Rick Perry

The personal narratives of Perry and Bush couldn't be more different. Bush was a blue-blood New Englander, Perry was a poor West Texas kid. Their similarities come from their policies, not their demographics.

Wasn't this basically what Bush was pretending to be though? The 2000 primary was a bit before I paid much attention to politics, but my impression of the situation was that that was the 'Texas' image that he was trying to project.

I understand he was born in connecticut, lived in texas for most of his life though. I mean - how could he fake that accent all that time? :P

Same way I can fake a British accent: watch alot of British TV and make people wince when I speak.

Have we really gotten so polarized that now we are grading candidates on a line by line basis of their transcripts?

Wow.

But at least his transcripts are released and public. I wonder who's isnt?

Some people do pick up the accent of where they live and lose the one from where they grew up. Happens all the time. And some people work at it and then it becomes natural. Julia Roberts grew up in Georgia, and in recent years didn't even know how to do a Southern accent for a movie. She had deliberately lost the accent to that extent.

Your saying you could fake a British accent for 8 years everytime you talk to the press? You would lapse into your original voice after about 30 seconds.

If I had to and my voter support depended on it I could do training with a dialect coach.

No, but it is easy to pick up an accent if you work at it and constantly lapse into it. I have a friend like that who does that with a Cockney accent.

Well if you worked at it i'm sure you could do it.

Anyway a cursory glance at his Wiki proves he was born in Connecticut but spent his childhood and life in Texas. So I think the whole monologue of him pretending to be a Texan when he was a blue blooded New Englander all along is..a little inaccurate. Born in a Blue-blood family in New England yet raised as a Texan, sonnds more reasonable.

Wow! Rick Perry Threatens Bernanke, And Says More QE Would Be "Almost Treasonous"
Joe Weisenthal and Zeke Miller | Aug. 15, 2011, 10:20 PM

Funny, the last round of QE sure helped Perry prop up his "Texas Miracle" shtick.

So we're going to trust a guy that nearly failed basic economics to get us out of a recession? Awesome.

I'm sure Alan Greenspan has never received a B in his life, and the man is a certified loon (aka, an objectivist). Perry sucks for alot of reasons, can we not focus on the insignificant ones?

Has a fair chance of being nominated fortunately I don't think he would beat Obama.
He has less chance in the general election than Romney would have. He's quite a ways behind Obama in all polls that I've read about while Romney is close, tied or slightly ahead. I also expect the economy to be marginally better by 11/2012 and the stock market quite a bit higher. If I'm wrong on these items he could win.

Yesterday, ABC News reported that Obama's approval rating sank to 39% according to a Gallup poll. I'd never vote for Perry or any other right winger, but at this point I think anyone with a pulse could beat Obama.

Yeah, there is some truth to that. Bush pretended to be what Perry actually is.

Completely agree. Perry has given us plenty of examples of questionable decision making in his current office. Grades as a 20 year old don't matter very much. It's not like he's running on his educational pedigree.

Those are the points the D's should run on. You can't argue college transcripts after nominating Gore and Kerry. (Plus Gore got a D in science, yet there are people who listen to him on global warning.) Grades matter for your first job out of college. After that employers want to see your work record.

Reading about anti-intellectualism makes me face hurt.

Is it really anti-intellectualism? The anti-Ivy League sentiment comes more from the Ivies being diploma factories for the rich and stupid (see Bush, George; Kerry, John; Gore, Al).

Bill Clinton has an Ivy pedigree and is literally a Rhodes Scholar, and he managed to win twice. Bush won twice even though the D's somehow found two even dumber people to run against him. Kennedy was an intellectual and beat Nixon. Fact is that the smarter candidate usually wins. Last exception was 1980 and Carter was an incumbent with a bad economy.

What Clinton, Bush, and Kennedy had in common was they were "cool", someone you'd want to join you for a beer. Their opponents were weenies (Daddy Bush, Gore, Kerry) or crotchety old men (Dole, J-Mac).
