As I understand it, an Australian chav, particularly one in rural areas.

The moronic idiot big boss has put me on a new project, for which I totally have no necessary skills (okay, a bit), despite the fact that the small boss already sees that I have work overload (but didn't bother to say anything, or actually thinks this is a good idea) and no time for probably the next half year.
Yeah, just drop everything what I'm doing right now, and start something new. It's not so that anyone is relying on me, or so .
I'd not worry about the new project too much, but also other people are involved in there, who'd be dependent on me, so that is a problem.
I'll probably need to piss of my boss tremendously to get out of this. Which wouldn't be a problem if he didn't have to approve my PhD thesis at the end, AND that he is already unhappy with what I'm doing, because it's not what was initially outlined, but hey, after 3 years in the wrong direction and only 1 year to go it's definitely not the right time point to change direction.
Bloody hell.

Addition to the above: It seems there's no escape to this project.
Got also scolded today for behaving not professional enough in the meeting (I really didn't have energy to fake that), and got told that my whole work is not going as expected, and not in the right direction.
I'm not sure how giving me more work and more responsibility is going to fix this.
I feel like quitting, but then again, I like my social life here.

Oh, I'm also sick (a cold), I went straight to bed after the meeting today. I crawled out of bed right now at 7 PM because I got a call, nothing else. When I was awake for a few minutes during the day, I could only think of work. I'm sure that's not helping.
Means also that I had to postpone the date, which I had for tomorrow (I'm sure I'm not healthy tomorrow). Would've been the first date this year, and I'm also really interested in her. I hope she's still up for something next week.

She asked in her last email if she could bring a friend. I have no idea what this means, but I'm pretty sure it's nothing good.

*sigh*
This week turned into crap straight after Monday.

nevermind

I'm sick and freaking tired
of being sick and tired

personal rant: monitor did not include DisplayPort cable, so I can't actually use its Freesync feature until Tuesday, when the cable I ordered comes in.

The bad news is something with my laptop's motherboard (most likely) is broke so my laptop can't successfully boot/display (display black, but doesnt seem to be bad RAM slot or other troubleshooting, plus a little audio sequence that can be tested at powering up gives the beeps for motherboard failures)

The good news is i can get a new computer and have the budget to do so that's a little exciting. Would have liked to seen my 2010 laptop last longer or 1-3 more years so I could scope out whether I wanted to do something like a higher performance end desktop or know whether I'd be travelling a lot for work or go back to school (more laptop conducive)

Probably been like ~2 months since a last backup but didnt lose anything too critical i dont think. Actually was going to back it up this weekend lol (then encountered what seems to be its death friday).

nevermind

I agreed with the sentiment while it lasted.

And given the holidays are coming up with a few family members that can't distinguish explanation for excuse to save themselves, I know it's going to be rough.

Also, I've known for awhile that I need to pull my wisdom teeth because they have deep unrecoverable cavities, and when I woke up this morning I could feel two of them aching. On the plus side, I already have the consult and surgery scheduled for after Thanksgiving.

Yesterday I woke up with a sore throat, but it was fixed with menthol sweets.

Until today when my throats decided to start dying again.

I told my manager I might have to call in sick on Tuesday since I cant work in a cafe with a cold, but if the only symptom by then is just pain and a lost voice, then I'll be fine to turn up.

Get your tooth stuff done now before Gov. Baker's idiotic opiate plan comes into force.

Y'all who say you've had a bad week: Do you usually have good ones?

Normally it's somewhere between average and good, I'd say.
Well...besides when I post here.

Related: Tomorrow I'll need to get some opinions about if it was unethical from my boss to accept reviewing that manuscript which he forwarded me (because he's been on a paper with one of the authors), and then if it's unethical for me to review it because one of my friends is sort of doing the same thing. That'll be a great start of the week.

