On the other hand those are probably the most sensible reasons for going into the military.

"Don't thank me, I was in it for the paycheck"?

"Don't thank me, I was only in it because I like shooting guns and kicking in doors"?

Almost every person I've ever met in the military (and I live in a navy town, so that's a lot of people) was in it for one of those two reasons, which is why I no longer bother thanking people for their service.

And yet, assuming they got deployed, they actually risked their lives in service of the country. Regardless of the motivation, the act is still no less brave.

In that particular context it does, at least to me. So far, I've been going with the polite head nod and then rapidly change the subject.

Say you're welcome but in kind of a bro salesy, ribbing way. But don't lay it on toooo thick. Be a hint blaise. Then say whatever you feel about any topic.

If I saw that, I'd think that dude was cool.

I just always thought it was weird that people thank soldiers for their service since the average citizen rarely has any direct tangible benefit from the military. It seems it would be better for them to thank the construction worker that built the roads they drive on everyday or the farmer that grew the food they eat since they have a daily, direct benefit from their labor.

If anyone should be thanking the military, it should be the government since most of the time we fight to advance and preserve their interests.

That'd end up pretty much thanking everyone, and that'd be pretty exhausting on a daily basis ^^.

Why not.... ask... anyway?

No need for a rush.
She's doing her thesis somewhere in the surrounding buildings around my work place, and drops often enough in to get a coffee or to use some of the facilities in our canteen.
And she said she'll go from next week on to the Salsa lessons.
So I'll most likely get some more opportunities. Unless someone else is faster this weekend, but hey...that might not only apply to her ^^.
(I think though that the chemistry and the chances are best with her, but she's not the only interesting one at the moment)

Consider that it is not useful in the sailor-townie relationship to get into the whole patriotism and personal beliefs thing. No one really wants to hear it, and no one really wants to talk about it. It is a lot easier to say "pay's good" and move on to the more important question "do you have a sister?"

Hey, if they want to dodge the awkwardness by saying "pay's good", I'm happy to help them by not making it awkward in the first place with weird thank you's.

Gratitude isn't awkward, it's welcomed, even if the recipient responds in a deprecating manner. I try to find something to express gratitude about in every person I meet. I'm sure they are fine without it though. As I said, unless there has been a substantial change in the sailor-townie relationship since my day their only real interest in you is whether you have a sister.

I don't understand. Is the end goal to have the most comfortable, safest moment to ask her or to get her to say yes if you ask? These things are mutually exclusive.

True and all, but also true is that the strength of our military really does seem to keep the peace and the willingness of our soldiers et al to completely surrender their freedom and accept forfeiture of their lives to be a part of that is pretty generous. Even if it's for selfish reasons.

As it should be :cowboy:

You should still just ask. You never know!

Sure, it's brave (assuming they actually saw active service - I realize now I write this, that you mean the same, I think, by "deployed"). But is it sensible?

o_O they aren't. (?)
I mean, why would I ask her out for a time when she is busy, when I can do it instead just a bit later when she might not be busy?

Yeah, yeah, okay, if possible I'll try tomorrow for Sunday afternoon.

Bruh. I'm about to change your life.

You're about to change lives alright, by making them way worse. That link goes to a site that throws all kinds of security warnings in my browser.
ublock thought it was cool, and ublock blocks mad numbers of sites. :dunno: IDL'd it onto my mac a while back had no problems. DL'd it onto this windows computer today to check and it opened fine, no sign of mischief.

I hate my Human Anatomy course. I tried to give it a fair shot. I tried to convince myself that since I wanted to do it, I should look for the good in it. But it is ungodly boring, involves memorizing a bunch of terms, taking a test or quiz and moving onto the next batch. I don't feel intellectually challenged at all. I resent every ounce of effort spent on the class, because I could be doing something for AP Lang or AP Calc BC or AP Physics 2 which are all classes I need to work on. I hate taking this attitude towards a class, because learning to me is something that should be fun.

Seems you need to motivate yourself.
Just imagine that at the end of the semester, you can ask some of your fellow students if they want to study human anatomy with you ^^.

yeah, sorry, couldn't let that one go

Bruh. I'm about to change your life.

Maybe, maybe not :P.
First gonna see if it's possible today, else just next week.
And hey, I'll go on 2 big parties on Saturday, something should work out :D.

Holy sheet, Batman. Visas are expensive as hell.
