A 9-year-old child is having the mother of all tantrums, threatening to hurt herself, possibly in the throes of a serious mental-health crisis. Is she autistic? Schizophrenic? Is she being abused? In the immediacy of the moment, there's no way to know. So of course the thing to do is to send people who are trained and equipped to use force - issue threats, inflict pain, and ultimately kill - to force compliance. That sounds smart. No way that could go wrong.

NBC News, Feb 1, 2021 - "Three officers suspended after police pepper spray 9-year-old girl in Rochester, N.Y."

There's a very telling quote from the Rochester Police Union president:

"I'm not saying there are not better ways to do things," Mazzeo told the [Rochester Democrat & Chronicle newspaper]. "But let's be realistic about what we're facing. ... It's not TV, it's not Hollywood. We don't have a simple (situation), where we can put out our hands and have somebody be instantly handcuffed and comply."

Of course he's absolutely right. It isn't tv or Hollywood. I can think of no circumstance under which any human being can justify using pepper-spray on a handcuffed* 9-year-old girl; meanwhile, the spokesperson for all Rochester police officers can't imagine anything else. But hey, at least he concedes that a better way might exist, even if he doesn't know what it is.


* Just to underline this: She was already handcuffed and in the back seat of the police car when they used pepper-spray. She was refusing to pull her feet inside the car so the officer could close the door. I think she was asking to talk to her father.

To sum, Rochester, NY police can basically be thwarted by nine-year old girls that have, at best, a fifth of the body mass of two fully-grown trained police officers.

The police chief there sounds like an idiot defending these cops.

I've been treated worse by moderators, and I didn't even get to scream and kick.

I see no threats, inflicting pain or killing in the video. Nor forcing compliance.

My GF fell on Monday so badly from her bike, that apparently today her butt is purple, she has pain in the shoulders and also pain while taking a deep breath.
Yet she refuses to call her GP. But told me to call the ambulance in case she doesn't respond to me around noon.
Oh man .

They tend to assume that people who tested positive are supposed to self-isolate and will always abide by the honor system or local regulations.

Of course there are plenty who don't, or who are lax about taking the symptoms seriously. The school situation in this province has been a yo-yo situation, with the kids in one week, someone tests positive, then the whole class has to isolate for 14 days, and some have a hell of a time doing this because they live in a large household, or the place where they live is too small, or the family dynamics don't match the government's myopic assumptions that everyone lives in a nuclear family.

This pandemic, if it had happened during my school years, would have been disastrous for me in some subjects, but I'd have actually done better in others. I would either have had to move in with my mother (due to living with my grandparents) to keep going to school, or I would have had to home-school and be my own teacher for some of the subjects (since we had no personal computers in the '70s).

The government (and a lot of its supporters) still can't wrap their minds around the fact that some kids' caregivers/guardians are their grandparents, so it's impossible to stay away from them.

That's even assuming you're aware you have Covid, which you very well might not be aware of if you have a case with mild or no symptoms.

my "usb" stick in the tablet , one of those small thin stuff you can also use in the phones was already full and ı would replace it . On February 1st , when ı started the tablet and it shows stuff ı downloaded previously and is still in the downloads section and so on . With an extra that says there is an error . And the scan for it begins . Yesterday ı plugged a new one in ... Today's its name as seen on the screen has changed , possibly into Chinese characters , producers and the like of the USB thing . Apart from the utter boredom of WW lll not having started yet , the only change is the reports some British person has arrived in town , has been rejected an audience as it were . ı will not take back anything , wish the worst in life to her (because the consensus was once more she would , like even if ı can't even count the number of people the town would think , you know ...) lf something happens and am not around , my only promise is that a time will come and ı will be back ... And everybody will hate that we will be speaking in the language they will inevitably understand . Oh , it is brilliant , you know , if people are angry , like for reasons they are not even told , let's make them more angry and this should help gloriously .

10 years ago, I came to the Phils with a 44 inch waist. Following a long battle, I got down to 40 inches.

Alas, I notice my now-ratty walking shorts are getting tight around the waist. So the 40-inchers are being relegated to my bottom drawer and out come the 42- and even 44-inch waisters. Que sera sera.
