SC02 - The Goodbye Kiss

Peace would be good, but they want a city in return. I wouldn't give a city....someday they will pay for this.........:mad:

Early - Set up the forces at Ollantambayo and Huamanga and hurt the Inca as they emerged but was less than successful in killing them. It took two of ours to kill one of theirs, but at least it put an end to their incursion in force into our territory. I switched our reaearch path to get Currency and then Civil Service for the economic benefits and the maces. Crossbows from Machinery and mills were going to be less useful for us.

Middle - Regrouped on the iron hill at Ollantambayo and in the forests outside Teo to prevent any Inca incursions and was successful in eliminating their invaders with the loss of only one catapult. Harried a barbarian city to the south. It has grown to two and we should be able to take and keep it if we want early in the next turn set.

Late - used the whip to finish forges for both happiness and productivity. With the forges built we can start putting out decent numbers of attacking troops, like maces with Cover and Melee promotions. If we have four or five cats going up against the Inca towns City Raider promotions are less useful. Trained some axes and gave them all Melee promotions as we will need those more than anything else to go up against Huayana's maces. Horse archers are simply not useful attacking cities with any kind of defense in them, or any kind of Melee unit in the open.

We are in a big technology hole. Everyone else on the continent has raced right past us. The Capac will not talk peace short of giving him a town. The only way to get out of this war is keep killing his troops as they cross into the territory, then train some maces and some more cats and capture at least one town. Civil Service is due soon, once we learn that we can convert to Buddhism, swap to Bureauracracy, train some maces, hurt the Capac at Huamanga and Ollantambayo, then sue for peace.

It does not look good for the home team right now. We will have a hard time fighting our way out of this, but never say die. Our next choice for research should be the shortest path to Chemistry. This is going to be a fight to the finish so prepare for war....

Isn't Machinery necessary to build maces? Or do we have it?

Good luck ucel.

You are probably right, somehow I thought Machinery gave you Xbows and that you didn't need Machinery for maces.

Chalk up another boob for the Bede! :blush:

Precheck:
Moved out the troops from Nubian (barb city) so they can rest for a bit.
As I see it properly, the only solution for us is Huamanga's Gambit: capture tha city and sue for peace.
And we have no macemen

Start!

1) 1360
Teno: Forge->HA
HC Finished Spiral Minaret. This is the place where I normally give up. We should wait a little with this war.

2) 1370
Teno: HA->HA
Teo: Axe->Jaguar

First troops approached Huamanga. 20% and 6 defenders: 2xMaxe, 2xCat, LB, Quencha

3) 1380
Two cats suicides our stack, then 2 HA were taken out by maces.
CS->Machinery, we'll get our maces in 3 turns

Texoco: Axe->Forge (the city is too distant to support our troops directly)
Made Liz more friendly to us and delayed her a little. She'll adopt Hereditary Rule.

4) 1390
Teno: HA->GA
Teo: Jag->Axe
Pink Dot: Forge->HA

Sci to 70% so we get Machinery next turn
3 defenders left in Huanga, one of them is 5th level maceman. We'll attack next turn.

Nubian (barb city) captured! We got 33 gold.
I decided to burn it, it will cost us too much this time. Bye crabs :(.

5) 1400
Machinery->Feudalism
Tlax: Court->Forge

Liz has taken the crabs and found the city near by the ruins of Nubian.
Let gods care about us. Starting to take Huanga. City has 11%def by now, but the mace, taking our troops one by one is a little weaker by now (3.9).
Cats: go! LB 6 M 3.9 Q 2
1st dead LB 5.2 M 3.9 Q 1.4
2nd dead LB 4.4 M 3.9 Q 1.0
Jaguars: go!
1st dead LB 1.7 M 3.0 Q 1.0
2nd survived! Mace is out!
Axes: go!
1st: barely, but won! LB is out
2nd: won!
Huamanga is ours! 47g pillaged, city is taken.

HC has changed his mind. He says nothing about the peace now. We'll see tomorrow.
Before the end of turn I lost one HA to take out the crossbowman wandering our territory.

MAC.jpg

at least we can build maces and crosbows :)

6) 1410
Teno: HA->Mace

HC still does not want to talk about peace. I think I can understand this guy.

7) 1420
Pink Dot: HA->Crossbow

Start gathering troops in New Tlateloco. We should start threating Olly.
Teno: Mace->Mace
New Tlateloco: Forge->Cat (needs 2 more)
Huamanga: Barracks

9) 1140
Teo: Mace->Cat (1 more to go)

10) 1450
Trying to invite HC for some :coffee:. But when I discusses the peace matters, he told me
Huyana Capac said:
Not until every last Aztec warrior is ground into dust!

I tried to explain him that I have no more warriors but Axes, Maces and some Archers, but he smashed the door and went out.

No map today, but note to the next player; there is a crossbowman nort of the Huamanga. We'll probably have to lost one city defender before taking him out :(

Status: Sci back to 60%, Feudalism due 2
Border cities: Huamanga, New Tlateloco and Teotihuacan are relatively good defended, unfortunately we have not enough cash for upgrades: mace will cost us 130g.
Gather troops in New Tlateloco and start offensive but first gather at least 3 cats. We have to build up a big stack to take Olly, consisting maces, crossbows and LBs.

Good luck!

IT 1450. Take a looksy around. Check out what we have to deal with.

1. 1460

The crossbow attacked Humanga; killed the HA, but red-lined itself. Got reinforced by another X-bow. Now I wonder, what's the counter for crossbows; duh HA's. Oh well. There's also a mace hanging around.

