Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

One more quick question.

When I was running through the Tutorial, whenever you selected a unit a little display appeared that showed the surrounding tiles it could move to as grey circles along w/ numbers corresponding to the keypad. Now it doesn't seem to be displaying when I click on a unit, does this only appear in the tutorial or did I somehow accidentally toggle it off?

There is a check box in the options screen to show the keypad controlled moves or not. I don't recall off hand if it should be checked or not to show the display but the wording makes it obvious which it is.

Options menu, Game tab, turn on "Numpad Help". ;)

This is probably asked constantly, but I haven't seen it in a few pages.

First time really messing around with Civ 4, is there any reason at all to play vanilla or Warlords instead of jumping straight into BTS? Aside from checking out the different menus, intros, etc. Thanks in advance!

There are more civilizations and options in Beyond the Sword (BTS) so I would jump straight into the latest edition.

Welcome to Civ fanatics! :banana::dance::banana:

(Asking this here 'cos not clear which topic to post under.)

1. I have FallFromHeaven2 mod working, also Giant Earth. What I would like is to play a FFH game on/with the GEM map (terrain only, without the races). I wonder if someone could say if this is possible, and if so, how to do it?

2. Also believe in giving something back. so: I'm reasonably talented musically, so if any modders would like a reasonably-short piece of music (played, written or improvised) for their project, I'm happy will do so; e.g. 2 minutes of Native American flute music.

1) Well, first of all you need to confirm that all the GEM map resources, tile types ( say, desert , plains, grass, tundra, ice, hill, mountain, coast, ocean and sea ice ) and overlays ( forest, jungle and FP ) are included in FfH 2, otherwise you will need to change the map accordingly ( it can't easily be done via worldbuilder BTW ... it is far easier to do via a text editor ). When the map can be used in FfH in terms of resources, you will need to clean the GEM civs and units out of the map ( this utility will help with that ) and to clean the reference to GEM mod ( for that you will need to use a text editor to open the map file ( that is a worldbuilder save, btw ) ... this link has a look into what you need ( and will also help you with the necessary terrain changes if needed )). A look into TMIT guide on this might also give you a hand in this section ( namely you will have to change the ModPath tag .... either clean or with the complete FfH dir name will do ).

At this time you will have a map that is usable for FfH... you can add the FfH civs with preset locations or not ( both Dale and TMIT guides will give you hints on how to do that ) if you want ( if you don't do this the civs will start at random spots of the map ) and after done all the work, you can put it in the public maps folder ((...)\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\PublicMaps ) or in the Worldbuilder saves one ((...)\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Saves\WorldBuilder ) and load it via Play scenario or Custom scenario ( both under single player in the ingame start menu )

2) I think that the best thing you can to is either simply make the music files and upload them to the downloads section by your self ( no one will complain, believe me :p ) or contact a mod maker that you think it can be interested in that ( say Varietas , GEM or BAT mods come to mind in terms of wanting some fresh music files in the terms you are proposing ) and offer your services. Again I'm pretty sure no one will think wrong of you if you do that :D

Been playing Civ 4 since it came out, and the last two games I played got to a point (January 1969 on the latest), and it hung with the "Waiting for Other Civilizations" globe turning.

Saving and resuming didn't help, nor did pulling up an auto save from the year before.

Anyone have an ide how to fix this?

Thanks!

I would like to say hello and ask if anyone has run into the same problem I have . I have recently installed win 7 , befpre on vista I could click on the bts icon and the game would start without the cd in the player , but now with win 7 I always have to start with the disk , I get a message to go to c2c for the answer but that site refuses to come up from the message link i get . If i go to the site independently i can't find the answer .

Thanks for the reply.

OK, a little more than I have time for at the moment, but I will get round to it.

Again, thanks. I have recorded a trivial 8-second mp3 sample "weird_medidation.mp3".

Not sure where to put it in the downloads section; personal area only seems to allow graphic formats, as in screenshots, and none of the the other areas (utilities, etc) are appropriate.

When I'm attacking a city with siege and wish to bombard, how do I know the percent that a catapult will remove the city defenses before I "waste" a bombard? How do walls and castles affect this? (It's been a while since I used bombard.)

Catas remove 8 %-units of defenses. Trebs remove 16. Walls gives 50% resistance to this, so Catas remove 4 and Trebs 8 against Walls. Castles give 25% additive resistance, so with Walls+Castle it's 75%, making Catas remove 2 %-units and Trebs 4.

Have you updated the game fully yet? cause i had a prev install on vista and now it is on win7 and i can still boot w/o the CD
EDIT: Welcome to the fourms [party]

Is it possible to change the names of the AI leaders?

Just for the fun of it, I'd like to but the names of some friends of mine in the game (in single player). So, instead of Shaka of the Zulus, my AI opponent would be John I. of the Does (representing my RL neighbour/friend/colleague John Doe).
This sounds like something that should be very easy to do, but I can't find it...

In top left corner of this page ...

General-> download database

When it opens the download page search for "add file" ( in the center of the page, under "navigation" )
