Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Don't forget Dolores O'Riordan. Different style of music, but in my experience she gives a +1:culture: and a +1:) to all cities with Broadcast Towers. At least whenever "Dreams" comes on. :D

Dolores? I thought her main claim to fame would be "Zombie"?

The Celts should really have a unique theatre that gives +2 happy, +6 culture and +1 happy/5% culture slider.

Yes to you can't build.

Yes also to SOME of the bonuses. I believe that static culture bonuses stay, but everything else gets wiped (e.g., the happy from the Monument if you are Charismatic, and I believe specials like the +25% culture from the stele).

One good example of not being able to build something once you have researched a technology is the special ehyptian building, the obelisk which you can't build once you research I believe the technology astronomy.

... and a significantly increased chance of beneficial random events (and a reduced chance of negative ones), a.k.a. "the luck of the Irish". ;)

As someone whose few Irish ancestors moved to Canada because of the Potato Famine, I'm not so sure about that "luck" business.
Blue-green face = whip
I was always fanatic about staying below the :yuck: limit and getting rid of it ASAP if I goofed -- until I heard some people saying "don't fret a little bit of unhealth". Presumably -1 :food: isn't so much of a problem sometimes.

If you can use a tile with more than 3:food: you can remain productive. Angry citizens are completely useless though, apart from to whip copiously.

T'is a fine bit o' luck lad... if ye like it all terrible.

Not completely :D They add to the pop for UN/AP votes and for Trade route calcs :D But yes, in 90% of the cases angry citiens are not worth it :p

Quick question here. Are the battle odds completely messed up?

I've had 95 percent win rate, and lost. I saved just before the battle and tried 15 more times and lost all of them. I'm not going to test it a hundred times, but 0 out of 15 is pretty shocking considering the rating the computer provided.

I don't get that often (although 94-98 losses percent happen rather more frequently than they should) but usually I need at least 80 to have a win.

If you do save right before the battle and then replay the battle you'll get the same result if no other moves changed. In other words, you save a game and immediately fight the battle. You then reload the game and fight the same battle immediately. You'll get the same result because the RNG hasn't been reset.

The way around this is to load the game and move some other units and then refight the battle. This will reset the RNG. The odds have been tested and are pretty accurate. Like you, I tend to remember the 94-98 percent losses and don't attack at low odds.

Near as I can tell, you have to leave Ireland for the luck factor to kick in. At least it did whenever my "uncle" Johnny Sullivan went to Vegas...

I do not think this is right. I THINK you need to do something that needs the random number generator, which moving units does not. This generally means fighting, but can also mean popping goody huts or going to the next turn (assuming the AI will do some fighting or something).

Does basic BTS have the option for "New Random Seed on Reload"? That'll settle the issue right there.

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately it does not work for me. I reloaded the same save and moved various units prior to attacking (Even tried moving 2-3 units before battle) but I still get 0 percent win from 10 tries.

Any other ideas? If it helps, it's axe vs archer, and the animation shows him killing two archers but the final dodges all hits and kills the entire party.

Massive edit: I tried using a different unit (swordsman, full health) vs a warrior first. It gave me a 96 rating but I still can't win (0 out of 10). So basically I can't win either battles and there is no real point in losing an entire unit. How does this rng thing work?

Edit2: it seems to have worked. I loaded up the game and attacked the warrior with my swordsman. They died in battle (was a 96 win). Afterwards I strands the archer with the axeman and my axeman won. Tried this five times and it seems like it's working. Although I'm really not impressed with the battle system if this is true. Going by the same logic a warrior can defeat my armored tank with a wooden bat every time just because the computer generated a number before I saved.

What is the difference between Civilization IV: The Complete Edition and Civilization IV: the Gold edition? I thought I saw a Civilization IV: The Red Edition somewhere but can't find it on any search. Was I looking at the Complete Edition because I saw some place one that had all of the CIV IV expansion sets plus the Civ: Colonization game as well. Which one is the latest and final release of the Civ IV series and which one is the best one of the two?

Complete requires internet access to use (I know a person who hates that) but is the latest and best. Gold Edition does NOT include Beyond The Sword, which is the latest and best version. Over 90% of the forum, including me, will tell you to play BTS. For most of us, BTS IS CivIV.

Colonization is a completely different game and also isn't included in the Gold Edition, but that's a minor item. The major item is that CivIV Gold doesn't include BTS.

Thank you for such a prompt response to my thread! Is there a complete set of Civ IV & expansion sets in one set or both expansion set in one that don't require internet connection to play so I can get all 3 with fewer loads? I have BTS edition separately so if it will work with the Gold Edition, that's not a problem. What I don't have is the Warlords Expansion set and since it looks like I'm going to need to uninstall the old version and reinstall it to clear up a corrupt file I would like to get the complete set of Civ IV & expansion sets with as few disc to down load as possible. How is the Complete edition better than the Gold Edition or is it if BST will work with the Gold Edition?

CIV IV Complete has Vanilla, both expansions, plus Colonization. It also doesn't require DRM, so you can just install it from the disc, and keep playing away. The only thing you'll need to do is download the latest patch, and some Mods. :)

its probably fair to say everyone who plays civ4 goes through this stage, but the battle odds has been verified time and again. With a large stack of units attacking a powerful city you will lose some, you may lose some 90% battles but you might win some 30% battles. Although 80% sounds good, don't forget that it's odds, and you should expect to lose 1 in every 5 battles.
