As a cook, salt is vastly more important than sugar. It is relatively easy to get sweetness without using sugar, say from celery or any caramelized vegetable. Salt is a lot harder to substitute. Plus, salt makes meat, and nearly every other food, taste better, and it is important when preserving foods. If I had to give up one it would be sugar, hands down.
I do have to note that I love salty hot chocolate though. It is a delicious confluence of flavors.
