So a nightmare scenario came true for my family on Wednesday morning.
I work in St. Louis Mon-Thur, my wife lives and works in Rolla the entire week.
Around 4:30am most mornings, my wife likes to get up early and walk the dogs. Wednesday morning, when she walked past the college campus, a man exited a building and followed her almost all the way home. He approached her and asked her for a kiss and insisted when she told him no.
Thankfully, he left at that point.
However, it rocked me to my core, especially as I was 100 miles away and could do nothing. Further, to be honest, my wife did almost everything wrong in this situation.
She had her headphones in, she walked by campus and student housing, she knew the man was following her and she basically tried to ignore him in hopes he would go away, she let him approach her within a few feet, she wasn't aggressive. It's truly sad that a woman has to be vigilant - but it's a sad reality that it is a necessity.
The other thing that bugged me is that I had had a discussion with my wife on how she needed to act in such a situation and how she needed to be aware when she was walking and how to deal with this kind of thing and she ignored my advice. She's since done a turn-around and says she'll do things differently.
She did call the cops and file a report, but only after she called me and I told her that she needed to do that. So yeah, almost everything she could have done wrong, she did. So I'm just a tad freaked out.
I bought her mace yesterday for walking around with and a .357 magnum for home defense (and we're getting training on it as well). So I feel a bit better now.
We also walked the same route today (I'm in Rolla) and I really, really, really hoped to see the guy. I wasn't going to beat him up.
I was just going to follow him very closely all the way back to his house and ask him for kisses. I'm a big guy and it would have been a lot of fun to *%&$ with him. Unfortunately, he was a no-show.
