Random Rants 76: Argh! Augh! Ahhh!

Rant: It seems account verification for everything requires a cell phone. I understand the reason for this but it stinks when you don't have a cell phone.

I don't have a cellphone either but this is another country. What type of thing are you trying to sign up for?

I was trying to get my new bank account onto my PayPal account. They wanted a cell phone number. Furthermore, doing some further research says that the phone has to be registered in your name, so prepaids won't work. :(

My phone number is attached to my PayPal and it's a prepaid. I don't see how they'd know what the name is anyways.

They wanted a cell…
I didn't know that, but I've never been on PayPal.
What are we coming to. :shake:

Plus I wanted to use PayPal to get money from a survey site I found (I checked, it's legit) and the survey site itself also requires SMS verification. Kind of stinks.

I wonder if there's a way around that. Have you called the PayPal customer service number? They actually have real humans on the other end and have always helped me when I've got problems.

:scan: I'll have to bear all the above in mind for when/if I get my situation back on track and I need to take payment via PayPal.

Which also requires access to a phone. I guess getting one is Phase 2 of my plan.

Cellphones are death traps that cause dependence and I'm less stressed without one, but in your particular case it might prove to be the opposite -or not?
Who'd be paying for the cellphone? You or your mother?

She can't know about it.

There's not much that can be done without a phone these days. Is there anyone around (ie. neighbor or nearby business) that would let you use their phone?

I think PayPal also has an online customer service chat option, so you could try that. I just find it easier to talk to someone personally there so it's not as awkward to ask questions.

Most of the stuff I found about the issue mentioned how unhelpful the customer support was. So I'm not holding out for that one.

Well, my landlord would probably rate closer to a slumlord than a reputable landlord. As long as physical cash (no cheques :nono:) is in her hand at the beginning of every month, she doesn't care. She's your average Vancouver homeowner who shoddily renovates their house into separate suites so they can rent out "apartments" and ease the burden of a 1.5 million dollar mortgage. It's bottom-of-the-barrel housing and it's a pretty good arrangement with that in mind. My previous place was worse, much worse, so I don't take my current arrangement (3 and a half years, somehow) for granted despite its... eccentricities.

She didn't think to ask about his visa but I did. He's not allowed to live here, or work here, or study here. Basically, a tourist visa. He wants to stay for six months so it'll be a temporary issue, I suppose.

I don't know if his being here is a rant. I'm imagining a lot of issues surrounding him living here because the people who were here legally in the past weren't a bundle of joy to live with. What is he going to spend his time doing? What if he gets in trouble with the law? Stuff like that. It also seems like a stupid mistake on my landlord's part since she complains about every other tenant that lives here. I feel like she'd have better tenants if she asked questions and didn't specifically try to rent to people fresh off the boat who've never lived with someone who didn't change their diapers.

This one can actually speak English, though, so that's already a step ahead of the previous people I've lived with. He also specifically asked about cleaning and it sounds like he has a strict father overseeing his little adventure, so maybe it won't be too bad. It'd be just my luck if he ends up being the best roommate I've ever had and he's gone after only six months.

Urh dont you have control of the entire unit ? I figured you would find a roomate collect rent and be in charge of him
That kind of thing is also happening a lot over here as well, rents have been on the rise for a while now and lot of landlords have been doing this kind of thing to get more rent money. Also the kind of people living in such arrangements are pretty much those at the bottom. Thats why its better if you find a reliable roomate and just split the rent / utilities and have your own place. Rather then landlady choosing your roommate for you

Yeah landlords whom need money will put in anyone, but if its a boarding arrangement getting rid of bad tenants is way easier then an actual lease.

What's up with people who sit down on the bus but automatically sit on the other seat? HELLO, there are 2 seats there for 2 people, not 2 seats for 1 person to sit on the outside and the other to be unoccupied.

I have seen this a lot lately and it irks me a bit. And the people who sit on the other seat do so nonchalantly, they think they are doing no wrong.

Not sure I get what you are saying here. I sit on the aisle seat when I get on a bus, generally. If the bus is crowded and people are standing I'll certainly either slide over or get up to let them in*, but I don't just slide over to the window as a matter of course.

*Kinda depends on how far I'm going on the bus. If I'm going to be off soon I'll generally stand up, where if i am headed across town I'm inclined to slide over.

I'd need to pay 120 to 150% more than I do right now to be able to do that and rent is already 80% of my income. That ain't happening.
