Random Thoughts X: Impromptu Interpretations

Yeppers, smile back and be happy for sure! And pass it on :) Just be happy that another human being smiled your way, rather than thinking a woman is sexually interested.

Haha I feel a bit anxious now, that's probably one of the last reasons I can think of why someone would smile (at me).

Edit: I smile often though, so perhaps it was the other way around.:crazyeye:

The fact that the monastic name differs in stressed vowel would be enough to allow Kyriakos to be a civic name just fine (as it does). Similar with Christos, a more common name than Kyriakos, and Christos stressed at the "o" (only used for Christ).
Kyriake has nothing of the sort, so usually becomes something bubbly like "Kiki" (with a heta in the end, obviously).
But with Christos you also use an eta.
And real income isn't the same as nominal income.
*gasp!*

Do vampires show in a mirror that is reflected in another mirror?

If you throw seeds in front of a vampire, they have to stop and count every one. That’s partially, I heard, where the idea of “The Count” from the Muppets came from.

Good strategy until you get some Rain Man vampire that can count them all in a fraction of a second.

Do vampires show in a mirror that is reflected in another mirror?

Well, no? Any next reflection would be based on the first reflection. I have to suppose a vampire standing between two mirrors would make him the only person able to observe just with his/her eyes the infinite reflections from that position :)

(by "decent" I don't mean the best properties in the city, obviously; you will be lucky if you can see the sea from the balcony).
Then I guess my balcony would be extremely unlucky. It does face the ocean, but it's a two-day drive to get there.

A month ago, just the sight or smell of meat made me want to throw up.

This morning, I woke up with a desperate craving for cooked animal flesh. I ate my regular breakfast, but it just didn't satisfy. I don't know what to do (I haven't eaten meat in years)
There are fake meat products on the market now. I can't vouch for how they taste, since I haven't tried them.

Something weird happened yesterday. I was checking my FB notifications from my MLA's page where I left some comments, and up popped a message from someone I knew in the SCA, over 25 years ago. The message was dated 2017, and this is the first time I noticed it.

I'd have thought he'd have taken the hint when he phoned about 15 years ago, in a creepy-flirty way and I didn't call him back (basically, "hi, I'm divorced, I know you like me, call me").

Sorry, no. I'm glad he got divorced from that awful woman, but at the time we were both in the SCA I was in a relationship with someone else, and I haven't been looking for a new one.

Photobucket emailed me threatening to delete all my images if I didn't login in the next 60 days....you know, the images I already deleted years ago....

Is your account with them a free or premium one? They're insanely aggressive to get everyone on high-priced paid accounts.

They keep emailing me and telling me I'm over my allowed bandwidth and they want $$ NOW, and I keep telling them my annual subscription isn't due until the first week of June, and I'm grandfathered under one of the old plans (much less money for more space than the people who pay twice that amount get), plus third-party hosting.

It pays to get outraged with them, because back when they moved to the new way of charging people $400 for an account that included 3rd-party hosting, I kept trying to log in and delete as much as I could that I either didn't want or could easily replace with a different image hosting company, and snag the rest.

What greeted me was multiple incidents of a pop-up saying "these are the wonderful pictures you can see on our site"... and it was a screen full of pornographic images.

I copied that, and forwarded it to Photobucket, reminding them that this is NOT wonderful, I DON'T want to see it, and in fact, such images are in violation of Photobucket's Terms of Service/Use.

That was one of the factors in them agreeing to grandfather my account. And I have set up an image-hosting account elsewhere, that said it was happy to have accounts by "Photobucket refugees" (people were deleting whole albums at a time until Photobucket put a stop to that so you can only delete one image at a time).

A free one. I deleted all my images because of the dumb crap they pulled a few years ago trying to charge to hotlink your images.

The question is to find the half mark of α+β+γ. (ie (a+b+c)/2)

Such questions may exist, in some form, in the first part of some problem in an exam for highschool math awards. But I think it isn't fair, because the answer doesn't require thinking - if you haven't seen it before it will be far more difficult to come up with an answer, and if you have seen it before it will be solved in a few seconds.
(the answer is that b is the half mark, and to get this you just set something close to one of 2011-2007 as an x; I personally iirc used 2009 as x and then 2007 as y = x+2. Either way, they all become roots of squares, eg root of (x-1)^2)

It is similar to the issue of memorizing formulas - critical thinking tends to zero and most pupils don't even care they don't understand why the formula is true.

Before I left the US, I'd eat all kinds of fake meat, the more flavored, the better. Sausage, pepperoni, etc.., because the spices that were used in the meats works just as well in the fake meats. :yumyum:

A lot of people pulled their images and went elsewhere. The result is a lot of ruined images on various sites where the Photobucket ones used to be.

The problem isn't charging, per se. Free accounts were available and I used that until I got into the technical aspects of forums (the guy who ran the first Dune forum I belonged to promoted me to moderator and told all of us to make an account on the IF support forum, participate there, and learn how IF forums work; I was the only one who actually did that and it's what eventually got me promoted to the admin staff). I had a paid account there for years before they changed ownership and decided to gouge people $400/year to post our own images and host them on forums.

One of my computer-related hobbies used to be skinning InvisionFree forums, and I'd use all sorts of interesting backgrounds and icons instead of the default crap. Having a reliable image-hosting account was essential.

(I still giggle when I told the people on my Doctor Who forum to bear with me as the forum would go through some changes because I planned to skin it... one of the members said, "Alive? :( " ... "Yes, alive," I told her, and explained that it just meant a new look that would be based on the Fourth Doctor's TARDIS. I found some Whovian backgrounds, and the guy who ran the old smileygenerator.us forum I belonged to made a custom set of Tom Baker smileys for me; some of them ended up being used in place of icons).

So many old blogs and forums were ruined even when the images weren't outright deleted. They replaced them with a stupid speedometer for a while, and then started blurring them out.

Aaaarrgggh! You've brought memories of that awful time when imageshack betrayed me.

Watching The Jetsons as a child, I thought the buildings on stilts meant a cool space-age future.

Watching it as an adult, I wondered if the earth below was uninhabitable.

Watching it as a cynical adult, I’m pretty sure the studio was trying to cut production costs by hiring fewer background designers.
