Random Rants LXXXIX: I HATE MOVING!

I wish they would go after the unnecessary plastic packaging instead. I see stuff in clamshell packaging (that also cuts up your fingers) that could easily just be a cardboard box instead.

But if they didn't wrap everything in tons of plastic, it might be slightly easier to shoplift, and that might make wealthy supermarket owners.... (*gasp*).... slightly less money. We can't be having that, can we? Gotta protect those corporate profits at all costs.

And thus the corporations push off the blame on "individual choices" for environmental destruction!

One thing I HATE about Civ6

You're sitting there and think "I'm going to press F6 to see the tech tree" and.. BOOM right away you realize that you've made a horrible mistake. Right away the game starts loading some save from 2018 when you were playing as Russia.

WHAT

Who designed this, the American government? Chipmunks?

One of the first things i do when install a game is go in and check what the quicksave and quickload keys are. I try to reassign them to F10 and F11 because thats what I always use.

One thing I never do is use key shortcuts. I don't know why. I'm a nongenarian in a twenty-something's body.

I rarely use it which is why i put it out of the way.

I don't think I've ever hit Quick Load or Quick Save intentionally.
Whenever I play an RPG, my most-used key is F5 to quicksave.....
Which turned into a massive problem for me because Witcher1 didn't have a specific 'quicksave' so it just created a new save, and because of poor optimization the save files late game would easily be a gig in size.

Oblivion had glitchy autosaves. I had to disable autosave system entirely to prevent crashing.

I remember Fallout: New Vegas (possibly other games with the same engine) had a hilarious glitch where if you quicksaved, killed an NPC in a way that they gibbed (I think theres a console command for this), and then quickloaded, they would still be gibbed even though they were alive.

It now seems very likely that my father's Leukemia has returned. He is almost 82 years old and had been in remission since his last round of chemotherapy almost 9 years ago. A CT Scan of some lumps in my dad's abdomen seem to be consistent with the doctors' theory that they are extremely swollen lymph nodes. (They are now doing another CT scan of his right ankle, which has swollen up to double its normal size.) That could have multiple causes, but cancer is the most likely. We're going to need to go to an oncologist for a biopsy.
Very sad to hear. :(

I remember the "crying indian" commercial where the large corporations, soda-bottlers in particular, started a big push to shift the blame for environmental pollution onto the consumers instead of themselves and thus shift the burden to fix the problem with mostly placebo "recycling" theater onto the consumers as well. What a scam.

That said, I do still try to opt out of plastic straws as much as possible. My town recently voted to ban plastic shopping/grocery bags too. I voted for the ban, despite having some misgivings initially. It turns out that its really not a big deal, you just get paper bags instead and its fine.

IME, the paper bags are significantly weaker and more inconvenient than the plastic bags. And you can't really use them for trash, which I do with plastic bags.

I really struggle to view hand-shaking as an intimate touch, but this may be my internal bias and aversion. It seems like a fairly routine/rudimentary physical touch that is simply coded as "the social norm." Intent behind the touch, surprisingly, actually matters, as does cultural tradition. Since we're in a culture where you shake hands with even those you despise, even an intended-warmly handshake probably doesn't register as such unless the person offering it is highly touch-averse.

That's what I did this time, actually. I would've made it at home but all the stuff I have on-hand is the exact same as what I used before. My usual go-to is a Kraft single, white Wonder bread, and mayo as the replacement for butter.

The one from the restaurant had real cheddar, in-house baked bread, and canola oil. The chicken was the same chicken they use for their pulled chicken rice bowl, which I've had a couple times since leaving the hospital without any particular problem.

Maybe the oil. :dunno: The only fatty thing I've had since the hospital is mayonnaise for the tuna salad I've been making, and I reduced how much I use by 75% to be on the safe side.
Maybe that is the problem. ;)

Cheddar, swiss, muenster, jack are all excellent options if you can handle them.
Any other bread is better than wonder bread.
I grill mine in olive oil. My wife thinks that is strange because olive oil has a strong odor, but I can't smell any more, so it doesn't bother me. I cook eggs in it too.

Another option is to toast your bread, add the cheese, and then microwave it for 15 seconds or so to melt the cheese. No oil needed. Cooked asparagus is also nice between the slices of cheese.

The ideal grilled cheese uses a nice whole wheat or multi grain bread, Swiss cheese and one of the following: tomato slices, asparagus or artichoke hearts. :)

Oh I would remiss not mention that bacon is also a nice choice if you eat meat. Add it along with the veggies.

That sounds gross. Pass.

I've had grilled cheese sandwiches sans butter (well margarine). They're a little dry though.

So Hero Forge now lets you paint your miniatures on their website, so you get them in full color.

ARGH why couldn't they launch this a month ago, before I bought a bunch of little figures, all my painting supplies, and magnifying glasses???

Kinda surprised you've never seen me mention that before, this is hardly the first time I've mentioned it.
Somehow it escaped my notice, possibly helped by the fact that I don't go around actively classifying forum members according to their autism or lack of it.
It's CFC - everyone here is borderline spectrum at minimum.
It's a weirdo place, we have men, women, people who don't play civ3, people with jobs, I'm sort of used to oddities by now.

After 20 years, you all seem pretty normal to me. :D

I believe these types of communities attract a very niche group of people, for the most part. A small handful of people here are "normal." The outside world doesn't reflect this forum at all.
