Random Thoughts 2: Arbitrary Speculations

Alas, poor lolrus.

You'd best make sure to do most of your posting in the non-serial threads. Every time they get archived, we lose whatever post count we gained (which I think is extremely unfair).

Oh wow. I didn't know that. Most of my posts in the OT forums are in serial threads. This will delay my #1 status for quite a while.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think postcount doesn't decrease after archival anymore after the xenforo migration

The current Raves thread will soon be archived (I'm composing the new OP now), so we shall see.

It hasn't done in nearly a year, no. I was wondering if anyone had noticed.

It looks like the Raves thread has been archived and my post count has remained the same. Crisis averted. :whew:

Just a bit of Salt!
Not a bad choice, even if uncreative.
This is my 1000th post.

If my calculations are correct, at this rate I'll take over as the CFC member with the most posts around Nov. 23rd, 2236 :old:
You've got a long way to go, padawan.
Indeed.
The only person who acts more on this site than Ryika is you
Even if this were right, it would simply mean that I am the best qualified to speak about it.

It's too bad we don't get our other ones back from before, but at least this is a start.

Well, I noticed that my post count appeared to jump last winter, so it's entirely possible that it was retroactive, but this is probably not intended behaviour.

Can post count be traded in for imperial credits?

Why does post count matter to people? Genuine question, don't get it at all. It feels like taking pride in how many emails you've got in your inbox or other such similar things that nobody really cares about.

They aspire to be lords of Spammingrad.

Emails are things other people or companies or spammers send to you.

Posts on a forum are things you write.

I look at post count as one of the ways to measure how much I've had to say here, and since I started participating only relatively recently in the serial threads, most of those posts will still be viewable if one digs back far enough. My posts in the staff forum are no longer accessible to me, and I've permanently lost that post count.

There are forums where post count does matter, because higher post count means extra perks. The Star Trek forum I belong to has a batch of hidden forums, each of which is accessible only to members of a particular rank (post count = rank). For instance, Ensigns can't post in the Admirals' Lounge (and vice versa). I joined the Admiralty there last year, with a rank or two yet to go. At the rate I post, it'll take a few years since I'm not in the habit of spamming.

Another benefit of post count - it's a useful heuristic to determine whether or not it's worth while to engage someone. People who only spout garbage don't tend to hang around that long.

That's not actually accurate, as "garbage" is a relative term.

There are people here with high post counts with whom I either never engage, rarely engage, or have stopped engaging, for a variety of reasons (lack of mutual interest, negative interactions, they left the forum, etc.).

If someone has a low post count, it doesn't mean they post garbage (usually). It may mean they prefer to read instead of posting, or they don't have the time to spend here like the regulars do. It took me over 10 years to make 8000 posts... on a Star Trek forum. I spent a fair bit of time there reading, and when I posted, I tried to post thoughtful comments and not so much in the "Five-word story" threads that are good for fast post count but not a lot else.

Hence the word heuristic Valka. That implies a subjective self-analysis based on a mental shortcut.

You and I do not have the same heuristic, that doesn't make it any less valid or useful to me.
