Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Two questions:

Is the score during the game really relevant? I'm currently doing well in the tech race, but i notice other civs pulling ahead of me score-wise. I think this is because I'm out on a peninsula and stopped expanding pretty early, while they grow in land-mass and population.

Also: the little blue circles where Sid thinks you should build a city. Are they generally good or should they be ignored?

Thanks, pros!

Don't go too much on the game score. Its possible to win and not have a great score, its only relevant for a time victory really. Empire size is a contributory factor for score, so the AIs who expand loads will have uber score, but scout out for their military and they might be in a poor state so declare on them and watch their score fall away!

The blue circles... well generally you should ignore them. You should look at what you would like your city to have, and try to achieve that when you place it - the blue circles sometimes gives strange advice, but generally you want to have some resources in the BFC, which the circles do recommend. But if you feel a certain spot is better, ignore them.
Saying that though, you probably won't go drastically wrong if you followed them, but you might end up not being on rivers or coasts and stuff, and maybe missing out on a more optimal spot.

Agree score isn't that important and you can win with a low score. I'd worry about being smaller than the others, however. They can start to catch you in the tech race with more land and their production capacity will be greater. If you can, it'd be a good idea to get more land, probably through war. When you get a military tech such as Steel the AI doesn't have, you might want to declare war on a weaker neighbor and use better military units. Eventually, land is power.

You might consider the blue circles, but the AI's judgement often isn't very good. It's famous for settling one off the coast, for example.

They get destroyed, of course. And without having to fight battles against them, as if they were sitting in port/on the ground as your troops invade and blow them to smithereens or something.

This is why it can be a very good idea to determine, before declaring war, if the majority of your opponent's air and/or naval forces are sitting in a particular city. If so, target that city to be captured on the very same turn you declare war, if possible (amphibious invasions, mostly relying on Marines, are very good for this).
Ohhh alright. Thanks man I've been wondering this for a while now!

Is there a little piece of code or some other easy fix that lets cities on lakes/inland seas build lighthouses/harbors/etc.?

Thats probably XML. Find the BTS asset files (program files>2k Games etc) go into XML>Buildings and open the file CIV4BuildingInfos.xml.
Find the lighthouse entry and change this:
Code:
<iMinAreaSize>10</iMinAreaSize>

I haven't tried it, but by looking at other entries for other buildings, this kind of makes the most sense.

i'm having a trouble with the resources: they don't show on the map. when i mouse over it says they're there, but it just shows a mountain or a plain. still, i'm able to acquire them and everything (the building i build don't show either).

does anyone who knows how to solve this?

edit: also forests don't show

First off, welcome to CFC!

Check the Options/Graphics settings, though this sounds to me like it may be a problem with your video card. Check its specs against the recommended (not the minimum) requirements of the game. You may need to upgrade to see all the graphics.

If you post your video card's specs in a reply you should get some helpful suggestions on whether it's powerful enough and, if not, what a good upgrade would be.

I might look stupid asing this one, but I'm completly lost with this computer...:badcomp: but when I download a mod from here or something like that, I just don't know how tomake it activate on my game! Can anybody hellp me?

Take the folder you downloaded and put in the Mod section of civ 4

Program files>Firaxis Games> Sid Meier's Civilization 4> BTS (or whatever version you have)>Mods

I know that some of the more popular have installers in which case just run the .exe file

it's a GTX 460 (768 MB), so it shouldn't be the graphics card. i checked all the possibilities in the options menu and i don't think it's in there.

Since you say you aren't very computer oriented, I'll add that the files are probably compacted, usually as zip files, so you have to unzip them first and then put the resulting files where wabatt says.

Hmmm... not sure then. You may want to post in the technical support forum to see if you get any love over there.

And whatabout new civs, ressources, maps, LH, etc..?

Well normally they are downloaded in one folder; put that folder into Mod.
In order to play that mod you have to start Civ go to advanced options click load Mod and select which ever one you wanted to play

How does one change the name of a city that you have just conquered?

Go into the city screen and click on the city's name at the top of the window. This works for any city, even one you previously founded.

thanks
