Halcyon said:None of this 'great man' tosh. He was useless and everyone knew it. The principle reason why he's so liked - apart from being dead - is because the USSR happened to fall apart on his watch. His little arms race may have accelerated the Soviet decline by a few years, but the holes which eventually sank the (already rather badly constructed and probably not watertight) ship were made by Stalin, and only added to by his successors.
Combine this fortuitous timing and general uselessness with a lowering of taxes, an amusing assassination attempt, a period of high consumer confidence (see above) and his being an insane Christian (he once made an interesting speech wherein he accused Libya of leading the world to armageddon, Russia of being the kingdom of Gog and being allied against God, and went on to advocate nuclear war) and you have the ideal Republican president. Takes orders, doesn't care, bit loony, crap actor, great stuff. It's not a formula which anyone'd try to repeat, eh?

i am of the school of thought that it was reagan, while increasing military expenditures threefold, who was primarily responsible for bankrupting the soviets b/c they knew that they simply couldn't keep up.
as for the huge deficits, things in life ain't free and if we had to run up those types of deficits again to wipe out, say, terrorism, i would do it in a heartbeat.

Lincoln already honors the Civil War era, Jackson represents military leaders turned President and Grant is not even a terribly esteemed leader.
Loaf Warden said:Surely there are better options available for that. TR, anyone? When does he get to have his face on currency?
zjl56 said:I would want Reagan on the 1$ coin because the person on it right now wasn't a U.S citizen.
Mojotronica said:Right now I think Reagan has the BEST shot at the $1 bill or coin
Mojotronica said:Reagan's popularity could provide an incentive to shift to a coin-based dollar, something the mint would like to do for long-term cost-savings purposes.
If she isn't important then she shouldn't be on the coin.Archer 007 said:Sacagewea should be on a coin, IMO, because she isnt that important to US history.
