Because after doing the math, it comes out cheaper than living at home with a car/car insurance or in an off campus apartment less than four miles from campus. We don't have much in the way of student slum housing so you can't really get cost savings from moving off campus unless you go far enough away it becomes cheap. Unfortunately, then you need to put up with the relatively poor quality of public transit in St. Paul or get a car-completely negating the cost savings!
I can't say I'm thrilled about living in dorms again, but it is nice living on campus.
what the hell? there are a bunch of dorms at uva which are further away than a lot of the off-grounds housing
