You can declare war on England whenever you like, probably within a turn or two.

Ha! Like I'm going to wait two turns!

Today is a good day to die. :cooool:

Seems you will need another great prophet for the taoist shrine after you take the holy city for the 7th religion away from Victoria.. :)

Sirian drafted because it's a good way to pop an army out of thin air, provided you have the happiness to compensate it (especially for Spiritual civs - pop into Nationhood for a few turns, draft one unit out of each city, pop back out to something else again in 5 turns).

How many XP does a drafted soldier have? The same as a trained one from that city?

Victoria might have already built a shrine.. by this time, she hase gotten a few great people, right (I know she went into a golden age at somepoint..)

Shrines get destroyed when a city is captured, you have to rebuild them.

My gut feeling is that difficulty level will matter more in Civ4 than Civ3. There are a lot of ways you lose out if you can't be first to something (wonders as with civ3, but also religion). (My guess at the best start for religion would be to be spiritual and go for polytheism all out).

Or, you are Inca, mysticism + agriculture, aggressive + financial, +100% to archery UU, my favorite civ (and leader) for the current time.

Aggressive Civs are very nice, I'm having fun with the Mongols right now (no early religions, but plenty of late ones :satan:). Imagine all of the nice military improvements built by these guys, and add the bonus Combat I for footsoldiers thrown in on top?

^^Well, I ain't going to bed anytime soon :D ... I need to see how this turns out!

Are you still awake, ChrTh? Get some sleep, man. ;) Wars take time to play out. :hammer:

Then there is all of that imbedded journalist footage to sort through and edit.

Half what it would otherwise have. (If you have barracks -> 4XP, drafted from that city would be 2XP, which is what we had in most cases when I did that round of drafting.)

Hi,

Monarch is still plenty challenging for me in most games that I've tried recently. [...] Civ4's AI is simply better than Civ3's. :)

Agreed, although it's not only the improved AI, or that we don't know the game inside out yet, that makes it challening. It's also the change of many game mechanisms to the better (like no prebuilding wonders, the maintenance system etc.) that did the job of making even Monarch, where the AIs don't get that much of a bonus compared to some Civ 3 levels, a more fun and challenging experience. There are a lot of things done right this time inside Civ 4! :goodjob:

CARPE DIEM

"Let's roll!" :sniper:

First up, the artillery. (Always helps to have ACCURATE artillery.)

rb1-170.jpg

rb1-171.jpg

City defenses down to 24%.
We can sit around and wait for a turn, so we can get that down to 0%.
Or we can attack now. Here are the odds:

rb1-172.jpg

Check out the armor units maxed out on City Raider promotions. :cooool:
(Just don't let them get caught and ambushed in the open by counterattackers!)

ATTACK! Forward, you magnificent bastids. FORWARD! :D

rb1-173.jpg

Their best unit falls. Now for the second ranks. Here are the odds:

rb1-174.jpg

It only gets uglier for them from here.

rb1-175.jpg

There's nothing so sweet as the smell of victory in the morning.

Attack again! BLITZ! Again, I say! FORWARD!

rb1-176.jpg

This first battle of this war isn't even over yet and already I am feeling the surge of adrenalin.

 I'm salivating here!! I need more!! Can't wait for more war reports. I will be sad when you guys finish the game... I look forward to reading your reports every day at work (if I can't play the game at work, at least I can read about it!)

Note the vulnerability of a city positioned just across the border!
If you don't think culture matters in this game, think again.

Now for the dreaded Longbow vs Tank battles. :crazyeye:
The odds vs an unpromoted Tank, in a city with reduced but not eliminated defense rating:

rb1-177.jpg

The thing about Civ4 combat is this:
Your current strength rating -IS- your Strength rating!
A wounded tank down to 7 Str is weaker than a fully healed Maceman at 8 Str.
If you want to be successful at war in Civ4, you must grasp this element.

Capice? :cooool:

Rather than toy around with 28 to 11 odds, I use some of my promotions.

rb1-178.jpg

Now it's 28 to 9, and that's a lock. We WILL NOT lose. However, we may take damage.
If we take too much damage and attack again... :shakehead ...that would be choosing unwisely. :smoke:

rb1-179.jpg

We lose 3.1 units of strength in the fight. That's not enough to scare me.

BLITZ! Attack AGAIN and TAKE THE CITY.

rb1-180.jpg

We capture a settler, which is turned in to a worker.
I use the new Worker to scout ahead.

"Just drive down that road until you get blown up."

Ooh! They spot some more targets-- er, "enemy units".

A peek inside Canterbury. Some buildings have survived.

rb1-181.jpg

I queue up a Granary and order two Artist specialists for when the city is pacified.

I reinforce the city by moving some of our City Garrison units forward.
Ten turn movement on rails is not infinite, but it sure beats moving along roads!

One of our two-promotions tanks is sent chasing the targets down in the ice.

rb1-182.jpg

No damage to us. Very sad for them.
I was only able to hit one target, though. Our other tanks have other priorities!

rb1-183.jpg

The unit guarding their horses... Wow, does it do a number on our Tank or what!
Takes him down almost to half strength!
That's the end of my initial push. I have to use our remaining healthy Tank to cover that wounded one.

I wake an Infantry from Rosa and advance him to a forested hill across the border.
I cover our exposed workers with other units as necessary.
A couple of our back line Riflemen are awakened and moved forward.
Not too many though! Don't want to invite an invasion on our back side!

That concludes our effort on the Zeroeth Turn. :)

Say what? ZEROETH turn? Yes, the Inherited Turn. IT1880AD. :D

Now I shall Press Enter and begin my First Turn.

There are ten more turns to come. :cooool:

Feel free to take your time with these turns, Sirian. I'm leaving in a couple hours on a roadtrip down to North Carolina for the UNC/Maryland football game tomorrow. I won't be able to play any turns in this game until Sunday, as a result. Of course, England will be a landscape of smoking craters by that point in time, so I can come back in order to take charge of the post-war reconstruction. :)
