Random Rants 76: Argh! Augh! Ahhh!

Why do I go and read comments section? It's never a good idea.
Comment sections are cancer practically everywhere. I try and read comments at Space News just to get a feel how the wider industry is reacting to news pieces and half of the time it turns into Trumpist attack on reality. I guess that's too be expected when the industry is run by a smallish number of rich old white dudes.

A very silly rant: Although nobody was speeding around it, the landlord put speed bumps around the private road that our apartment complex is on. It stretches right across the road (no sidewalks, so no room to go around), and it's big enough that I can't really step over it. It makes it harder than it ought to be.

I almost had a bank account set up and they want me to call them with a phone to make an appointment to finalize it. They never mentioned this at the beginning. I tried earlier to sneak away the phone but she woke up and wouldn't let me have it.

Can you walk there? You can do it in person.

It said I had to make an appointment, though.

Right, you can do that in person. The clerk at the counter can make an appointment with an adviser/account rep. It's possible you can just walk in and have the appointment straight away. I've never had to make an appointment for later any time I've gone.

Ok I'll try that. I hope the ground isn't too slippery tomorrow. There was a bad snowstorm today.

Some people here are completely vicious. I've been pushed out of the way at places like Superstore (grocery store where you have to do your own bagging), and I recently left a gaming forum after the umpteenth time that one of the posters who works at a Walmart in Ontario posted disparaging remarks about disabled people, seniors, and people on social assistance. After she mocked people who use walkers, I finally PM'd her and said, "You are mocking people like me, and it really makes me feel like crap, like I and people like me don't deserve to be out in the community and go shopping because we might momentarily inconvenience the store staff."

Instead of a return PM, she got in a huff and posted publicly that "Someone" has a problem with me talking about my job so I'm not going to post anymore" - and then the rest of the regulars jumped in to vilify whoever that "someone" was... so I finally just decided to hell with the lot of them, explained what bothered me, why, that I'd sent a PM in hopes of reaching some understanding, but since nobody seemed to care, I'd just leave.

One of them said, "Well, you should have told us you were one of these people" and I figured, no, why should I? It's just basic civility to not mock seniors, disabled people, etc. who are in their situation through no fault of their own.

As for talking about her job, she would complain endlessly about other things, too. I told her those didn't offend me. I don't care about fights over Christmas turkeys when they're on sale. But she took it as all-or-nothing, so there it is.
Don't return to that forum for a while. At least you have us. :)

One of the reasons I don't have my degree yet is that the university needs some stuff to be done in person but only after booking a turn online and the online system is broken but you can't go to complain because you don't have an appointment to be allowed and… :crazyeye:

aimee, go prepared for any bureaucratic shenanigans.

well I appreciate the refs screwing the Saints out of a win this week so I don't feel obliged to watch the 2002 Super Bowl

I assume that they'd just have screwed the Saints out of a Super Bowl win later anyway

the passage of time is making me steadily less and less rational about this

Aren't you 17 years too late?

The Rams and the Patriots played in the 2002 Super Bowl.

The Rams and the Patriots are going to play in the 2019 Super Bowl.

That still does not explain your sudden reluctance to watch a match from 17 years ago.

It's a rematch that he anticipates will end the same.

Yeah, well, but it's ‘football’ so… well, I'll just chalk it down to the fact that I cannot connect with that ‘sport’.

This is sounding like she doesn't want you to have any contact with people. Isolating someone is another form of abuse. Does she have some idea that you've been looking into living on your own?

Most banks shouldn't be too busy for a person to walk in and ask for someone to help set up an account. So many people use ATMs and online banking now that there aren't as many in-person things going on.

Aimee, it's very encouraging that you're taking these steps. When you're at the bank or post office, maybe there would be a phone you could use to contact Canadian Mental Health (tell them your situation and ask for a social worker to help you).

Don't return to that forum for a while. At least you have us. :)

I think she guessed to some extent because she's suddenly keeping her cellphone close all the time. Shes become really a lot more erratic since she had a stroke two years ago.

Does she read your posts here? Hopefully not! This is a situation you really need to be free of, so we're glad you're taking these steps. Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's hard at first, but it does get easier.

No, if she did I'd definitely know about it.

Anyways $#@% had a setback. I got up to use the bathroom and tripped on one of my cats and fell and lnaded on my knee. I guess I wont be going anywhere tomorrow.

The heating stopped working yesterday, just in time for the first day of this winter with consistently below 0°C.

It might just be a placebo thing but I've always found that putting on fuzzy socks can help you stay warm, even though it only covers like 5% of your skin's surface area.
