RB1 - Cuban Isolationists

By the way... I might as well ask, from two pros, what do you think of my playing and city placement so far? Is there anything you would have done differently (and better?)

Yes, mine has that too. At least before the patch, dunno if it changed.

I've started a fair number of random leader games now, and it seems to pick Izzy far more than any other leader (about 3-4 out of ten times I'll end up being Izzy as opposed to 1-2 - usually one - for everyone else...)

Yes every firsttime Random leadergame (= first game after starting Civ4) features Izzy as the randomly chosen Leader for me. So I usually go back to Mainmenu and start another Random Leader game which has then really randomly chosen Leaders.

The first Game after installing the Patch would have been Izzy again.

S&S, just wanted to say this has been an awesome thread. I've done a lot of reading in these forums, but few postings (as you can tell). Just had to de-lurk and let you guys know this thread has been a real learning experience.

I was previously completely in the dark about how religion worked and how use it for income. Well, my last game was a religionous experience. :mischief: Really made use the income from the temples in a big way. :king:

Still have to work on my specialist management.

Ok, I didn't see anything in RB rules about whether speculating about the moves of a player is considered a no-no, but after 4 days and 7 screens without new turns :aargh: my imagination is running ahead of me... If it's a sin, ostracize me. So, what does the silent majority think, where will Sirian be at the end of 1985, if indeed he stops then? Maybe we should start betting.

North: Thomas the tank takes Marathon in '76 (post #647), this much we know. Sirian doesn't forget that combat settler, razes the city and build another in the same spot. He rushes a transport and ships troops immediately - there's a tank gun showing at the edge of the '77 shelling snapshot (#724). He can reach and with some luck take Herakleia in '79, this lets him put a city eg. on the easternmost Greek mainland tile. Airports are getting built in Rome, by then he took everything from Mycenae south, so by '80 he can airlift 6 units/turn to mainland & island Greece.

The terrain is rough on island Greece so I expect the Barb city and Sapporo to fall 'round '81-'82 with help of gunships, or be spared due to the Japan peace treaty, though I doubt this . Sapporo is 3 tiles from the mainland so that elliminates the option of a northern front, which is lamentable :).

My call, depending on Alex's resistance, by '85 he'll be in Knossos or pounding on its doors, with everything east of it belonging to Cuba.

South: More guessing and calculating here. Does Nasca not get autorazed? It looks that way from the '76 minimap (#647). He has a new city in the ice in '76, Tierra del Fuego :) and in '77 he's bombing Vitcos, his first prey, this much seems certain.

Best case scenario, 3 cities in '76, means 6 new units by '77, max 8 to send forward (3 just flown in guarding the cities), enough for starters. The march is long but Vitcos has been "prepared", falls in '79 or '80. More units flying in by then, enough to continue the push north to Vilcas and start a southern front at Ainu. The two should be down in '81 or '82, and it's downhill from then.

My call, in '85, the front will stretch NW and S from Vilcambamba, which will be just coming under siege.

I'll stop here as I'm boring myself already. I wonder how far off the mark I'll be.

I waste a whole day of work and don't even get a conclusion?

Ah, what a nice Thanksgiving. What, Sirian doesn't have the turn done yet? Surely there must be a mistake! But there's like 100 more posts than when I last checked in, so I assumed there *MUST* have been... oh wait, that's right. Our lurkers... :crazyeye:

I'm scared by how much Sirian's Chinese Checkers avatar actually looks like him. :)

It actually snowed in Baltimore briefly on the night before Thanksgiving! You have no idea how rare that is in these parts. Well, another day of watching football and eating the Thanksgiving leftovers doesn't sound too bad for me. Sirian can take his time on the turns.

Dear Readers,

We now have so many cities, and so many units on the board, that the Civ4 crash problems on my machine are completely out of hand. Six and eight crashes per turn, having to replay parts of a turn over and over -- sometimes, I'm spending most of my time in crash recovery rather than in playing. That's getting a bit old.

Patch 1.09 does not resolve my main issue, nor did I expect it to do so, for reasons I spelled out (more or less) the last time I brought up the subject.

I'm in the process of ordering parts for my new machine, and at this point I need to wait until I have the new computer to continue this game. It's just too much slog factor involved at this point.

There are still no known instances of anybody else reporting the problem with the interface that trips up my machine -- and crashes in a way that won't produce error reports. Whatever is the problem here, it is not being experience by very many players, as we still know so little about it. I may have to take my (current, soon to be former) machine to Firaxis HQ to get it figured out. Meanwhile, most if not all of the crashes whoses sources were known got fixed in the first patch.

RB1 will continue, but I need to take a few days hiatus first. Sorry! :)

Maybe Sulla can play a short solo game or something, or we can all sit around the (virtual) campfire and sing Kumbayah together.

Oh, and don't overeat your holiday leftovers for lack of something to do. Get out your own copy of Civ4 and play a few turns. Or do your Christmas shopping. Those of you reading from work can take this off-time to get extra work done so that you can sneak in more RB1 reading time when the game picks up again. :cooool:

Ahh, Sirian's crash-tastic computer still acting up. It's been doing that since... well, longer than Civ4's been out, is all I'll say! :) We'll resume in a little bit when Sirian has his new computer on hand.

(Psst - hey Sirian! The patch is out now. Perhaps this would be a good time to release the first RB Epic? :mischief: )

reformat and reinstall?

Can you post screen shots of some of your cities? I'm currious about how you manage tile layout. I have some ideas of my own but I cant seem to get comfortable with how I do it. Lumbermill vs Farm, Mill vs Mine etc.

Also, as far as trying to force more than 3 religions into one city, It's pretty much the only way to achieve a cultural victory. 7 (you dont NEED all 7) Monestaries give 14 base culture, and 7 Cathedrals give +350% culture.

That has been the plan since forever.

If I had known the first patch would take this long, I'd have run Adventure One on v1.00, but oh well. Just goes to show that even little birdies can be wrong sometimes.

I sent Epic One to Griselda earlier in the evening, by the way. :cooool:

What was old is new again. :)

Hey Sirian, try running window mode, that should help you out with crashing... worked like a charm for me.

There is an entrance in the civ 4 ini file called FullScreen or something like it. If you turn it off (0) your game should work fine and not crash every turn.

I have run more windowed mode (while working on Civ4) than full screen, so that's not the source of my particular issue. (Crashes both ways). It was worth a shot to mention, though, right? :) Thanks for the thought.

Hey Sirian,
May be you can post what you have played till now and may be may be Sulla can do some overtime?
Or there are too many may be's here.

hey, the game has been crashing for me as well

though it only crashed i think on a huge (or large) map - whichever is the default size for the Earth. it got to a point where it would crash if not every turn then every other turn.

I would not get an error message either, i eventually gave up on that game. [the crashes started when i reached late age and had many cities]. since then i've limited myself to at most Standard size maps and haven't had any crashes, but it was terribly frustrating having the game crash.

my specs are P4 -3.2GHZ, 1Gig of ram and a 256MB PCI Express ATI Radeon x600.

never had trouble rendering anything. the crashes seemed to come apparently randomly (i.e. i dont think i was doing any particular one thing before a crash)

it was terribly frustrating! :D

on another note. great story guys

I was going to ask if they would mind doing that as well :) Maybe shots of Havana, Santa Rosa and of San Roberto. Like in Roberto, what setup got you enough food to work all those hills?
