Why does this thread show 95 pages, but won't let me know at #95?

Glad to see your computer is working again.

While my numbers are half yours, I was experiencing the same problem for a time.
Interesting.

1978AD: TIME WARP!

A mysterious alien device known only as "PRDC One Oh Nine" has pushed the Cuban Isolationists in to a parallel universe! :crazyeye: All hail the programming puissance of the SJ Unit number five two three. :worship:

1968AD: Cuban vanguards march on Vitcos and Ainu.

"Knock Knock"

"Who's There?"

"Ainu"

"Ainu who?"

"Ainu gonna surrender to us now?"

(OK, if you've read this far and are now wondering why in the heck you've been waiting two weeks to read a stupid knock knock joke, raise your hand. ... Not all at once, please!)

:rotfl:

IBT 1968AD: Our forward Armor unit at Ainu is bombed by enemy fighters!

Then in rolls the enemy artillery, and the Incans have erased our eastern vanguard.

Note to self: one single unit NOT sufficient to roll over the stalwarts at Ainu!

1969AD: Vanguard at Vitcos has engaged the enemy. Insufficient forces to capture the town.

We have a gunship in attack position. They have SAMs in place. What to do?

Well, sometimes, the answer lies with First Strikes. Sometimes.

Pow! Bang! Boom!

If the only boosts that you can get are from 10% bonuses, then you may help your cause more with the first strikes. NOT if you can only promote to Drill I, though. If you can't get to Drill II or better, in my view, you might as well not go there at all. Drill IV can be a serious thing to reach, though, and these late game units with Vassalage, Theocracy, Barracks and Pentagon can start with three promotions. Going right to Drill III can be attractive in the right circumstance. First Strikes are not as good vs cities as City Raider, not ever, but some units cannot promote to City Raider. First Strikes seem to be particularly effective vs wounded units, though.

One of the things that makes the Flanking Promotions attractive is Flanking II grants immunity to First Strikes. If Drill I wasn't such a lousy stand-alone promotion, maybe this side of the game would see a little more use. :) Since there are so few high-Drill units around, Flanking II is kind of like wearing a motorcycle helmet when your bike is broken down. You don't need the protection for a threat that you won't encounter!

When the forward units are done attacking, the reinforcements roll. Vitcos's days are numbered. :satan:

Hooray! Once more it is officially back on (and funnier)!!!

1970AD: Enemy fighters rip up our new oil supply!

Between that, the loss of the vanguard unit (thanks to enemy airstrikes), and the increasing number of enemy Gunships around, I am led to reassess my "all Armor all the time" pseudo strategy and stop wasting Jet Fighter missions on reconnaissance or fighter-baiting. I need to get more serious about Air Superiority!

The most obscure promotion in the game, chevron-star:

You need 26XP to get there. (You can do it with 17XP on a melee or gunpowder unit if Aggressive, but the promotion is of limited value to a 1-move unit pre-railroad, and worse, it's tough to get an early-game unit to survive that long with just Combat promotions!)

War Elephants might actually be a candidate, though. Or Nappy's French Musketeers, if you get to gunpowder early enough to make it worthwhile.

I don't think the promotion should be made more accessible, though. It's one of those things that could suck really bad for game balance if made too easily accessible.

Here's the other obscurity:

The funny thing about that is that the "heal in enemy lands" is nigh on to useless without March. This renders the Mech Infantry the only likely candidate for this one. Something to consider for variant material, but probably not much else.

Chalk up two more kills, and two more XP, for the Elite Cuban Commandos!

I'll get them to 37XP and both the five-star and the chevron-star, if I can.
You can only really do stuff like that in a modern era conquest push.
Otherwise you run out of targets first.

"Knock Knock"

"Who's there?"

"Vitcos"

"Vitcos who?"

"MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!"

 :wow:

El Presidente has developed a fascination with pyromania.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A HOT TIME TONIGHT! :rotfl:

Fahrenheit 532: The temperature at which cities burn. :aargh:

1970AD (continued): So I figured out where that wounded Greek transport was going: FISHING. Arrgh.

We killed the offending ship, but too late for those nets. *sigh*

Note to Japan: you should have surrenedered one of your crappy cities.
This one for example.

