Salt vs. sugar: the final battle!

As a cook, salt is vastly more important than sugar. It is relatively easy to get sweetness without using sugar, say from celery or any caramelized vegetable. Salt is a lot harder to substitute. Plus, salt makes meat, and nearly every other food, taste better, and it is important when preserving foods. If I had to give up one it would be sugar, hands down.

I do have to note that I love salty hot chocolate though. It is a delicious confluence of flavors.

I love sugar, but also have developed a taste in spicy food in recent years. One day, I'll muster the courage to try the infamous curry.

After I had my wisdom teeth removed, I developed a taste in salt water. Everyone thought I was crazy, but there was just something delicious about warm water with a pinch of salt... too much will make you sick though, from what I hear(which makes sense).

Completely depends on the time of day and whatever mood I'm in. Popcorn or candy both are acceptable and great if I'm in the mood but I have no real preference except maybe a slight inclination towards salt.

"pleasures" associated with eating are inefficient and meaningless.

That's generally true for people who have the inability to enjoy sustainable pleasure from simpler things. You find this a lot with people who have ADHD, bipolar, and similar.

Go back to your alcove. You're not in a cube anymore.

It is true that many times the short-term perceived benefits of food are harmful in the longrun. If we could learn to not want those treats, we'd probably experience better total lives.

I would say I have pretty strong willpower for someone who enjoys sugary/fattening food, and it's still tempting to this day to gorge on these delicacies. The addiction is tough to break.

Dem facts - then Dem impications :goodjob: lol I know Perf. was joking, but it's still pretty funny.

Let's be honest; every one of us was that kid who put sugar on his/her Chocolate Sugar Puffs. No matter how much candy we got on Halloween, we wanted to eat as much of it on that very night as possible, even if it made us sick.

Does this change as we get older?

People wanting less sugar as they go from being children to adults is confirmed, for sure.

Personally I've always put a lot salt and a lot of seasoning when I cook. Universally I came to find that everyone says I put to much seasoning and too much salt, so I know how to compensate when I am cooking for others, then I add more to my own plate.

I like the taste of both, but adding extra of said substances to one's food was a decadent First-World custom I never adapted.
