Badge didn't come attached though so I need to do it myself.

This is the only picture I have of my Russian one. I also have an East German one.

I got my ushanka. It makes me look like a filthy Russian Soviet Communist. :) I'm going to wear it once it snows. Its nice and soft and silky. And
quite warm.

I want one :( Like, an authentic just-killed-a-beaver Ushanka. Prefferably with a customized badge :)

Rave: Katiusha is soooo beautiful :)

I'm currently enjoying that great feeling of relief I tend to get when I submit an assignment that I'm reasonabley happy with.

Also I disovered that most Polish beer is really nice. Tyskie and Okocim (so glad I don't have to attempt to pronounce them) are really good, and Karpackie is the best cheap beer around at the moment. Polish nationalists, don't let this endorsement to get to your head!

Assignments are drawing to a close.

Totally. Were the Russians cool with you wearing that around? Greeted as a comrade?

It was summer so it was in the 50s-60s out, so I didn't wear it. One night it did get rather cold, though, probably around 40. That's Fahrenheit of course. And the only time I heard any mention of communists, apart from the tour of the Lenin Mausoleum and Kremlin wall graves, was when I was accosted by this drunken guy while buying a subway ticket who either thought I was a Bolshevik or he was one himself.

By and large the Russians were stern looking people, but very friendly, warm, and helpful if you bothered to talk to them, and sometimes even if you didn't. Probably a lot more likely to offer or ask if you need help than an American city-dweller would. From reading/talking to people from the Eastern Bloc, that's rather typical of the older generations, but not really the younger ones, who grew up after socialism. Likewise, older generations regard those younger ones as having no morals, no responsibility, and no understanding of brotherhood or community relations.

Pfft, nostalgia, kids are the same as always, crappy.

And hey, I have one of those hats, just more the canadian redneck type. Plus it's fake fur on top of a normal hat pretty much. Still nice warm and comfy in winter.

Etymology is a wonderful thing. I just realized that the words "tenor" and "detainee" are related!! :D How cool is that?

I was thinking about starting a thread about it, but I doubt many people would be interested in it.
