Sprawl is an awful awful thing.

London to Gloucester is a mere 112 miles. That's not even the same part of the country...

I read something somewhere about European people thinking 100 miles is a big distance, and Americans thinking that 100 years is a long time.

Depends on where you are sprawling. Los Angeles is at the edge of a desert that spreads mostly uninterrupted for 1500 miles, so for all of its sprawl it really doesn't destroy any unique environment. Even if it does put a small dent in the desert no one is shedding tears over it. I was born to it and I know it well, but I respect the desert, I don't love it. Or even like it.

7,000 per square mile? Palmdale includes probably 10 square miles of barren desert within the city limits for various reasons, but I'd bet in the actual developed area we top 7,000 per square mile handily.

Ah Tim, the desert can be just wonderful. Embrace it!

There's only one nice thing you can say about the desert, it feels good to be out of the rain.

The one thing I hated about Melbourne was that, on the hour-long tram ride from campus to the CBD, all I could see on either side was straight rows of houses stretching all the way to the horizon. The inescapability of the city crushes your soul. At least my soul.

The heat was hot!

Yes, in summer the heat is cleansing! Quite nice.

They were only counting LA+LB+Anaheim to inflate the number. It's still fairly dense over most of the metro area.

See, the inescapable nature of the city is really akin to the same aspect of the desert. I respect the desert, but growing up in it damaged me in ways that make me immune to that effect when the city closes me in. The city at least I know that it is teeming with life, even if they are all hidden in their houses. The desert is endless miles of death.
