Random Rants 61

Because upgrading to windows 10 is free and easy.

Not for everyone it isn't. The installer crashes when I try it, and having tried a bunch of solutions suggested online with no luck, the next recommendation is for me to do a complete reformat of my hard drive and reinstall everything.

At which point, I decided Windows 10 can go screw itself.

It also happens sometimes without notification, and then might be downloaded via e.g. mobile connection, sucking up someones quota and potentially leading to higher costs.
Ther german consumer protection center is now taking action against MS due to that.

And as Zack says, it spies on you.

Only if you're bad at setting it up.

Personally, I couldn't care less what MS sees me doing.

As is the case with most people, including those railing against MS for spying. The reason for all the anger is not because people are worried about what MS might see, it's because people think (rightly so) that MS shouldn't even have the right or capability to see it in the first place.

I mean, why does MS feel the need to spy on people? For marketing purposes? Sorry, but that shouldn't ever be considered a legitimate reason to violate one's right to privacy. What's another reason? To fight software piracy? Sorry, but that's not a good reason either. MS is a private business that makes software, not a law enforcement agency. It is not their job to fight crimes nor take any action to prevent the commission of those crimes.

If I had a problem with MS doing it I'd have a problem with Google doing it, with Facebook doing it, with Apple doing it, etc. Not worth my time to care really.

...and your situation/opinion ins the only important, or what?
There are people who care, and they should have the choice.

Yes, I think that's the problem. There are people with things that they have every right to hide, who might have good reason to fear.

What's to fear if you have nothing to hide?

No one cares about your porn collection.

Unless it contains CP, in which case you are probably about to be arrested.

Exactly.

What's to fear if you have nothing to hide?

No one cares about your porn collection.

Or your financial passwords. Or about your embarrassing medical condition. Or about your CCTV feeds. Or about this weekend's rendezvous with Miss Vavavavoom at the Hideaway Lodge. Or about your affair with Mrs. Bill Gates?

Because as we've learned from Sony, Target, AshleyMadison, and Ebay, companies are really really good at keeping private information secure, right?...RIGHT?

But why exactly wouldn't you want to upgrade to Win 10 for free?

I don't have the hard disk space to download and install it. I'm pretty sure I only have 1-2 GB free at the moment.

By the way, MATLAB is a massive drain on system resources. That's my rant.

What's to fear if you have nothing to hide?

That sentiment is startlingly similar to those you might hear in a corporate/fascist dystopia.

I find it hard to believe the line was said unironically.

Then again I've read it again and again on these forums, said with all sincerity...

What would you do, bhavv, if Windows 10 started showing you ads for dentists in the UK?

That would be evil, had I not already stuffed his mail with the best dentists in the near 10 km.

Well I actually think 24/7 surveillance cameras in public would be a glorious thing.

Hmmm… alright, let's take that at face value. Why would (should) anyone have the right to spy on my private affairs? And you haven't answered the question about ads in your system.

I'm not sure what you mean, I don't get any ads in windows 10.
