re: Microsoft -you can always just click on the little X on the right corner. The problem is their spying, really. Thankfully, all the Chinese supermarkets in this city keep pirated Windows XP so no one will ever be able to establish my purchasing habits.

But why exactly wouldn't you want to upgrade to Win 10 for free?

The largest reason for why PC gaming and its industry continuously falls behind is because people wont upgrade their OS. Developers need to continuously make sure their software is backwards compatible, which holds them back from utilizing the latest DX features which may be incompatible with older OSs.

Because it spies on you, because you might prefer an earlier version... any number of reasons? Say that I took your favourite X-Men graphic novel and "upgraded" it to the most recent release for free, but then you can't have your old book back. What's more, in the New Year, I'll do this, whether you like it or not.

0/10 not a tooth analogy

That's a poor comparison. In the case of a book, an operating system would be the equivalent of the paper that the book is printed on.

There's very little reason to prefer an older OS, except for the potential of being able to run really old games, but that can be remedied by using a virtual OS.

Say I took your favourite rotting tooth, extracted it, and upgraded it to a nice shiny new implant that guaranteed you the girl/guy of your choice the moment you flashed it at them in a dazzling sexy smile.

But then you can't have your old rotting tooth back.

Id do that instantly.

Well, Bhavv, given that you keep insisting that it is your personal choice to keep a rotten tooth in your head that could be actively injurious to your health, I am baffled as to why you'd think it was strange that someone would choose to keep something totally harmless simply because they want to.

Because upgrading to windows 10 is free and easy.

So is a kick in the teeth, but no one volunteers for that.

Because that would be painful.

Right. But I'll deal with those if they should happen.

As is being forcibly updated to software you didn't ask for.

No I don't think that is in anyway painful.

If you already have the software, being upgraded to the latest version for free is only a good thing.

Right. But I'll deal with those if they should happen.

Sounds illogical captain

I suspect the problem with PC gaming is that people invest hideous amounts of effort into stealing the software and getting it for free.

Why get Windows 10? I wouldn't want to buy new hardware just because Microsoft decided to remotely and forcibly upgrade my software. Also, seriously: spying software. They have no right to keep records of what I do. At all.

The clause lists the conditions under which Microsoft "will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders)..."

That narrow list of conditions includes legal demands, like search warrants and subpoenas and (presumably) National Security Letters, as well as actions necessary to "help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone" or to stop attacks on Microsoft's services.

And those terms only apply to content stored online using Microsoft's services. Here's the earlier part of that agreement, the one that defines the content covered by that clause. This section of the agreement is apparently blocked by tinfoil and invisible to the Microsoft-is-spying brigade:

We collect content of your files and communications when necessary to provide you with the services you use. This includes: the content of your documents, photos, music or video you upload to a Microsoft service such as OneDrive. It also includes the content of your communications sent or received using Microsoft services...

So yes, if you send and receive email using Microsoft's consumer services or store files in OneDrive, there's a risk that a court could issue Microsoft a subpoena compelling them to hand over that information. (Pro tip: Microsoft offers Office 365 for Health, which provides cloud services and HIPAA compliance for medical professionals who care about that sort of thing.)

But there's no risk that Microsoft is gathering the contents of your local hard disk and sending it to anyone. Zero.

....

Any company that offers modern computing services has nearly identical language in its privacy agreement. Compare these snippets from the Google, Apple, and Microsoft privacy statements:

If you're worried about your privacy then you might be put off by upgrading to Windows 10 - which is a shame, because early reviews all seem to agree that it's a really good operating system.

Fortunately, it's possible to opt-out of these privacy policies, and Rock Paper Shotgun have explained how to do it.
