Every year Singaporean Students have to take this NAFA Test (Something like the Presidental Fitness Test) to see if they are phsically fit.

Now the test has 6 segmets that test different things such as stamina, leg power, flexibity and so on. They are:
Pull ups/Incline Pull up
Sit ups
Sit and Reach
Shuttle Run (40m)
Standing Board Jump
and what most students consider the most gruesome feat of the year, running the 2.4km (1.49 miles)

Each of these segmets have different targets that are needed in order for you to pass that test. The target can be affected by your age and gender

For example, Boys of older age have to do more sit ups than boys of younger age and that Girls have to stretch more than boys in Sit and Reach.

Now the reason why I brought this up is that, there is a foreigner in my school (Australian) who states that running the 2.4km (Male 15 years old must run it within 14mins and 25secs. Male 14 years old must run it in 15mins) in the targeted time is a very insane thing to do and that it pushes the bar for a healthy student way to high. Wow most of us locals believe the 2.4km is a torture tool, we still see it as a normal thing.

My question is, is it weird/extreme for 15 year old boys to run 2.4km(1.49 miles) within 14mins and 25 secs or otherwise be branded as unfit in other countries?

Also, imagine, can the male 15 year olds in your country do it and percieve it as a norm?

Running at just over 6 mph is easy. I could have done that when I was 14. I could have walked it in 15 minutes!

I reckon it'd now take me about 7 minutes.

1 and a half miles in 15 minutes is not that hard. At our school your expected to be able to run one mile in 7:00, which is harder than that.

Not usually, but when I've been in a rush I've walked that fast before. When I was hiking in Iceland a friend and I managed 14 miles in 2 hours with 20-30kg rucksacks and in hiking boots.

That's friggin' slow. When I was 15 I could run that in under 10 minutes.

Then you will get a gold for 2.4km

Can you also jump 2 metres without a running start?

That's friggin' slow. When I was 15 I could run that in under 10 minutes.

Seconded. Our lacrosse team was held to the six-minute mile; doesn't mean everyone did it, but dammit we tried. I think my best time was 6:10 for one mile, and almost exactly 10:00 for the 1.5 mile.

I think that 1.5 miles in 15 minutes is a reasonable expectation for some, and a reasonable goal for others; you don't have to be a marathon runner, but it still denotes a certain level of cardiovascular capablity, and physical health.

For cross country we ran 3 miles in the 25-35 minute range.

Anyway, how's it like to live in a fascist state?

While I have no idea hows that related to the topic, I prefer to call it Liberal Narrowminded Facsocialist.

hmm.. In the US, the rule is something below 8 minutes and a half for one whole mile to be elibile for the 'president's honor' or something like that. If someone can't do a whole mile under 15~16+ minutes, then that student is pretty much encouraged to start again after school. Maybe 14 minutes and 29 isn't so bad for 1.5 miles, but it's a little more strict.

I went to a public high school, and I remember many kids reaching those standards, except of course for the fat and/or smart nerdy kids.

When I was 6 I ran a mile in 10 minutes... And I'm one of the least fit people I know.

Yeah, in the US, its an 8 min mile for a high schooler.

The standard in the OP is not unfair at all. One should be able to meet that even if they walk part of the course

I dont see what too unfair. People slow down through wear and tear as they run. Possibly they can run the first mile in 8 mins, but the next half mile, i doubt they can run it in around 4mins. Possibly a 2 minute slowdown seems normal giving the total time for 1.5miles....14mins

I think it's insane. But in the good way! :D

I think every student should do this at least once. It's good fitness and builds character.

I did the 1500m in 7 minutes when I was 13. So this is not exactly the Olympics, no.

First I doubt that I'd do that now as I'm fat.

Still, that shouldn't be too hard for normal kids. I never was in great shape but I would have done that at 15. In the army I ran 2.4 km in 12 minutes (actually in about 11 minutes as like many others I stopped after 2.4 km as it was the required amount). I was 19 then.
