I really hope you haven't been waiting for winter to come around to use that line.

My stepmother emailed me that link last spring, so, yeah!

Things will look up, Sam. Pats haven't lost to the Aints, yet; English isn't easiest language to learn. There's always the next game and, frankly, I didn't have my first girlfriend until I was fifteen. I had, like, one a year -- maybe -- and I'm 45 and never been married. Woo-hoo!
There's a difference between learning English and learning how to analyze symbols and figurateive stuff. Namely that I've always spoken English, but have never really understood why the hell the blue curtains symbolize sadness or stuff like that.

Because literature is fundamentally about more than telling a pretty story.

That's sort of what happened to me in late Middle School. I used to be able to finish books in a day or two in Middle School, then somehow in High School it just... didn't happen. Well, except for The Catcher in the Rye, finished that in a day.
My personal qualm is not so much about having to analyze symbols and figurative language and so on, it's that I felt that that was being focused on way too much at the expense of an interesting story. I want a story that interests me first, then the symbols and figurative language will become interesting and relevant to me.
Maybe I'm just being an uneducated slob.
Nah, I just have ridiculously high standards for what I consider good and worthy.
I guess I could rant about my standards another time.
What the hell is this? The literary criticism thread?! Can we get some legitimate rants in here, please?![]()
