Random Thoughts 2: Arbitrary Speculations

It fell because of a sudden change in perceptions but, above all, because there
were overwhelming numbers who were committed to change and prepared to make it
happen.
Actually, it fell because of David Hasselhoff, do you even know what you're talking about? ;)

Especially when people are dying and decide to stop the bloood-letting quickly,
instead of one drop at a time.
That's a good example of a situation where quick change is preferable!

Five-year plan by horoscope. :)
That would be interesting to watch from afar.

I'm still alive after >35 years of living with a feminist lawyer named Kit.
That's 9 times longer than Hasselhoff's golden era lasted. :P

I'm not putting up an act, I meant every word I said in my last post.

You do, but it is still an act

these are not your original thoughts, and you are making a show (or: an act)

You're trying to make some dumb ass confrontation rubbish, but it's just regurtitaning ancient talking points

I think it's more jumping a whale at this point.

Yes, it's a wild idea that Ryika, an in-their-20s man, a teenage girl, an in-their-20s woman, who frequently self-admits to taking on different personas and perspectives for a laugh, may not be presenting themselves as totally genuine on a hotly contested issue. Truly a stretch of the imagination.

Well the fact this this is even considered a hotly contested issue on here is my point entirely. In most places the suggestion that tearing down civilisation, so that we can attempt to create a communist utopia in its place, might not be the best idea ever is about as hotly contested as the suggestion that it's not a great idea to stick knitting needles up your nose. Yet here it's "dumb ass confrontation rubbish".

As for challenging the messenger rather than the message, I've personally never had much problem discerning when Ryika is being sarcastic and when she's being genuine. I don't think she's quite the deceptive troll you're imagining.

The reverse (I guess it's reverse?) transphobia shown in this post is pretty grotesque. I do not think it's reasonable for you to make fun of the fact that I had to experiment for a few year before coming to the conclusion that I am indeed just a normal female (or a"foul-mouthed, disgusting slut" as I was called just a few days ago :)), and not a trans individual.

But anyway, "hotly contested issue"? Is that really what you'd describe the discussion about whether we should have a hard-cut socialist revolution as? The only reason it's even slightly controversial here is because there is quite a wing of far-left extremists on this board who really love to go on about that topic.

A hardcore socialist revolution sounds great in theory, but when 90% of the population has embraced the culture of cutthroat capitalism, it won't work. The culture has to change for people to care about being citizens in a socialist country as opposed to being selfish individuals.

Also, you know, the 99% probability that some authoritarian jackass will seize and abuse the power vacuum. But that's secondary to the fact that it won't work in the first place.

Moderator Action: I think that we're past random thoughts by now. Feel free to start a different thread about this, but please wind up the conversation in this thread. Thank you.

Random Thought: PDMA= Puns Do Make Awesomeness:smoke:
it doesn't get much more random than that.....

I thought discussing PDMA was frowned upon ;)
Hmm, hope this doesn't get me in trouble.

This isn't about the specific conversation being had (re: capitalism vs socialism) so hopefully this still complies with the mod decree...

I mean, you are essentially Ryika-lite. That's not surprising. You don't participate in threads unless there's someone you can disagree with. Both of you predicate your participation in discussions on whether or not you can oppose someone in it, bonus points if your opposing perspective is controversial or otherwise antagonistic. You both consider it a good day if what you say makes people upset. You're not like them entirely, but the incentive in participation is fairly similar. At least in OT.

The side effect of regularly posting on a forum is that eventually you get pegged even if you "shake things up" to keep it interesting. Lexicus is your neighbourhood far-left radical (who isn't even a radical when it comes down to it), Traitorfish is your resident "can make anarchy seem like a good idea if you're not paying attention" guy, Hobbs is your neighbourhood Rocket Man (the good one!), Owen is your friendly "I will beat you down with academia" chap, etc. I'm just a half-baked buffoon. We've all got our expectations and reputations.

Lohrenswald's entire point was that Ryika frequently goes to bat for a viewpoint, trying their hardest to seem genuine about it, but changes their tune from one thread to another if the prevailing thought is different. Every crafted argument isn't Ryika, it's just some position they've decided to adopt because it means they get to fight with someone. It's an act, a performance, and rarely in these threads will you ever have a conversation with who Ryika actually is as a person. You'll just be debating some random issue with a perspective they've arbitrarily taken on. Which is fine, I guess a Devil's Advocate can be useful sometimes, but it can get grating for others after a while who've figured it out and don't really take what you're saying at face value anymore.

Challenging the messenger rather than the message becomes a given when it's clear that the messenger is just messing around. Taking them seriously and consistently treating them as genuine provides the fuel necessary to keep the charade going. But when you reject the foundation of where they're coming from, you get resistance like the below or some other comment that heads into trolling/flaming territory. They go for the nuclear option to try and scorched earth the place because if they can't get a rise out of you the normal way, they'll do it another. If a carefully crafted argument can't do it, a hysterical claim about you can (sometimes).

I haven't done the devil's advocate schtick for at least a year now, and when I did, I always did so by creating my own threads. More importantly, I have never done so on political issues at all, and only ever focused on social issues; those that I thought have an angle that is usually not explored, such as that discussion that explored whether finding inherent genetic differences that could translate into IQ-differences are really so scary that we must deny even the theoretical possibility, by making "your race" the worst-performing one in a hypothetical. Or that one where I took a pro-catcalling stance.

You are right that I usually enter ongoing political discussions only if I disagree with something somebody has said, but I don't see how that's a.) a bad thing and - after all, we're here to discuss issues, if I wanted people to agree with me unconditionally, I would go to infowars.com, because as we all know those people really agree with me on everything - b.) translates into "therefor, she's just pretending to hold that position!". Overall, your post is wholly inaccurate, and it seems to me that you've rather created a villain in your head instead of describing a genuine version of what I do and who I am.

Anyway, back to topic:

I bought a proper Egg Slicer last week, and it's incredible how much that has improved my enjoyment of bread with eggs on it. Having equal-sized slices of egg is so much better than the hastily cut eggs that I normally ate. Incredible how such a small change can bring so much enjoyment.

Wobbly, half-cooked eggs eaten directly with a spoon still taste best though.

I just post whatever pops into my head with no concern for the consequences, 'cause when there are consequences i've usually lost interest and moved on to something else. I have a pitifully short attent- hey look! a squirrel!

We sometimes have "googs and soldiers" for dinner when we are too tired to make
proper food.

I just spent half-an-hour petting the cat that belongs to someone at the other end of our (dead-end) road. Poor thing's in heat, and as far as I know there are no other cats that are allowed to roam around here. No stray cats either. :/

A cat in heat allowed you to pet it for half an hour? :dubious:

That must be an extraordinary cat, to stay still for that long. None of my female cats in that condition would stay still for half a minute.

Are you sure it was in heat?