I've also wasted like 3-4 hours today figuring out if I can run whatsapp without a smartphone (to have it easier to talk to the lady who I fancy right now; I'm resisting buying one; phone, not lady).
Seems you can run android apps in chrome. My computer is too old to run chrome (yes...that's possible).
The plugin for that fails to run on my work linux computer. And on my work windows computer. At the windows computer I don't have admin rights, can't install the bluestacks app player.
Forgot about my laptop. Turns out bluestacks needs at least 2 GB of RAM.
Oh, forgot, this laptop has an android version installed (due to whatever reason, came with that from the manufacturer).
Yay, whatsapp runs on that (in the third attempt).
And you can use after registering whatsapp web. Well...in case you're somehow able to scan the QR code, which my laptop doesn't manage to do, probably because the camera is really crap.
Thought about setting up a permanent SSH connection from my PC to my laptop and stream the app over, but it seems there's no SSH server or even client on android. Found one after quite some time (which is a problem if you don't want to access the playstore), but something's blocking the connection, and I'm not sure if it's the firewall or whatever...I give up. Whatever. I just hope she's fine with not much talking...(I somehow see that failing).

Indeed, this thread is depressing because it's the Rants thread. I always open it and the Raves one at the same time, otherwise everyone looks like a depressed maniac.

I'm sure that right now my tonsils have died.

:eek2: Go see a doctor already.

It's like, what people describe as a bad week have for me been this entire year.
Not a single week, not even a single day, has gone well

Seriously, Republicans?

Don’t Let Progress on Tobacco Evaporate

By THE EDITORIAL BOARD
NOV. 21, 2015

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this month that the adult smoking rate in the United States has fallen to a new low, a testament to the decades of education about the dangers of tobacco and measures to discourage its use. Now Republicans in the House are seeking to slash the very government programs that have helped to achieve such remarkable success.

Cigarette smoking among adults has been declining since 1965, but in the mid-2000s progress stalled, mostly because state tobacco control programs were curtailed. In 2009, the country was back on track, thanks to an increase in the federal tax on cigarettes and a new law granting the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco products. Progress has been furthered by insurance coverage for smoking-cessation programs under the Affordable Care Act. The percentage of adults who smoke fell from 20.9 percent in 2005 to 17.8 percent in 2013, 16.8 percent in 2014 and 14.9 percent in the first half of 2015.

That progress might well be slowed or reversed if Congress approves two riders attached to an appropriations bill for the 2016 fiscal year by a Republican-dominated House committee. One rider would cut in half the C.D.C.’s budget for tobacco control, from $216.5 million in 2015 to $105.5 million in 2016. That would almost certainly force the agency to eliminate its highly successful “TIPS From Former Smokers” media campaign, which has been a very cost-effective effort at persuading smokers to quit. The rider would also reduce federal financing to help states, tribes and territories reduce smoking and operate state “quitlines,” phone numbers people can call for help.

The second rider would shield from regulation all existing electronic cigarettes, including thousands of flavored products that are designed to attract young people and have become increasingly popular, according to C.D.C. surveys. Dozens of medical organizations have opposed the riders and language that jeopardizes support for surveys that document trends in tobacco use.

The Senate has a far more rational approach. The Appropriations Committee recommended the full $216.5 million for tobacco programs at the C.D.C. and did nothing to weaken the F.D.A.’s regulatory powers. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. This is no time to slack off.

:eek2: Go see a doctor already.

Its viral tonsilitis unless the throat pain goes away tomorrow and is replaced with a runny nose.

I've had this enough times before, but less often than once a year, though always around Christmas.

Its not an emergency unless white stuff starts sprouting out of them, which I've never had (strep throat).

If I get a runny nose, I can't go to work. If it just remains a sore throat then I can.

And I don't get it anywhere near enough for it to be chronic, though I handily now keep a jar of Jakemans throat and chest sweets on my desk (more so for acid reflux induced throat irritation).

I had tonsillitis once and I swear I almost died from it. It started as a sore throat and then over the course of the next five hours, I developed an intense fever coupled with chills and aches all over my body. I ended up sleeping for a solid 20 hours and my wife said she was seriously considering calling an ambulance to take me to the hospital. The worst symptoms passed after about 24 hours and I had the sore throat for about a week.

It probably wouldn't have been so bad if I had gone to a doctor, but initially I didn't think it to be anything more than a cold as I had never had tonsillitis prior to that, and the next thing I knew I was practically in a coma.

That's bacterial tonsilitis which is a medical emergency and needs antibiotics (2-4% morbidity rate).

I've never actually had that.

I'm spending all day in bed, and didn't get a runny nose or bacterial symptoms so I can work tomorrow!

The only way it says this can be caught is direct saliva or phlegm contact, so I have no idea why I get it every couple of years or so often.
