Random Rants 91 - Semiprimal Rage

It takes time for a 2-litre container of frozen-solid milk to thaw. Even in the fridge milk only keeps so long. And the fridge in my old suite was horribly temperamental and delighted in randomly choosing which side of which shelf was going to be frozen solid, and when. I've had frozen milk, frozen egg salad (absolutely not edible when thawed; it's disgusting)... The only time I ever deliberately froze milk was when I had a small bottle of flavored milk. Stick it in the freezer, and when you want it, let it thaw a bit and then shake it up. It's like a milk version of a Slurpee.
Ah, I see. I would put the bottle in a larger container of cold tap water. That would defrost it quickly while keeping the temperature low. I frequently do this with something frozen, usually meat.

The settings that health and safety recommends for fridges here in the UK and enforces on cafes and restaurants are quite cold, enough to leave your salad etc frozen (and waterlogged when it thaws) if left overnight.
I suspect most domestic fridges are left at higher temperatures. I know ours is.

I reckon the laws will go the other way, as it would be an easy win on the front of saving CO2 emissions to make fridges and freezers run warmer.

And this is all about the bankruptcy of Purdue Pharma? I do not understand what incentive the state has to accept any of these conditions. If they do not want to accept bankruptcy they can always face the lawsuits. If they want to use bankruptcy to escape some of the consequences of their actions that is great for them, but why should they get to add extra conditions? What is the state gaining by accepting these conditions?

Just because something kills a million Americans and costs the US economy $4trillion (seriously, that's what economists estimate it at) does not mean that it is illegal. And if it is not illegal, then the government has limited options. It is part of the US Constitution that no law can be passed making an action illegal that happened before the law was passed.

People around here getting way too comfortable setting off fireworks any old time, even though its only legal 2 nights a year. [pissed]

I live in a forest. People like to set off fireworks in their yards very close to the underbrush. A stray bit of phosphorus in the bush and all of our houses go poof.

I hate these people.

The store I was in had egregious prices for all but the store brand hairspray. I am quite finicky about it blowing in my face, so I always get the good brand. This time, I got the store brand, and it’s true that sometimes you do get what you pay for—the “savings” of buying the store brand in this case is actually a sham: the rate of attrition of this spray is far inferior to my regular brand, thus necessitating more frequent consumption and in greater amounts.

But I wasn’t going to pay nine bucks to that store for something I usually get for six.

You use hairspray?

Disgusting stuff. I remember when my SF convention roommate use hairspray as part of her costume. The outfit itself was blue, white, and gold, and she used gold-colored glitter hairspray.

Even I was combing that crap out of my hair days later and I hadn't used any of it.

Does that mean four decades past your prime? :mischief:

fyi, when I'm Godkingemperor, the phrase "The _________ of it all" will be verboten. Just 'cause I like you guys, I thought I'd give you all a heads-up before my ascension.

Also, saw a dead rabbit in the road this morning. That was a great way to start the day.

I'm an idiot.

(Assembled Civfanatics: 'well, those of us who cared to keep track have been suspecting it for years, we just couldn't find a polite way to put it in words').

Granted, but this is a new development.
Last night I felt tired, so tired I told myself, 'oh, surely I can sleep without taking my sleeping pill'. And I did.

(CF Assembled, again: 'do please tell us, how many police procedurals did you watch where it turned out the The Guy Who Did It was also The Guy Who Did Not Take His Meds?')

A thousand. And I did fall asleep last night. Unfortunately, I also woke up hours before sunrise, and now it's 9.45 here, and I'm ragged already. :spank:

So whom did you murder?

I was tasked to set up a project meeting, so made a doodle. Now I have the pleasure to decide between a date, where my boss can't attend, and a date, where the project leader can't attend. Brilliant.
Get those two to agree on a new date.