Hatty currently has at least an 8 tech lead.

Several builds finish:

New Tlateloco Cat- Mace
Tenochitlan Mace- Mace
Pink Dot Xbow- Cat

Apparently Huyana thinks the middle of war is a good time to expand :crazyeyes:

Priorities.JPG

Enter.

2. 1470

Feudalism comes in. Switch to vassalage/serfdom. Begin researching ... let's see what everyone don't have... start Guilds; Huyana has made almost 0 pikes, so if we can get some knights, produce them in secret... who knows.

Huyana has a stack outside of Humanga... Two maces,two crossbows, one 'pult... We have around 5 defenders in the city. It will not hold w/o upgrades. Xbow's would be nice (hold off maces)... but they're cover, so nm. Drop science to 0 to buy some better defenders.

Horse archer stack wanders up to Olly. They have...6 good units. Will probably refrain from attack until I can get 10-12. No spears or pikes, though... I'll see if I can find some iron to pillage... he has two sources... not gonna happen.

Forces assemble. Get +75 gpt w/o sci, we'll need it.

Teo finished a cat, started a l-bow, to defend Humanga.

3. 1480

No sooner do I say I see no pikes, then I see one in the north. Damn... maybe the iron idea isn't so bad... I'd try it with Keshiks, but not with HA's.

Lose a scouting HA to a mace, retaliation ... results in us suiciding the HA. Which was the intention, except that it completely failed to damage the stupid Mace. Retreat with the other horse

4. 1490

:smoke: I am an idiot. I ran the sci at 0 to get 145-ish gold, then stupidly reset the sci. I have 129 gold... cannot upgrade in Humanga. Damn. It will not hold next turn... I contemplate pulling all our units out of the city, but am not happy. I do not do this. We Aztecs do not know retreat! /:smoke: (hopefully). Drop sci again in the obscene hope of stupid AI.

Teno- Mace-Mace
New Tla- Something L-bow. Stack for Olly looks pretty nice.

5. 1500

Humanga falls, the disgrace of General Zalson. They take the city weakened, but w/o lost. Move the LB and HA over to harry the city. Hopefully once we take Olly (stack is not sufficient, but...)... I decide to regroup for a second... I will make sure I have adequate forces.

Pink Dot built something, started a mace.

Teo starts a mace after LB.

6. 1505
Backline Texacoco starts a HA, to deal with the impending landing of a settler pair on our backlines.

7. 1510

Teno builds a Mace, first in the Vanguard to go against Humanga. Starts a LB

8. 1515

Tla finishes a LB, starts another. LB starts moving up to protect Olly ;)

3 upgrades, two in Teo, 1 in Tla
Moving_to_Olly.JPG

9. 1520

Teno finishes an LB. Pop ups tell us how miserable we are...

Dead_Last!.JPG

I lose all the new upgrades attacking a combat IV! mace threatening Teo. This is just great.

Checking the Diplo screen, I notice that hey, guess what... Liz is at peace with Huyana. When'd that happen?

10. 1525

Meet Louie XIV, he's WAY ahead, too. Someone builds Versailles. I leave all unit moves up to the next person.

I'm feeling pessimistic about our chances, considering what happened with Liberalism. Unless there is a MAJOR world war, involving everyone but us (not likely, because Capac is embroiled with us, and wants a city for peace) and involving massive pillaging.

I have this nasty feeling that someone, either Liz, Saladin or Louis, is going to dogpile on us.

That will not be nice.

No peace yet. Huayna is fixated on getting a city. We have knights. We also have open borders with Julius and Louis. Defensively we're fine. Offensive is challenged. No pix, nothing changed.

Due to sudden computer failure I am off games until I get it fixed:mad:
Please skip until I check back in.

1575 – Preflight – Huayna has musketmen. Me thinks we are still hurting. And he’s founded a city south of us, how nice.

IBT- Drama=>Gunpowder (13 turns)

1580 – Lose a mace killing a musket. Gather our forces together. I thought we had more than one knight?

IBT – Hatty pops up with a present for us.

First I fall down and kiss her feet, then I thank her for her generous offer.

1585 – Five Incas are approaching. Move units into position.
IBT – Lose the LB in the forrest.
1590 – I sell our WM around for a goodly chunk of change. Up science.

IBT – The Five Incas cut a best selling record and move out of the forest next to our stack of knights and maces.

1595 – Lose a knight, but the Five Incas fall off the pop charts and cease to function as a band.

1600 – As the new century dawns, Huayna starts to gather five more men to form a band of merry men. However, they are spread out and three of them don’t make it during try outs.

1605 – Kill another Inca musket. The gunpowder promotion should be standard issue to all our knights from here on out. BTW, Hatty is proselytizing with her Taoist missionaries.

1610 – Move a large force on Huamanga… again. Take out a musket with a gunpowder resistant knight.

1615 – Lose two knights and two maces recapturing Huamanga. Attack Ica to the south and kill one defender.

1620 – Capture Ica.

1625 – March to the hill south of Olly-olly-oxenfree.

After Action – There are eight defenders in Olly. We’ll probably need to attack with a minimum of twelve units. We also need to bombard like crazy to get the defenses down. When you attack you have to have enough to take it on the first try or else the AI will get more defenders in there. We also need to start reforming a homeland defense.

Stand by for a counter attack at Huamanga. I have left the capture force intact there for defense.
