Pre-CNES: Flowers on the Working Title

Thanks for reminding me.

^ Added back into the units post.

Looks good, this post may expand as I think of anything more.

Should more mobile units (like tanks and armored cars) get fortification bonuses? I can't really see them benefiting from it realistically speaking. I would consider making it an infantry-only bonus.

In terms of unit balance I'm slightly concerned that Stormtroopers are going to be obsoleted by a combination of Anti-Tank and Sniper/Flamethrower units. Unless that's your intention.

Quick mini-update: we're currently sitting at about 28.5% ready to go, with some of the biggest hurdles done and over with. The map is in stasis at present, but the rest of the rules are chugging along.

Tonight I'll update the main page and I'll post an update that will detail how technology will work, and will show off the first tier of the tech tree (probably without any fancy graphic, but that's for the better). I'll also give some details on how culture submissions will work in more absolute terms.

I have one final detail pass to complete, and then the map outline is done. Climate, rivers and borders to follow soon thereafter.

Land territory borders. Sea territory borders to come, and I'll be talking to Crezth if he wants to incorporate biomes into the territory map as a gameplay feature. :D

EDIT: Spoilered at JoanK's request.

Might be better if you spoiler the map. For readers' convenience :)

I would like for the mountains in the Asia-easque continent in the southeast be a bit shorter and not block the entire continent. (And maybe "surround" a strategetic province Sichuan style) Seeing that they grant defensive bonuses, having just a stalemate the size of the continent might be good or bad, but generally I would think a physically imposed stalemate to be bad. (OOC: I could see a nile-like riversystem, depending on how the mountain caps form, in the current desert valley being forced to the tip where all the ridges come together in the north.)

Great map!

Incidentally, a very similar continent-spanning range was suggested earlier by Thlayli. YOU PEOPLE, NEVER HAPPY! :p

I didn't draw in the river systems yet because I only just finished the climate, and they're not really gameplay relevant at all in this game. I might still throw some onto the final map.

Judging by the ruleset it's safe to say that biomes (as terrain types) should be integrated into or otherwise designated on the map.

Some of those provinces are slightly too small to hold the number of units they might need to. In my opinion the zoom should be scaled up, another detail pass made, and a few more largeish islands and peninsulas stuck on.

But it's a very good first draft, Iggy, and I applaud you for working so hard.

If this is going to be done like Daft's NES, it /will/ be zoomed in at 2x. And I have already begun working on drawing a biome map. :)

I am seriously considering upsizing a few of the islands, but only a tiny handful.

Good! This was my only real concern. Thank you so much for all you've done.

Don't worry about integrating province names, tooltips, icons, etc as I have more than a handle on those. Simply having a good, clean, upsized map with the finished territories will be more than enough. :)

Right-o. Now, what terrains would you like me to use? Currently I'm thinking hills, mountains, forests (tropical, temperate and boreal), plains (default) deserts, tundra. What are your plans for cities/factories?

And as a random note to Terrance, because this bothered me: There is not an Asia-continent here! Sure, the southern continent may have superficial resemblances to Asia, but by that reasoning the western continents are the Americas. :p I didn't make this map so people could go and make [REDACTED] real-world cultures! So be creative (and logically consistent, Crezth and I might want to set out guidelines for cultures on each continent), or prepare for the IggyPunch(tm).

Fine, the perfectly bisected continent of the great south east. :o

For continent spanning ranges, it really depends on how it is reflected in the provinces and if it counts as Mountains or Hills the entire way. You can have the Himalayas and still have some easier entrances into India without needing to go all navy. In the same way, having the Andes where the Urals would be would be very bad, as both the icy north and the Caucus can be fortified easily, making it a natural defensive line. IRL the Urals are no more significant borderwise than any other trans-siberian range. (other than arbitrarily chosen as a continental divider) and although useful for defense, is not naturally very hard to penetrate.

Make the ridges near the Mediterranean biomes hills might open up tactical opportunities combined with province shape: capture 1 mountain province, or outflank its defenses by capturing 2 hills provinces or using a fleet for a landing?

Many of these mountains will only show up as hills- not every mountain range is Andean or Himalayan. And the mountains do not go clear through to the coasts, so there will be more accessible ways around the edges, probably through much more valuable and arable coastal territories. The interior will still be valuable though, if only as a faster way to pass through the continent and control the shortest land access routes.

/me inserts #nes related joke about the Geographical Pivot of History and Heartland Theory.

Yes, all those terrains are correct. No more, no less, in fact. Each province will have one type (jungle, deserts, tundra, temperate) and one feature (hills, mountains, forest, featureless). Combinations of these types and features will give you your tropical/temperate/boreal forests and such; get creative!

I will be deciding which places have more city/factory provinces as we get along in the culture phase, but for now you can let that be. I have a series of tooltips and icons that can and will change throughout the course of the game which I will use to indicate industrialization/urbanization/presence of other improvements.

Indeed! This will be developed during the initial half of the culture submissions phase, which I would like Thlayli to have an active roll in adjudicating as well.
