If Putin is defeated, I will be amazed. Of course, it would mean that there really is a democratic process in Russia(or at least, the people behind the curtain have a really good illusion going).
Putin's done a lot of good for Russia, especially from a Russian perspective - he's made the nation great again economically and has vastly expanded its influence. Even if Russia likely can never again attain the glory of the USSR, his actions have certainly helped it maintain prominence.
But, we've gotten by without such leaders as Reagan, FDR, Teddy, Jefferson or Washington, each having left their mark on our nation... but our nation continues without them.

Here's food for thought - why do we think of Putin as a dictator, when FDR ruled for 12 years and was ready to move onto 16 before he died of natural causes? Same goes for any elected official who rules more than a decade.
The idea seems to be that in a real democracy, people will routinely rotate the government. But, whose to say that the elites aren't all in on it and put on this rotation as part of the bread and circuses?
