RB1 - Cuban Isolationists

... a pin of DOOM!

Seriously, with Christmas on top of us, most of the SGs seem to be taking a week or so off now. On the bright side, this means that we loyal readers can also go on vacation without missing anything!

NO!!! That's what they WANT you to think!!! Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by the impending :xmas: ! Must drink more :coffee: to be prepared for their sneak-attack post at the last minute! :hammer:

What? Why are you looking at me like that? I don't need :help: !

There are PLENTY of reports to read from Epic One.

You can also read the other RB SGs. For RB6, I just posted my turn.

Sulla will probably be wandering in here with his next RB1 turn before Christmas. I think.

While resting from Epic One report writing, I positively REMOVED ALL DIRT FROM THEIR TIMEPIECES :whipped: in this one game of Chinese Checkers.

Yes sirree. Cleaned their clocks.

(Note the ghost image for my avatar. I haven't "properly" reinstalled this piece of software yet. *sigh*

:hmm: This is odd. It is 3:53 A.M. and no one is around. :hmm: I guess that leaves me all alone . Also... "Sleep is for the weak:p!"

Even odder. It's 3:35, over here.. And now I'm all alone. :( :(

So far my best score is 34, but I still haven't figured out how to play the game competently. Been spending more time in Yacht.

I am in love with Chloe however

I wish I could have fulfilled Sirian's prediction. However, as is the case for many of you, the last week before Christmas is a bit crazy for me as well. Between giving my students their final exams, then grading all of their finals, writing my Epic One report, reading a ton of other Epic One reports, getting my last-minute shopping done, preparing to see the family for a few days, AND getting a new computer delivered (seriously, I'm not Sirian, it's just a coincidence! :D) - it's been a busy week. Very busy.

I hope to have my new machine up and running at the start of next week and knock out my overdue 10 turns then. :)

Just thought I would add a post here. I'm a good friend of Sulla (since 3rd grade actually, back when we called him Mike), and have used his Beta testing to get an inside look at Civ IV. I love reading this thread and can say that reading these reports is a lot of fun if you have the time to waste!

As soon as I get a new computer (probably when I graduate in May:goodjob: ), I will be sure to get Civ IV and start the addiction officially.

Meanwhile, I'll make sure Sulla gets on playing the game.

Make sure you watch ESPN on Sunday night and watch the Ravens beat the Vikings!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good civ-destroying night!! :xmassign:

Ho ho ho!

Grading papers? Last minute shopping? New computer? A likely story. :whipped:

I guess I'll have to get in to the holiday spirit and be forgiving.

Cheers. :xmas:

Merry Christmas to All !

first post! was testing to see if this thread was still working, it's been a long time since the last post, lol

i'm hooked on this thread!

While we're all waiting on Sulla to finish celebrating that his Ravens knocked the Vikings out of the playoffs...

If you've read this thread all the way through, then you may remember this game.
I played it all the way out. My first game of Civ4, on Emperor, and I was losing the tech race.

So... I decided to apply an alternative solution.

Hello Catherine! :wavey: Mind if I make myself at home?

sirian-game1-12.jpg

You are looking live at an application of The Sirian Doctrine.
This tactic not seen in RB1 because our ships were confined to our own waters.
Catherine's empire shall fall to attack from the sea!

sirian-game1-13.jpg

Financial civs can be unstoppable teching machines on water maps.
That is, if you sit back and let them tech in peace.
Of course, to attack, you have to charge in to the face of superior technology.
(I wasn't anywhere near Robotics!)

sirian-game1-14.jpg

However, that is doable. Fortune favors the bold! :hammer:

sirian-game1-15.jpg

You are looking at Navy SEALs ripping the heart out of Russia's holy city.

Mechanized Infantry? Not a problem. :whipped:

sirian-game1-9.jpg

New Definition of "Combined Arms": attacking simultaneously from both land and sea!

sirian-game1-16.jpg

sirian-game1-17.jpg

A whole freaking NEST OF MECHS over here.

sirian-game1-18.jpg

You do NOT want to see Americans advancing up your beach. It's that simple.

Before too much longer, the threat of Catherine is ended.

sirian-game1-10.jpg

Here's where the world map stood at that point.

sirian-game1-11.jpg

I left her with three crappy Fishing Villages(TM).

However, all the time it took to stop Catherine from launching, now Victoria is threatening to do so.
So she had to be stopped!
By the time I stopped her, Julius was building parts.
By the time I stopped him, Mao was building parts.

In for a penny, in for a pound!

