alliance with the brains, if nothing else, it should bring some attractive targets (finally) into range.

I'll play sometime tomorrow, please comment on the plan! Zed-F, I think you'll have plenty live targets if you go after me.
Sorry I wasn't able to comment on the plan until "tomorrow" is pretty much over - though at least I got in before your report! I agree with nearly everything in your plan, as noted above, and am quite interested in learning whether there'll be some juicy targets for Maniac or (cameo/emergency-substitute?) Zed!

After Tuesday night, I'm going to be out of town for a week for GenCon, so if I don't have a save to play by Monday night, I'm going to have to either take a skip or a reorder...
Have a great time! Although I hope you'll see a save before then....

Thank you for the feedback Ref. I'm afraid my net went down Friday and got back up just now (had to get a new router). I must have used that as an excuse to procrastinate playing out my turns here. I'll play today and post the report tonight (some 8h from now, probably). Zed-F, let me know if you want me to pass you the ball!
Centauri was a Psilon world (the one the lizards were trying to conquer for just ages) through the end of Raiddinn's turns; this means it just went Sakkra within the past ten years.
That's crucial information, thanks! I'm not sure if we should be planning ground invasions or settle for wiping out aliens and claiming their land as our own. I suppose we wipe them out either way, though.
