I've come to the conclusion that my friends can't be bothered being subtle about avoiding me anymore.

I have a particularly annoying and ultimately expensive problem on my hands.

I'm two months away from completing a house that I'm building. Adjacent is a small block of land that's just been vacant. We put up a demantible there to house some of the builders and have also been leaving a lot of building waste there (which of course was to have been removed).

Anyway, my brother reports that one day this French lady storms in out of the blue, going crazy over the demantible and the rubbish...fair enough, we'll clean it right away.

But then, all hell broke loose. It turns out that there was some confusion when the surveying was done and there is a strip maybe 5 by 1 meters that is actually on her land. 4m was for the carport (luckily not yet built) and 1m has been built on.

By all accounts she is (and since I've never met her and since we did build on her land, I'll be generous) "forthright".

There are a few options, buy her out, knock down what's been built and do some redesigning, all of which are time consuming or expensive.

The only upside is now I have to go over to Indonesia in a fortnight and try to mediate and get a good result. I have some basic French and I'm not too bad at talking things like this out.

It's just a bummer because we are soooo close and I was so excited. This has taken the wind out of my sails a bit.

I am sorry to hear that mate. However, I fully expect you will be able to successfully negotiate your way to a positive outcome.

I assume she intends to build on her lot - maybe offer to trade the strip of land for a shed or some small structure you could have her crew build for her on her lot?

You have to be one rank higher than the person you're giving a territory to in order to keep holding it. Can't have a count with a liege who is also a count.

Oh dear. Good luck with negotiating with an irate French woman. They are truly ferocious.

Basic French is no good, I think. Apart from smiling a lot and saying "bonjour", anything else is likely to insult her more (if she's feeling insulted). It might be best to do any negotiating formally through legal channels, would be my guess. Yet more expense.

Still, you might be lucky.

40 is quite low, though I'm not sure if there's any standard number, I personally try to aim around 60 or more. The higher the percentage the faster it will happen I think. If you can get it to around 300 it tends to happen almost instantaneously.

If you bribe a few people, usually you can up the percentage by quite a bit, you just need the extra cash lying around to do it.
