I'll be buying ASAP and doubtlessly be staying up late learning the mechanics of the game and re-reading the manual over and over. Start at lowest level and short game and move from there. I'll be looking forward to SG's after the posts come out that have people winning at various levels. Looking forward to reading about people conquering the levels.

Except for revisits once or twice a year, I quit playing Civ3 SGs two and a half years ago.

Now Civ4 is just weeks away! :D

I have a hunch it is going to be worthy. ;)

I think that experienced deity level players should start playing civ4 at about emperor level, i would propably play a single player game to learn the basic rules first and then i would join some SGs. I'll propably play civ4 gotm when it starts.

Civ4 won't be Civ3 version 1.5. It sounds like many of the core tenants of the Civ series have been changed around somewhat, hopefully for the better of course. It's going to be a fresh canvass!

Sounds like a lot of brave people on the forums - I think you guys have been beating on the Conquests AI with those super-powered armies for too long. ;) Don't let me stop you from trying the hard stuff, but assuming that we'll all be able to leap right into Emperor? Soren's had two years now to work on the Civ4 AI, and I'll bet he has some surprises for us. :mischief:

One way - or another! - the first couple weeks of SGs are going to be priceless reads. :D

Well, it would be somewhat fun to be crushed by emperor AIs if that happens ;)

That is for sure. I learnt how to play civ3 alone (i even managed to win on deity without reading any of the strategy articles), but i think that learning to play together with the community should be even more fun :D

I'll play whatever version there's an interesting game going on in, assuming I have any time to play at all. I'm not picky. I'll be buying Civ IV right away because I have no willpower.

Yeah, after a while we started playing AW with no pillaging and even managed to pull of an AWDG small Pang win that way with Babylon. But on some map types and certainly @ AWD you need all the tricks in the book.

Hope some of the "old" guys I read & learned from show back up for C4. :D

I've had my butt kiced before, and C4 will kick it again, but if the win is guaranteed it's just not as satisfying. A balanced game you can either win or lose makes for a fun game for me. It will be interesting to flesh out the new tactics.

I think I am going to try to wait until mid-December, when I finish up with finals, before getting Civ4. I remember how quickly I got sucked in with CivIII and Conquests, and I probably shouldn't repeat. I will also try to resist the urge to do any real reading about the game, so I get the initial experience on its own, unspoiled in any way but what others have said. Though I wish I had been a part of the group back when CivIII came out, or at least Conquests, and had been able to play in those first SGs. So I am rather torn on whether or not to wait. I do think though that I will give it a shot for the first time at Emperor. I was sort of doing okay on Emperor before coming to this forum and learning any real tricks on how to play. I think greater awareness of general strategies and a thorough perusal of the manual make emperor an okay starting point. Even if I lose spectacularly, giving a harder level a shot and losing probably will teach more than starting at Chieftan-Regent.

bedhead, you MUST come back for Civ4, I really miss those games with your lead.

Good plan! Get the vital life-sustaining activity to a steady situation before opening the Civ4 box, because who knows how long you be parked in front of your monitor after that.

Seriously. :)

Yeah, I know that that is the way to go. All I really know is that I am one of the few people, if not only person, who wishes this was coming out a month or so later.

ThERat, thanks for the nice comment.

Good to see Sullla, Sirian, Arathorn, LK, and Gothmog (back from the dead). I need to get a new CD drive in the next few weeks before the game comes out because mine died, but that small problem aside, I look forward to RBCiv, LK, and LotR games.

Has anyone heard from Charis lately? Will he be coming back? How about T-Hawk, Urugharakh, or Sirp?

Speaker! We're definitely going to have to hook up on some more games again. :D

I think I saw Sirp post something a while ago, but no clue if he'll be back again. Haven't heard anything from T-Hawk or Urugharakh, though I'd be shocked if T-Hawk at least didn't show up at some point (he was a big fan of Alpha Centauri before Civ3).

I hope that we can find a way to track Charis down again. I know for a fact that he'd absolutely LOVE Civ4, get into the roleplaying aspect with the religions and have a total ball. I'll have to see if Sirian or Griselda have some way to find out what he's been up to lately. :)

Charis was buried under real life issues. Three kids, stress at work... I hope he hits enough of a lull, but really, I'd worry about him a bit if he does come back. He tends to burn brightly, and then have to stop because he overdid it!

It would be really cool to have him around, though, even if it is for a short while. :)

I voted yes till end of time.

I have ordered Civ4, and will play it, but if past experience tells me anything, the game will probably not be really good til the 3rd patch or so. So to play a balanced game, Civ3 will probably remain the best bet for a while.

I was thinking of possible variants for CivIV SG’s and came up with something I was curious what others thought of. Basically the game starts out as an AW game until a specific religion is researched. Once that religion is known, and believed, the people realize their misguided ways of war and must immediately halt all aggressive acts. From then on the nation begins attempted to spread their religion too all the other civs to get them to “convert” to our religion. Basically the goal would be to gain control of the rest of the world through religious means. Obviously for those heathen nations who won’t accept our faith we would have to help them with their conversion [read crusade]. We would have to build the Holy City.

"Until the end of time". Or rather, until such time that interesting Civ3 SGs dry up.

I have Civ4 on pre-order, so it should turn up on the 21st. I plan to kick off one solo game at the Chieftan-equivalent level, just to get hold of the game mechanics. Then I'll see.

As for SGs - I think I'd rather wait for a bit, until the patch level stabilises somewhat.

It's cool to see a bunch of the "old names" here -- Speaker, Sullla, Gothmog, etc. I'm probably going to want to play 8 hours or so "to get a feel for the game" before setting up my first SG. Figure 9 or so hours after I get the game, I'll be planning my SG -- say, 3 a.m. or so.

The LotR series will be back. But I don't know what form it will be in. I'm looking forward to exploring the new game -- and doing it with others.

Yes, I expect the first version to be a bit buggy. So what? "Scouting Sid" had a number of C3C bugs, but it was still an awesome game. Any really bad exploits can be worked around, by in-game consensus or changing rulesets for the next game. As long as the core game works (I still have MoO3 nightmares), we'll be OK.

I gotta say seeing all you guys coming back after a long hiatus is a quite a thrill for a virtual noob like me. I hope to be able to tag along in some Civ4 SG's.

I have Civ 4 on pre-order, but I want to get somewhat familiar with the game before trying any SGs. I do find that playing SGs speeds up the learning process considerably, so I plan on getting into the SG action here eventually.
