Mid 20's

No I haven't ground them but I spent some time yesterday mentally trying to unfriend them. Not that I'm going to be their enemy or anything. I just don't want to associate with them outside of work anymore. They weren't really friends anyways, more that we were friendly coworkers. And we can stay on good terms, I just don't want to associate with either of them.

One of them is kind of my protege as he wants to do propulsion stuff and I'm struggling with some issues related to that as well and it's dragging on me.

That would explain the inexplicably strong views I encountered from some quarters when suggesting at the Paizo forum that their new RPG edition should include a Celsius translation for temperatures in Fahrenheit. You'd think that Fahrenheit was God's chosen scale based on that discussion.

There are some older Canadians and some rural Canadians who refuse to use metric unless they absolutely have to. These are also the people who blame Pierre Trudeau for everything they think is bad, even though he died nearly 19 years ago and had retired from politics 15 years before that. These people also blame Justin Trudeau for things that happened before he was born and while he was still a child.

For me, the metric system finally made a lot of things make sense. It's been incredibly frustrating over the years when the appliances I bought only had instructions for Fahrenheit temperatures (hello, microwaves are also sold in Canada). I chose my new toaster oven because its temperature dial has both Fahrenheit and Celsius. That way it doesn't matter which scale the packaging uses, or a recipe uses (okay, it does - but thank goodness "bilingual" measuring stuff is also available).

Unfortunately, my younger son (aged 'nearly-10') still hasn't quite grasped this yet. Means that on the rare occasions when we're all willing to play, Catan (and other trading-type) games in our house frequently run to 2 hours-plus.

(And then when/ if I eventually get frustrated and try to hurry things along, I get accused — often fairly, it must be admitted — of curmudgeonliness/ poor sportsmanship myself...)

Yeah but your son is 10, doing things like that in a board game when you're a kid is a little more acceptable than whatever the hell it is hobbsyoyo's friends are.

They have tried to use a timer in the past to keep the game moving but I can't take an alarm going off more or less continually for 2 hours so I don't ask them to use it anymore. It doesn't help anyways, the alarm goes off and they keep wasting time.

Maybe try to find an hourglass with a timer somewhere between 3 and 5 minutes? It's not nearly as loud but just as effective at telling someone "hey, time's up"

The crazy thing is that she told him she had a boyfriend weeks ago. And truly, I was not the reason she didn't play with us. He saw the chat log, he heard what she said when she showed up. It was never going to happen, she's not into Catan. Also - I did not cajole him into playing Catan, he had every opportunity to play the games she brought instead.

Your friend is a whiny douche who's getting really butthurt that this girl isn't into him and he's just looking for things to blame that on. That's his problem, not yours, or hers.

An hour glass would be less annoying than an alarm but it wouldn't help them play any faster. If they were willing to sit through blaring alarms to attempt to renegotiate the same fail trade deal for the 13th time then they sure as hell are going to ignore an hour glass. And actually I'm pretty sure we tried the hour glass before we switched to a phone alarm.

It seems that the method is not the issue, but the enforcement.

I need to be less of a baby and either deal with it like a big boy and not whine or stop playing. I'm going the latter route which is probably telling haha

Obsessive whining is never good since it will only end up annoying people. And more importantly if overused, it loses it's effectiveness for that special time when it can turn a game.

I am not sure, but I think when you ask for directions in google maps in Finland, it gives you the bus stop names in Swedish. Sure, everywhere has both names on the signs, but the bus drivers do not know the names so say they do not stop there.
