Random Rants 76: Argh! Augh! Ahhh!

Based on that post, it seems like you know what you want to do. The only question is, can you make money doing it.
There are other things I'd like to do, like living abroad and teaching English or something. That's part of what makes it hard to decide. That, and the fact that my goals and my opportunities get in each other's way. I can't live abroad, work with languages, live near enough to my parents to visit, work with what's left of nature, and keep my current pay all at once.

Man, I know that life. Disabling the cache to refresh the thing so that you can look at whatever changes you made can get old fast.

I was measuring a couple things to see if I wanted to put them in different places. So I move a couple things around, and low and behold my tape measure is gone, and doesn't reappear after 15 minutes of looking for it, but does within one minute of my going and getting another one... :wallbash:

On top of that I also have to clear my site cache and the CloudFlare cache.

It has taken me an entire month to solve the problem of having two half pairs of socks. Yesterday I found another half pair and it matches.

But, yes, inanimate objects are evil like that.

All of my regular socks are the same color. My winter socks are different colors, but since it's rarely cold enough to wear them, none have gone astray.

(it is cold enough to wear them now, so my socks I'm currently wearing are white and light green - in case anyone cares :p)

Winter? What is this thing called winter?

It's the reason I'm wearing 5 layers of clothes right now, including a fleece housecoat and winter-weight socks, and I'm still cold. I did have a heater the manager let me use, but he took it back this afternoon; there's another suite without much heat, and they have a new baby there. So I have to do without tonight, and I've been promised another heater tomorrow.

Environment Canada says it'll be up to -22C tomorrow afternoon, which qualifies as warm, given that it was nearly -50C a couple of nights ago. Therefore, I plan to try to get a couple of errands done.

Mom's podiatrist said that her MRI confirmed the diagnosis made from the x-ray. Even though 2 weeks of antibiotics have left her foot looking almost completely healed, there is still a bone infection on both sides of the metatarsalphalangeal joint. The doctor said we could try putting her on intravenous antibiotics for 6 weeks, but that has less than a 1% chance of actually eliminating the infection and would probably just buy us some time before we need to surgically remove the infected bone. She recommended we go ahead and amputate the toe within a week.

Bro, the Mark Twain National Forest is at your doorstep, massive and full of awesome nautral splendor. Become a forest service ranger and work there. God knows they need committed public servants. That forest is dope af and you could have a big impact keeping the place clean and safe. We need people who care to be out there defusing mountain dew meth bombs and dealing with poachers and illegal vehicle users.

It's ground level action to maintain the environment and it's part of the oldest (and dare I say most badass) natural park system in history.

One of my new coworkers has decided to spend all of his breaks in the cramped break room talking on the phone. He sits in the center of the room, which usually only has about six people, interrupting any conversations the rest of us might have. Even if we are all silent, it seems rude to me to carry on a private conversation in front of and in the middle of everyone else. It would be one thing if his wife called him one morning. He calls her, and other places, every single break, morning and afternoon.

It is bothersome.

edit: Phrossack is in Missouri? I have gotten several job alerts looking for conservationists for Mark Twain, specifically, as well as others park services. You can definitely find a job there.

Well if he will not stop, I assume you have asked him too, why not join him.
Just carry on talking, even if you have to talk louder. If you have friends, relatives neigbours etc with his wifie's or his name drop them into conversations as often as possible, they will not help but listen to you rather each other which will hopefully make him want to make the calls elsewhere.

When my state was being affected by that polar vortex last week, I was wearing like three or more layers. Sweatpants, an undershirt, a sweater or turtleneck, my cardigan, and often I still wrapped up in a blanket. I must've looked like a giant grape or something with hair.

No socks though, hell will need to freeze over before I'll start wearing socks.

The reference to mountain dew meth bombs was not a joke. The entrance I used to get into Mark Twain National Forest had a lot of warning posters from the park service warning you not to disturb soda bottles that you come across as tweakers had taken to using them as portable meth reactors that they would dump in the woods to slowly cook. If you disturbed them at the wrong time they would burst and douse you in caustic chemicals.

That mountain dew meth bombs exist is a rant all on its own.

Hmm...I could ask my friends who are into that sort of thing.

I'd be wary of working for the National Park Service or federal government in general, though. As we've seen, Federal employees are always targets for cuts and furloughs over political stunts. The state-level Department of Conservation or a similar service could be worth it.

Every job has its downsides. I can hope that when this administration is finally over they will pass legislation to prevent future shutdowns but there are so many other dumpster fires to put out that I'm not sure this will be fixed.

What would legislation to prevent future shutdowns look like? How would it not come into conflict with the text of the Constitution?
US Constitution said:
No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law;

I don't know, it's just an idea that several legislators talked about during the latest shutdown.
