Got a parking ticket. So that's roughly 90€ out the window.

Ok, I was at my nephews wedding this weekend and the hotel we were staying at was in downtown Chicago.
We get in the room and turn on the room lights and on the wall we see this monstrosity and started laughing.

Ok, Now we know we're staying in a Yuppie hotel. There were no real drawers to put our stuff except for a single drawer in the night stand.
I keep thinking of the movie Demolition man and weeping for the next generation.
Talking to the other guests at the wedding, every room had one of these, with different messages.

If you're staying in a hotel that is costing you over 500 bucks a night, do you really need daily affirmations?

I really wonder just when those Game of Thrones strategy game ads will finally stop (at least on Cfc)
And 95% of them just show the faces of the tv actors. That right there tells you what the developers themselves think of their game's worth and potential when there is next to no actual original screen in the ad.

GoT strategy game budget spending: 50% on HBO GoT license, 49% on ads, 1% game development.

Waived a protection and immediately got burned by a client. Womp womp. Believing in the best of humanity (or, really, a bare minimum standard) is not a winning strategy.

People are wack. This morning reading the news put me in one of those moods.

Nonpayment, of course. I made sure they can never get work again from where they hired me from, though.

I usually require an upfront payment for first-time clients, and then I waive that when they return to cut down on fees. This time, likely due to a significant financial crunch, I didn't bother insisting and just went ahead and did the work, expecting them to pay upon completion. Lo and behold...

The stupid thing is that I know I keep getting burned but I do it 2-3 times a year, again and again. It seems so reasonable. Agree on work, do work, get paid. AND YET.

Contracts are always needed. Waving/changing the deal is always a risk if you just trust the other side to stick to what they said. Only happens if they are really good people, ie rarely.
Likely has happened to most others as well - myself certainly included.

I don't know if this would work but if there's enough of them, you might consider talking to a lawyer to go after them all at once.

Small rant: My cat ran in front of me and I accidentally kicked her and she scratched me. :(

I kicked mine the other day for the same reason. She pretended to hate me for a few meals. (two) before she loved me again.

I have taught them the phrase cat fud. They jump up whenever I call it out.

Recently had to take my cat to the groomer because she got a pile of matted fur on her hind end that I couldn't get out with the comb. She was mad for a few days afterwards.

Shaving your butt will do that to you.

Our air conditioning seems to have to stopped working. I can hear and see it blowing, but the air it blows is no cooler than the rest of the room. Dad said he used to pay to service and insure the AC, but cancelled that about 2 years ago. It was working as well as usual this morning (keeping the downstairs around 71 degrees Fahrenheit and the upstairs more like 80 degrees), but when I came back inside from doing some yard work this afternoon I noticed that the thermometer in the den downstairs said it was up to 83 degrees inside and 89 degrees outside. Now the outside temperature has dropped to 86 but the inside temp is up to 84. The weather report says to expect a high of 97 degrees tomorrow.

Have you changed the filter(s) lately?

Go outside to the evaporator (the part of the AC that is outside the house...hopefully not on the roof. It should have a big fan, which should be turning. It consists of a big box made of vented sides around a compressor and coil arrangement. The fan pulls air in through the vents and over the coil and blows it out the top.

If the fan isn't running it obviously won't work well, but usually still works a little until the compressor overheats and blows the fuse. The fuse is usually in a little panel attached to the wall at the end of a short cable coming from the box. If you have any experience with electrical equipment you can probably check the fuses without hurting yourself, but you should definitely trip the main breaker to the AC first. If the fuse is bad I'd replace it, once, to see what happens. It may show that the fan doesn't run and you can turn it off before it overheats the compressor, and when you call for service you might just need a fan. If you replace the fuse and everything seems to go back to normal the next paragraph almost certainly applies.

If the fan is running look and see if the vented sides are clogged up with dirt, leaves, dog hair, old newspapers...whatever might get sucked up by a fan. It might be worth turning the AC off and blasting the vent slots with a hose. This is usually what overheats a compressor and blows the fuse even if the fan is running.

If the fan is running and there's plenty of air flow the most likely cause for a sudden loss of cooling without any electrical failures is, unfortunately, a rupture that let all the refrigerant out.

I think we are overdue for a filter change. I know I changed it in December, but think I forgot to change it again this spring. I remember it was really hard to get it to stay in place last time, as the holding clip was broken. I had to use duct tape which was a challenge in such a cramped space at such an awkward angle. (I changed a filter at a Habitat house last month, which despite being located in a crawlspace was much easier. It was a more modern unit, whereas ours is at least a year older than me.)

I did not even have to go outside to see the evaporator blowing at full speed. From the laundry room window I could see how strongly it is blowing the leaves of the nearby trees.

(While standing there I also noticed that the vent hose from our dryer is disconnected, and looks beat up enough that we'll need to replace rather than just reconnect it.)

There is a lot of ivy growing on the ground near the evaporator, and a couple feet up the wall covering the lines leading from the house to the unit, but I did not notice any leaves or other debris in the vents.

I was initially concerned that the problem might be that I damaged the outside unit when trimming some tree limbs that were hanging over the laundry room roof. I noticed the problem after coming inside right after cutting those branches down. When I was up on the ladder it looked like one limb was falling so that it might hit the AC unit, but when I went out and checked I saw it fell about 2 yards away.

My dad went ahead and called an HVAC company and asked for a technician to come up and assess the situation tomorrow afternoon. We turned the AC off for the night as it was doing no good, and are using fans instead for now.

@MagisterCultuum we just had similar issue with our unit. The electronics area inside the outside unit had been invaded by spiders and it was filled with various webs and stuff. In addition a spider had gotten fried on one of the contacts and caused short. We had not cleaned that area in over 7 years. The fix was a new set of contacts and a thorough vacuuming of the space.