If we could have reached the Greeks via this city, the Hydra would not have awakened.
If not for the Hydra's wrath, your home continent WOULD have been spared!
Instead, we come for you. We come, and this time we shall not stop.

Invasion force advanced on Ainu. THIS TIME, we also brought air cover! :cooool:
Their counterattacking Artillery fares more poorly without Fighter assistance!

We will wear them down, and then... Fahrenheit 532. :satan:

1971AD: What are these AI units smoking?!? [pimp]

I guess I didn't do enough burning down of cities late in development.
The AI should not be pushing settler pairs in to the teeth of the enemy's main army!
I mean, yeah, OK, it would be cool if they did it some of the time.
But I'm afraid they're a bit too stubbornly "Civ3ish" about it.
I wonder how exploitable this will turn out to be? Bah.

First Strikes Ride Again:

14XP "West Point Armor" sent in to battle vs one Gunship.
The odds were sucky, pre-promotion. (Gunships are boss vs Tanks).
Give a Modern Armor a bunch of First Strikes, though...

Wallah! Drill IV unit after one combat. Now that is just sickening.
Can't fault the AI there. They threw the right unit in to my path.
They just can't stand up to our forces without more units in coordination.
The answer to someone's SoD is still to bring your own SoD.
Just that now it also requires some strategy, too.

The battle of Vilcas is joined.

Once again, not enough units in the forward group to take the city, but it's a start.

The battle of Ainu is joined.

Not enough forward units, blah blah blah. Etc etc.

New Eretria reaches 102 culture and pops its border again.

The passageway at Green Dot is opened. Before us lies Greece.

"Knock Knock"

"Who's there?"

"Greece"

"Greece who?"

"Pour some more Greece on the fire, will you?"

Fahrenheit 532. We are the firemen, coming for you.

The Invasion of Greece has begun.

Hi, are you making a play on Ray Bradbury's book: Fahrenheit 451 with that? As you might or might not know the book is about a guy who is a fireman (in the future it is a person who sets books on fire for a living since they are considered "obsolete") and the Fahrenheit 532... we are the firemen, coming for you caught my eye. It is a good book if you haven't read it and really worth reading. Also, they made a movie for it which is o.k. but the book is better.

I think you can set Science back to 100%. Or is there a reason you need 10k+ gold this late in the game? Do you have a thousand units somewhere that need upgrades, or do you plan on rushing an entire spaceship?

I can see how this would be applicable to Multi-player, but how about the AI? Does the AI "randomly" promote so that you would see more Drill-promoted units? Or are you referring specifically to this game?

P.S. Welcome back ;)

I finished reading through the 24 pages the other day and was SHOCKED :)eek:) to find it not finished! Glad it continuing again, though. It's been a great read.

He was definitely parodying Fahrenheit 451. And yes, it is a great book.

Wow, our units have a sickening amount of experience. That Combat V/Commando Armor will be something to see (not to mention the fact that we already have multiple City Raider III/Barrage tanks running around). And it's only going to get worse, because there are a LOT of cities left to go. :)

yay!
and the jokes are better too!

If you think about it, 532 - 451 = 81, which is 3 to the 4th power. This is code for 3 "d"s (3 of the 4th letter of the alphabet). DDD commonly means "Death, Doom, and Destruction," which is exactly what is going on here. I'm surprised nobody else got this reference.

Nope, but that is cool but disturbingly strange.

1971AD (continued): Japanese Frigate challenges our B-ship. :smoke:

Note the galleon trying to slip by unnoticed! Settler on board.
(Same move as the Incans, sending settler to now-open land.)
(Not an ideal behavior, but better in this case than last time.)

Sapporo = infested with non-citizens = 532 :devil:

BURN, BABY, BURN!!! :wow:

1972AD: Noble Japanese warriors invade Cuba! :goodjob:

You've got to admire their divine wind mentality. Horse Archers and Catapults against Mechs! That's bravery.

Three full galleons, too! And escorted!
So many targets, we can't sink them fast enough!

Of course I HAD left some modern armor over here at one point, but it looks like Sulla shipped them to the front.

Oh well. :) We've got cash. --> UPGRADE TIME!
