Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I have a question.
Can I make ONE city to produce just cash? When I'm opening the city window and trying to put research slider to 0% all my cities start to produce 100% gold. What am I doing wrong?

You can set a city to produce Wealth. I believe that option comes in with Currency.

SamSniped, i see
it's kinda hard for me to understand how does this commerce/gold thing work.
so all the commerce from tiles goes to research, right? and gold comes only from shrines and trade routes? am i right?

The sliders are what use the commerce points, and the sliders are the same for each city. I f you change one, they all change. However, as bestbrian said, you can convert all hammers to gold after researching currency.

No, that's not quite right. All commerce, either from tiles, trade routes or the palace, go through the slider to become either wealth (gold), science (beakers), or culture. There are several sources of gold, including shrines. Perhaps the link in my sig could help clear things up for you.

In the Instructions for Beyond the Sword, they list 2 mods that were created by players; "Rhye's and fall of Civilizations" and "Fall from Heaven". I do not have the files for these on my computer. Where do I find them? Thank You!

Hi, I had one question. I don't know how easy of a question this is to anwser but... My question was on downloading maps from the civ fanatics form, and how I could transfer them to my Civ IV game, and play them on a hotseat via multi-player game.

what do you do with workers when it seems that pretty much all the tiles you're going to work are improved? it happens to me in about renaissance era

Put them to sleep until you need them again. Always remember that there are civs and techs that may optimize a change in tile use. For example: In my current game, I recently teched biology, which increased the food yield of farms, and communism, which allowed me to switch to State Property increasing the food yield of workshops and watermills (among other benefits). As a result, my workers are now all awake and running around to selected farms, changing them to workshops and watermills.

There are three places to find mods.
1. Select Advanced from the main menu and then Play A Mod.
2. Select Single Player and then Play A Scenario.
3. Select Single Player and then Beyond The Sword Content.

Many mods appear in all three places. Some only appear in one of the three.

I've seen "whipping" refereced several times. What does that mean?
It refers to the Slavery civic. In general, it means killing off one or more people in exchange for hammers to build stuff. Not to say that this has anything to do with the way that slavery actually worked.

Edit: in the game, the killing makes one of your citizens unhappy.

Ok, so it's the equivilent of rushing production using gold?
Same idea, except it uses population instead of gold and adds temporary unhappiness. On normal speed 1 whipped population corresponds to 30 base hammers. So, for instance, whipping 2 population in a city with a Forge yields 75 hammers (and 1 unhappy face for 10 turns).

Ok, that's pretty clear.

I've played this game for years, but always on the easier settings. Now I'm starting to up the difficulty and I know I can't cruise my way to an easy Domination win anymore. This thread and this forum have made me a much better player.

Thanks to all.

Hey guys.I was wondering how can I make great person farm and is it worth it?

Yes, it's worth it, your GP Farm is probably the most important part of city specialization. The simplest way to pick your location is just look for the spot with the most food- grasslands, maybe desert floodplains, and as many food resources as you can get (especially 6:food: tiles like grassland pigs and riverside corn/wheat). The whole idea of this city is to grow it as big as you can as fast as you can.

You'll want to have your National Epic in your GP Farm. If I have the production there, I usually put Globe Theatre there too so I don't have to waste time making happiness buildings. Farm as much as possible of the BFC, don't bother making any cottages there. If the BFC has a hill or two you can mine them to get the :hammers: you need to build everything, then maybe later on put windmills there for more food.

As far as what to build there, focus on buildings that let you run Specialists (forge for Engineers, temples for Priests, library for Scientists, etc.) The Specialists are what really give you GPP, and if you have a nice variety of buildings by mid-game, you can direct your GPP instead of leaving it mostly to chance. For instance, if you need a Great Merchant, just cram your market and grocer full of Merchants, and you probably won't have to wait long. Also, make buildings that raise your happy/health cap in the city (this is where Globe comes in handy, you'll only have to worry about the health limit).

It's more complicated than that, but that's the basics. Welcome to CFC! :band:
