Public holiday.
Women and sane men bank it as a free holiday and care like they would about Columbus Day (were they American).

Scandinavians don't do this?
Norwegians, Swedes and Danes celebrate Christ's Ascension Day as a Holiday, so yes, us Scandinavians 'do it'. :)

No idea why your comment warranted a separate thread that is now locked, but there's your answer.

I mean, you'd probably fall foul of public drinking laws first.

That's what I meant by the last point

Mind you public drinking laws here are flexible, I am for instance a part of a tradition that involves drinking in public as we walk to a soccer stadium. We were "doing it wrong" for a while so the cops stopped us and told us to be more discreet. Turns out all you need is a brown paper bag

Of course this is nothing compared to the referenced "Men's day". Our tradition is not nearly as festive

I finally find the answer for ‘why the hell do USians drink their alcohol from brown paper containers?’ - thanks!

Yeah, it's basically like that The Wire episode

We were walking decked out in our club colours, including jerseys and scarves, beers in hand. Eventually we passed two cops on bikes who were on the other side of the street. One of them yelled across the street: "Is that a beer?".. then there was a pause and then my friend said back: "Yes, Kronenbourg 1664, France's finest". At first I was thinking "Well at least somebody said something, but I don't know if that was the right thing to say"

And the other cop says: "Finish up those beers and next time be more discreet"

Wow okay, my friend read the situation perfectly I guess. So we downed our beers, threw out the cans in a nearby garbage bin, and from then on always brown bagged our beers. And now the cops just ignore us and I guess focus on stuff that's more important to them. And they can because we aren't rubbing it in their faces by openly breaking the law

Spoiler :

Oh, i meant the father's day nonsense.

I'm not sure either. We have (tried to) talk about this on fiftychat at some length, and my general impression is that...
a) my reckless actions were in no way crucial and but rather constituted the proverbial last straw
b) this is largely about Ewan McGregor's speech on Scotland and fresh air as a lackluster remedy

Well, now I have to watch The Wire.

Okay CFC, I need your collective brainpower to help solve a little problem I'm having. The office I work in has AC, but now that things are warming up, the AC doesn't seem to be adequate to cool my office. I've talked to maintenance and they assure me the AC is working fine, it just doesn't seem to be powerful enough to cool my work space. So I have decided to buy a portable AC unit to help cool my office. Here's where the problem comes in: Portable AC units need to be vented just like any other AC unit and my office is in the interior of the building with no windows or any other immediate access to the outside. I also can't drill a hole through the wall to vent the AC either.

So I got the idea to build something to capture the exhaust from the portable AC unit. I've never done anything like this before so I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on how I should go about this. Or, if you have any other solutions to my AC venting problem, I'm all ears.

I'm not sure if capturing the heat like that is possible. You'll need to dispose of the heat coming out or I suspect you'll get nowhere. Perhaps a good fan is a better solution for your office.

If it helps your heat woes, it snowed here this morning.. :undecide:

Buy a fan.

Honestly, I've never understood this obsession with air conditioners. The only place I ever found it useful was either in the mall or in a car on a really hot day. A few years ago we had an insanely hot September, and I'd just moved from a basement suite with a south-east exposure to one with a south-west exposure. I couldn't afford a fan at that time, so I spent most of September at the mall - the nearest public place with air conditioning, where nobody would mind if I just sat there, reading a book while sipping a cool fruit drink.

I have a fan. It doesn't work. My office is hovering around 80 and 85 F (or 26 to 29 C for you non-Americans out there) depending on the time of day. I looked into evaporative air coolers, but apparently you need a very dry climate (average humidity of less than 40%) for them to be effective and the air in our building is usually somewhere around 50% humidity on average.

There has to be a solution in all this somewhere. I know we can figure this out guys.

Honestly, I've never understood this obsession with air conditioners.

For me, it's that I need to feel cold in order to feel comfortable and a fan just doesn't do that for me well enough.

An air conditioner creates heat in the process of relocating heat from one place to another. If you can't vent it, then you can't relocate the heat, which is now increased, to a place where it doesn't bother you. Lost cause.

Well that's why I was wondering if I could build some kind of trap for the heat as a place for it to be relocated. I would only need it to work for 8 hours a day.

Short answer, no. The only thing you might try is to attach the output hose from the portable unit straight to an air return vent which is extracting air from your office, if you have one.

Well, now I have to watch The Wire.

You most definitely should! It's one of those shows you need to focus on though and can't really watch passively, the way some people watch South Park or even Breaking Bad. I watched the whole series intently and ended up watching the 1st season three times. Each time I watched it, I got something new out of it. Mind you I'm an immigrant who often doesn't pick up ebonics very well.. Either way, definitely worth watching, and each season has something intriguing to offer.

100% sure that isn't going to work. Your only solution is to buy a fan or work from home on especially rough days.

I have a similar issue on some days here. Due to funding issues the guys who are in charge of campus-wide AC (or heating) here only turn all the ACs on all at the same time, on a specific day. Even if the weather doesn't cooperate, which it lately hasn't. So on some days in the spring (and/or in the fall when the heating turns on too early) my office warms up beyond 27C. Which are not so good working conditions. On days like that I leave, jump on a bus, and work the rest of the day from home. Since my office is in the middle of a building, and has no window to the outside (I can see the outside, but via 2 windows), an independent AC solution is not going to work unless I run some sort of a tube from my office to the outside world, which isn't even logisticaly possible, but even if it were, I doubt facilities management would let me do it. So when it gets over 27C I tell my boss and go home

Look up your employee manual's (or state law) temperature guidelines. Some will not have it, but some places will say what "valid" working temperatures are. Your place might or might not have something like that. My work.. I don't even know. There is probably something like that, but I can't be bothered to look it up, I just leave when it gets so warm I can't think and work effectively (27C or above, if it's under that I can work with a fan on and it's fine enough)

Anther alternative I suppose is to get one of the maintenance guys to check out the ducts connecting the AC to your office. Maybe one of them isn't letting in as much air as it could

Your only solution is likely going to be "buy a fan"

Noticed that it's a holiday today in the U.S. and that Better Call Saul won't be airing. That sucks but it brings me to my question: Is Memorial day kind of like our Canadian Remembrance Day on November 11th? I thought you guys have a day like that in November too but maybe I'm wrong

Most def.

First I'll have to finish watching The Shield.

And no, I don't always get the ebonics either. I do get discrimination in general, though.

Watching The Wire without subs is... interesting.

Is it? Probably, as I wouldn't have to unconsciously check them and wince at the occasional mistake.

Did they read børk børk børk?

There is the odd grammatical imperfection yes.
