Those look like what we call kettle chips.

Kettle chips are superior, yet I seldom get them. Their degree of superiority does not match the degree of their higher price, which would cut into my chip consumption.

@Traitorfish...I am so widely considered a barbarian that what I call my chips will neither make me nor break me.

Question for US residents:

You walk into a convenience store. What are the standard flavours of Lays potato chips that are always available? Exclude limited edition and regional varieties.

Regular, Wavy, Sour Cream/Onion, Salt/Vinegar, BBQ. Those will be the core.

Probably a regional thing, because cheddar is unusual for me to find.

@shadowplay stereotype less, ketchup chips sound gross as hell and I've never even heard of them let alone seen them

Midwest and salt/vinegar is my absolute favorite by a mile

Good chips are deliciously potato flavoured. Much more than that ruins it and reduces is to just a conveyor of some generic BBQ taste or something.

The design criteria for the potato chip was to shovel as much grease and salt into your face as possible using as little actual food as possible. They have never been "potato flavored."

Hmm, again, it would seem that my personal philosophy on the science of chipsery, differs greatly from it's global audience.

I may not be a global audience, but I've eaten an astronomical amount of chips and I am somewhat rounded.

And, let me remind myself, you're not actually talking about actual chips here, are you?

But crisps.

Because, you know, it's very confusing.

No it isn't. Brits are just easily confused about certain things due to defects in their use of English. Let me help you out...

Do you ever hear anyone say "fish and potato chips"? No. No one ever refers to French fries as potato chips, even when they are served with fish. That's "fish and chips." Just chips, not potato chips. Potato chips come in a bag and are either eaten with dip or, for the lazy, have the dip flavor included in the grease and salt that actually constitutes what a potato chip is all about.

They don't at the moment in general say potato chips, that's true.

But I don't think the day is far off when they will.

We already have sweet potato chips available, so sooner or later people will have to start talking about potato chips to distinguish the two.

You're quite right that I get easily confused.

But that's mainly because people use English in non-standard ways. Or keep using it in ways that went out of fashion 250 years ago.

Probably deliberately, if you ask me.

Perhaps you should start using "sweet potato fries" like we do in the modern world...where they have been available for a long time.

Ah.

Now you're talking gobbledygook. When you now say "fries" you do mean "chips" don't you?

Because otherwise that way madness lies.

Fries are the things that if served with fried fish would be called chips. Even when served with some other fried sea creature they are called chips, especially at a 'fish and chips' place, where the menu will likely include 'shrimp and chips' and 'clam strips and chips' and other desirable items...and for diversity might include a 'burger and fries.'