Ever seen a LEVEL SEVEN unit die in combat? You have now.

sirian-game1-19.jpg

Arrgh! So close to Level Eight!
That unit had won DOZENS of battles for me! :(

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I took Backdoor Domination(TM) in 1995AD.

sirian-game1-20.jpg

Just LOOK at the Casualty Lists.

sirian-game1-21.jpg

Forty-eight (48!) Destroyers destroyed.
Meanwhile, I lost only six (6!) myself.

The AI has a ways to go to match a skilled player on the high seas! Even on Emperor.

This report brought you to by Waiting On Sulla Until he Posts.

WOSUP! As in, "Yo, hey, WOSUP mon."

And some people say that navies are useless in Civ4! Being in the middle of a modern-age island war in a solo game, I have to say that ships are key. Carriers simply rock, while battleships and destroyers negate the cultural defenses of all coastal cities. Main difference is that I'm playing Japan and made it a policy to take out America before he built more than one SEAL unit (which died horribly to a tank division after being strafed by two carrierloads of fighters). ;)

Looking forward to the resumption of RB1 though. ::hint hint:: :D

You you really enjoy modern naval warfare, play the WWII Desert Fox scenario (especially as the British). The Third Reich is just relentless. Was a bit too much of a challenge for me pre-patch (WW was bugged), but should be just right now.

Wow, I can't believe I just spent several hours reading all 53 pages of this thread tonight, only to find it heartbreakingly incomplete.

Awesome game Sulla and Sirian... awesome. Both in terms of game play and write-up :)

Happy Holidays and hope to see this game wrapping up soon :)

A question for you:
For a defensive/technology minded player (I tend to be peaceful and try to out tech others) in online MP, which two civ traits would you recommend and why?

Once again thanks for an amazing thread. :salute:

In order to specify an exact number of continents in Custom Continents, each continent has to have its own zone, its own region, and these have to have enough water between them to ensure they don't merge (and produce less than the requested number of actual continents).

If you want more randomnity to relationships between continents, you have to play the normal Continents map script. But then, of course, you can't choose the number of continents. It's one or the other. You can't have both!

- Sirian
I've never understood this notion. Wouldn't a simple Monte-Carlo algorithm applied at an early point in the generation of the land forms be enough to generate a specific number of realistic-looking continents?

OK, finally managed to finish my turns. Given how long they take (and each one takes more than an hour), I only played 5 this time. Sirian, you can take 5 or 10 as you please, although 10 might finish the game at this point. Still your call regardless.

(0) 1955AD OK, trying to figure out where everything is in this game... been a LONG while since I played, and there are a LOT of units on the map. We have over 50 tanks alone, did you know that? Anyway, the gameplan is to burn everything in site, keeping only enough territory to give our bombers room to operate. Conquest or bust, baby! With our war weariness as bad as it is (we are still seeing unhappy faces at 50% luxuries!), I dial research down to 0%. It's not like we really need that Future Tech anyway, and we really can't afford the kind of deficit spending Sirian was doing (-800 gpt with 1100g in the bank? That's Charis-like spending there!) Actually - given our situation, I revolt to Police State:

RB1-postate.jpg

Drastic cut in war weariness across the board, AND we get additional production on military units. That gets us down to 20% luxuries (and thanks to the new patch, cities with Jail + Mt. Rushmore + Police State actually have NO war weariness at all!) and now we're running a +864gpt rate. I channel that back into research, and we have Future Tech 1 due in 4 turns. Who says that Police States aren't good for science! ;)

RB1-toughnut.jpg

Cimmerian is going to be a tough nut to take. Gunships at 24 strength, is that a change in the new version? (This is almost like my summer work, when we would come in every day and see what the new build was like, discovering changes along the way. Those were the days...) The best unit to attack here will actually be mechs, so I'll see if I can scrounge some up for the attack. Cimmerian is a blight in our back lines and must be taken out before advancing further. Moving units everywhere, trying to get a handle on the situation. So much going on!

(1) 1956AD Many builds complete, several borders expand, and we get 4 instances of "we love the dictator" day! Everybody loves our Stalinist rule, it seems. Ooh, Huayna made a mistake and moved those gunships out of Cimmerian:

RB1-hmistake.jpg

Covering those units with SAMs was a good idea, but our bombers smash the stack regardless. Helicopters still lose to bombers! (By the way, I've ordered up LOTS of new bombers. We're suffering few losses of tanks, but our bomber ranks need some replenishing.) Mechs then clean up the pile:

RB1-mechguns.jpg

I thought that that was the worst that Huayna had to offer, but no, here comes another major stack incoming as we speak:

RB1-gunships2.jpg

I don't have the units to attack it this turn, so we'll defend for now and hit it next turn. Shuffling units on the Incan front so that they can't be hit by that Incan stack next turn. Also moving units into place to hit the now weakly-defended city of Cimmerian.
